Pull i2c updates from Wolfram Sang:
"i2c core removes an argument from the i2c_mux_add_adapter() call to
further deprecate class based I2C device instantiation. All users are
converted, too.
Other that that, Andi collected a number if I2C host driver patches.
Those merges have their own description"

Code cleanup:
A substantial code cleanup from Wolfram affects many drivers:
- Removed dev_err() in case of timeout during i2c transfers, as
timeouts are not considered errors and should not be treated
as such.
- For the same reason, 'timeout' variables have been renamed to
'time_left'.
Other cleanups:
- The viperboard driver now omits the "owner = THIS_MODULE"
assignment.
- Finally, we have eliminated the last remnants of
I2C_CLASS_SPD: support for class-based devices has been
completely removed from the mux-gpio driver.
- In the ocore devices, a more standard use of ioport_map() for
8-bit I/O read/write operations has been implemented.
- The mpc driver will be among the first i2c drivers and one of
the first in the kernel to use the __free auto cleanup
routine.
- The designware driver now uses MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE() instead
of MODULE_ALIAS() for better consistency with the ID table.
- Added prefixes to the octeon register macros.
- Fixed some checkpatch errors in the newly created
i2c-viai2c-common.c file.
Code refactoring:
- The riic driver has refactored read/write operations to more
flexibly support new platforms, laying the foundation for new
SoC peculiarities.
- In the i801 driver, a notifier callback has been created for
muxed child segments.
- The lpi2c driver now sets a clock rate during probe instead
of continuously calling clk_get_rate().
- Improvements in the clock divisor logic to accommodate other
clock frequencies.
- Combined some common functionalities during initialization
for the wmt driver and separated others that can be
independently used by different drivers. Now, all the common
functionalities are grouped in the i2c-viai2c-common.c file.
- Improved the clock stretching mechanism in the newly created
i2c-viai2c-common.c file, inherited from the previous
i2c-wmt.c.
Features added:
- The octeon driver now includes watchdog timeout handling.
- Added high-speed support for the octeon driver.
Added support for:
- R9A09G057 SoC in the riic driver.
- Rapids-D I2C controller in the designware driver.
- Cadence driver now also supports RISC-V architectures.
- Added support to the WMT device as a separate driver using the
newly created i2c-viai2c-common.c functionalities.
- Added support for the Zhaoxin I2C controller.
Some improvements in the bindings:
- The pnx driver is converted to dtschema.
- Added documentation for the Qualcomm SC8280XP.

If an error occurs after the clk_prepare_enable() call, it should be undone
by a corresponding clk_disable_unprepare() call, as already done in the
remove() function.
As devm_clk_get() is used, we can switch to devm_clk_get_enabled() to
handle it automatically and fix the probe.
Update the remove() function accordingly and remove the now useless
clk_disable_unprepare() call.

As Krzysztof Kozlowski pointed out the better is to use
MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE() as it will be consistent with the content
of the real ID table of the platform devices.
While at it, drop unneeded and unused module alias in PCI glue
driver as PCI already has its own ID table and automatic loading
should just work.

Add Zhaoxin I2C controller driver. It provides the access to the i2c
busses, which connects to the touchpad, eeprom, I2S, etc.
Zhaoxin I2C controller has two separate busses, so may accommodate up
to two I2C adapters. Those adapters are listed in the ACPI namespace
with the IIC1D17 HID, and probed by a platform driver.
The driver works with IRQ mode, and supports basic I2C features. Flags
I2C_AQ_NO_ZERO_LEN and I2C_AQ_COMB_WRITE_THEN_READ are used to limit
the unsupported access.

During each byte access, the host performs clock stretching.
To reduce the host performs clock stretching, move most of

1. The I2C IP for both wmt and zhaoxin originates from VIA. Rename
common registers, functions, and variable names to follow the
VIAI2C_ and viai2c_ naming conventions for consistency and clarity.
2. rename i2c_dev to i2c, to shorten the length of a line.
3. rename wait_result to time_left, make it better to reflect the meaning
of the value returned by wait_for_completion_timeout().
4. remove TCR_MASTER_WRITE, its value is 0.

Since the I2C IP of both wmt and zhaoxin originates from VIA,
it is better to separate the common code first.
The common driver is named as i2c-viai2c-common.c.
Old i2c-wmt.c renamed to i2c-viai2c-wmt.c.
The MAINTAINERS file will be updated accordingly in upcoming commits.

Read the ioclk property as reference clock if sclk not present in acpi
table to make it SOC agnostic.
In case, it's not populated from dts/acpi table, use the default clock
of 800 MHz which is optimal in either case of sclk/ioclk.

Add watchdog timeout handling to cater to the unhandled warnings
seen during validation on boards with different I2C slaves.
This status code reflects the state that controller couldn't
receive any response from slave while being in non-idle state
and HW recommends to reset before any further bus access.

To support bus operations for high speed bus frequencies greater than
400KHZ following control bits need to be setup accordingly
- hs_mode (bit 0) field in Mode register to switch controller
between low-speed and high-speed frequency operating mode.
- Setup clock divisors for desired TWSI bus frequency using
FOSCL output frequency divisor (D):
0 - sets the divisor to 10 for low speed mode
1 - sets the divisor to 15 for high speed mode.
The TWSI bus output frequency, in master mode is based on:
TCLK = 100MHz / (THP + 2)
FOSCL = FSAMP / (M+1)×D = TCLK / (2 ^ N × (M + 1) × 15)
FSAMP = TCLK / 2 ^ N
where,
N is <2:0> and M is <6:3> of TWSI Clock Control Register
D is 10 for low speed or 15 for HS_MODE
With high speed mode support, HLC mode usage is limited to
low speed frequency (<=400KHz) bus transfers in hardware.

Instead of repeatedly calling clk_get_rate for each transfer, lock
the clock rate and cache the value.
A deadlock has been observed while adding tlv320aic32x4 audio codec to
the system. When this clock provider adds its clock, the clk mutex is
locked already, it needs to access i2c, which in return needs the mutex
for clk_get_rate as well.

Only remaining client driver supporting I2C_CLASS_SPD is jc42. This
type of thermal sensor can be found on several DDR3/DDR4 modules.
i2c_register_spd() instantiates also such thermal sensor i2c devices.
Since 893fef0bc6aa ("i2c: i801: Call i2c_register_spd for muxed child
segments") i2c_register_spd() is called also for the remaining use case,
systems with muxed SMBUS segments for SPD EEPROMs.
Therefore I2C_CLASS_SPD class-based instantiation isn't needed any longer
in this driver, so remove it.

The original change adds usage of i2c_root_adapter(), which is
implemented in i2c-mux.c. Therefore we can't use the multiplexing
if I2C_I801=y and I2C_MUX=m.
Handling the dependencies in the code would become unnecessarily
complex, therefore create a new config symbol.

There is at least one machine that uses this driver but does not
have support for inb()/outb() instructions.
Convert this to using ioport_map() so it can build on architectures
that don't provide these but work correctly on machines that require
using port I/O.

The Driver unintentionally programs ctrl reg to clear the fifo, which
happens after the start of transaction. Previously, this was not an issue
as it involved read-modified-write. However, this issue breaks i2c reads
on QEMU, as i2c-read is executed before guest starts programming control
register.

Once the gpio mux driver binds to the "i2c-mux-gpio" platform device,
this creates the i2c adapters for the muxed child segments.
We can use the bus notifier mechanism to check for creation of the
child i2c adapters, and call i2c_register_spd() for them. This allows
to detect all DIMM's on systems with more than 8 memory slots.

With an increasing number of SoCs reusing this driver, each with slight
variations in the RIIC IP, it becomes necessary to support passing these
details as OF data. This approach simplifies the extension of the driver
for other SoCs.
This patch lays the groundwork for adding support for the Renesas RZ/V2H
SoC.

Introduce helper functions for performing I2C read and write operations
in the RIIC driver.
These helper functions lay the groundwork for adding support for the
RZ/V2H SoC. This is essential because the register offsets for the RZ/V2H
SoC differ from those of the RZ/A SoC. By abstracting the read and write
operations, we can seamlessly adapt the driver to support different SoC
variants without extensive modifications.
This patch is part of the preparation process for integrating support for
the RZ/V2H SoC into the RIIC driver.

Commit 857cc04cdf50 ("i2c: i801: Add helper i801_get_block_len")
introduced a slight functional change: the status variable is now
overwritten with the length of an SMBUS tranasaction,
even in case of success.
This breaks the touchpad on at least my Lenovo P1:

Add compatible for the integration of the same DB8500 IP block into the
Mobileye EyeQ5 platform. Two quirks are present:
- The memory bus only supports 32-bit accesses. Avoid writeb() and
readb() by introducing helper functions that fallback to writel()
and readl().
- A register must be configured for the I2C speed mode; it is located
in a shared register region called OLB. We access that memory region
using a syscon & regmap that gets passed as a phandle (mobileye,olb).
A two-bit enum per controller is written into the register; that
requires us to know the global index of the I2C controller (cell arg
to the mobileye,olb phandle).
We add #include <linux/mfd/syscon.h> and <linux/regmap.h>.

Allow overriding the default timeout value (200ms) from devicetree,
using the generic i2c-transfer-timeout-us property.
The i2c_adapter->timeout field is an unaccurate jiffies amount;
i2c-nomadik uses hrtimers for timeouts below one jiffy.

The FIFO flush function uses a jiffies amount to detect timeouts as the
flushing is async. Replace with ktime to get more accurate precision
and support short timeouts.

Replace the completion by a waitqueue for synchronization from IRQ
handler to task. For short timeouts, use hrtimers, else use timers.
Usecase: avoid blocking the I2C bus for too long when an issue occurs.
The threshold picked is one jiffy: if timeout is below that, use
hrtimers. This threshold is NOT configurable.
Implement behavior but do NOT change fetching of timeout. This means the
timeout is unchanged (200ms) and the hrtimer case will never trigger.
A waitqueue is used because it supports both desired timeout approaches.
See wait_event_timeout() and wait_event_hrtimeout(). An atomic boolean
serves as synchronization condition.

Constant register bit fields are declared using hardcoded hex values;
replace them by calls to BIT() and GENMASK(). Replace custom GEN_MASK()
macro by the generic FIELD_PREP(). Replace manual bit manipulations by
the generic FIELD_GET() macro.

IRQ_MASK and I2C_CLEAR_ALL_INTS both mask available interrupts. IRQ_MASK
removes top options (bits 29-31). I2C_CLEAR_ALL_INTS removes reserved
options including top bits. Keep the latter.

Disambiguate the usage of dev as a variable name; it is usually best to
keep it reserved for struct device pointers. Avoid having multiple
names for the same struct pointer (previously: dev, nmk, nmk_i2c).
Fix whitespace code style; return indented twice, spacing besides infix
operators, align function call arguments to opening parenthesis. Remove
useless cast to unused return value from init_hw(). Introduce local dev
variable in probe() to alias &adev->dev.

When the i2c error condition occurred and master state was not
idle, the master irq function will goto complete state without any
other interrupt handling. It would cause dummy irq expected print.
Under this condition, assign the irq_status into irq_handle.
For example, when the abnormal start / stop occurred (bit 5) with
normal stop status (bit 4) at same time. Then the normal stop status
would not be handled and it would cause irq expected print in
the aspeed_i2c_bus_irq.

wmt_i2c_reset_hardware() calls clk_prepare_enable(). So, should an error
occur after it, it should be undone by a corresponding
clk_disable_unprepare() call, as already done in the remove function.

If registering the platform device fails, the lookup table is
removed in the error path. On module removal we would try to
remove the lookup table again. Fix this by setting priv->lookup
only if registering the platform device was successful.
In addition free the memory allocated for the lookup table in
the error path.

i801_probe_optional_slaves() is called before i801_add_mux().
This results in mux_pdev being checked before it's set by
i801_add_mux(). Fix this by changing the order of the calls.
I consider this safe as I see no dependencies.

The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes
many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by
returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart
from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks.
To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return
void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to
.remove_new(), which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers
are converted, .remove_new() will be renamed to .remove().
Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove
callback to the void returning variant.

Currently, all Kconfig symbols for R-Car Gen4 SoCs select
ARCH_RCAR_GEN3, which might confuse the casual reader. Prepare for the
advent of ARCH_RCAR_GEN4 by extending the dependency for auto-selecting

This adds i2c bus recovery to the lpi2c driver.
Uses the generic recovery function setting the SCL/SDA pads as
GPIO pins and sending 9 clocks to try and recover the bus.

I got an idea the i2c-designware should not need duplicated state
machines for the interrupt and polling modes. The IP is practically the
same and state transitions happens in response to the events that can be
observed from the DW_IC_RAW_INTR_STAT register. Either by interrupts or
by polling.
Another reasons are the interrupt mode is the most tested, has handling
for special cases as well as transmit abort handling and those are
missing from two polling mode quirks.
Patch implements a generic polling mode by using existing code for
interrupt mode. This is done by moving event handling from the
i2c_dw_isr() into a new i2c_dw_process_transfer() that will be called
both from the i2c_dw_isr() and a polling loop.
Polling loop is implemented in a new i2c_dw_wait_transfer() that is
shared between both modes. In interrupt mode it waits for the completion
object as before. In polling mode both completion object and
DW_IC_RAW_INTR_STAT are polled to determine completed transfer and state
transitions.
Loop tries to save power by sleeping "stetson guessed" range between
3 and 25 µS which falls between 10 cycles of High-speed mode 3.4 Mb/s
and Fast mode 400 kHz. With it the CPU usage was reduced under heavy
Fast mode I2C transfer without much increase in total transfer time but
otherwise no more effort has been put to optimize this.
I decided to convert the txgbe_i2c_dw_xfer_quirk() straight to generic
polling mode code in this patch. It doesn't have HW dependent quirks
like the amd_i2c_dw_xfer_quirk() does have and without users this patch
is needless.

I believe RX FIFO depth define 0 is incorrect on Wangxun 10Gb NIC. It
must be at least 1 since code is able to read received data from the
DW_IC_DATA_CMD register.
For now this define is irrelevant since the txgbe_i2c_dw_xfer_quirk()
doesn't use the rx_fifo_depth member variable of struct dw_i2c_dev but
is needed when converting code into generic polling mode implementation.

Code is more logically arranged when i2c_dw_read_clear_intrbits() and
i2c_dw_isr() are located before i2c_dw_xfer().
Real reason for this is to prepare for more shared code between
interrupt and polling mode code.
While at it, remove one extra space and refer to the
i2c_dw_init_master() in two comment sections.

here. Motivation to this is to prepare for generic polling mode code

I was testing the polling mode txgbe_i2c_dw_xfer_quirk() on a HW where
the i2c-designware has interrupt connected and shared with other device.
I noticed there is a bogus interrupt for each transfer.
Reason for this that both polling mode functions call the
i2c_dw_xfer_init() which enable interrupts then followed by immediate
disable by the same polling mode functions. This is enough to trigger
TX_EMPTY interrupt.
Fix this by introducing a __i2c_dw_write_intr_mask() helper that unmasks
interrupts conditionally and use it in i2c_dw_xfer_init().

Currently initialization flow in i2c_dw_probe_master() skips a few steps
and has code duplication for polling mode implementation.
Simplify this by adding a new ACCESS_POLLING flag that is set for those
two platforms that currently use polling mode and use it to skip
interrupt handler setup.

When being a target, NAK from the controller means that all bytes have
been transferred. So, the last byte needs also to be marked as
'processed'. Otherwise index registers of backends may not increase.

In the npcm_i2c_reg_slave() function, there was a redundant
comparison that checked if 'bus->slave' was null immediately after
assigning it the 'client' value. There were concerns about a
potential null dereference because of `client->adapter`, but
according to Wolfram Sang, "we trusted ourselves here" Therefore,
this comparison is unnecessary.
Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE.

According to the Intel datasheets, software must reset the block
buffer index twice for block process call transactions: once before
writing the outgoing data to the buffer, and once again before
reading the incoming data from the buffer.
The driver is currently missing the second reset, causing the wrong
portion of the block buffer to be read.

On powerpc, it is possible to compile test both the new apple (arm) and
old pasemi (powerpc) drivers for the i2c hardware at the same time,
which leads to a warning about linking the same object file twice:
scripts/Makefile.build:244: drivers/i2c/busses/Makefile: i2c-pasemi-core.o is added to multiple modules: i2c-apple i2c-pasemi
Rework the driver to have an explicit helper module, letting Kbuild
take care of whether this should be built-in or a loadable driver.

For i2c read operation in GSI mode, we are getting timeout
due to malformed TRE basically incorrect TRE sequence
in gpi(drivers/dma/qcom/gpi.c) driver.
I2C driver has geni_i2c_gpi(I2C_WRITE) function which generates GO TRE and
geni_i2c_gpi(I2C_READ)generates DMA TRE. Hence to generate GO TRE before
DMA TRE, we should move geni_i2c_gpi(I2C_WRITE) before
geni_i2c_gpi(I2C_READ) inside the I2C GSI mode transfer function
i.e. geni_i2c_gpi_xfer().
TRE stands for Transfer Ring Element - which is basically an element with
size of 4 words. It contains all information like slave address,
clk divider, dma address value data size etc).
Mainly we have 3 TREs(Config, GO and DMA tre).
- CONFIG TRE : consists of internal register configuration which is
required before start of the transfer.
- DMA TRE : contains DDR/Memory address, called as DMA descriptor.
- GO TRE : contains Transfer directions, slave ID, Delay flags, Length
of the transfer.
I2c driver calls GPI driver API to config each TRE depending on the
protocol.
For read operation tre sequence will be as below which is not aligned
to hardware programming guide.
- CONFIG tre
- DMA tre
- GO tre
As per Qualcomm's internal Hardware Programming Guide, we should configure
TREs in below sequence for any RX only transfer.

The driver receives the tx fifo almost empty(aempty) interrupt and
reads the tx_aempty_int_mstat to start a round of data transfer.
The operation of clearing the TX aempty interrupt after completing
a write cycle is added to ensure that the FIFO is truly at almost
empty status when an aempty interrupt is received.
The threshold for fifo almost empty interrupt is defined as 1.

The driver finishes a write cycle by read the fifo tx full status
or write limit decrease to 0. The driver starts to write data to
the FIFO after the I2C FIFO almost empty interrupt is reported.
The threshold for FIFO almost empty interrupt is that the amount
of data in the FIFO is less than or equal to 1.
Reduce write maxwrite to the fifo depth - aempty interrupt
threshold. Limiting the number of data to be written at a time
to remaining fifo capacity.

Switch the R-Mobile A1, R-Mobile APE6, and SH-Mobile AG5 SoCs to the new
frequency calculation formula, to (a) avoid running the I2C bus too fast,
and (b) bring the low/high ratio closer to the recommended ratio 5/4.
As this makes fast_clock_dt_config and v2_freq_calc_dt_config identical,
merge them into a single fast_clock_dt_config.
Legacy SH users (sh7343, sh7366, and sh772[234]) are left alone, and
still use the old formula.
Measurement results on R-Mobile APE6 and SH-Mobile AG5 (fck=104 MHz,
clks_per_count=2):
100 kHz: 106 kHz LH=1.12 before, 99.6 kHz L/H=1.22 after
400 kHz: 384 kHz LH=1.67 before, 392 kHz L/H=1.27 after
Measurement results on R-Mobile A1 (fck=49.5 MHz, clks_per_count=1):
100 kHz: 106 kHz L/H=1.09 before, 99.6 kHz L/H=1.20 after

Starting with
commit 75820314de26 ("i2c: core: add generic I2C GPIO recovery")
GPIO bus recovery is supported by the I2C core, so we can remove the
driver implementation and use that one instead.
As a nice side-effect, pinctrl becomes optional, allowing bus recovery on
LS1021A, which does not have such luxury, but can be wired up to use extra
fixed GPIO pins.
Note: The previous error messages about bus recovery not being supported is
dropped with this change. Given that it is perfectly possible to have platforms
where bus recovery works without pinctrl support, I happen to work on one such,
both error messages does not really make sense in those cases. And I don't see
how to know if this is the case or not.

The stm32mp25 has only a single interrupt line used for both
events and errors. In order to cope with that, reorganise the
error handling code so that it can be called either from the
common handler (used in case of SoC having only a single IT line)
and the error handler for others.
The CR1 register also embeds a new FMP bit, necessary when running
at Fast Mode Plus frequency. This bit should be used instead of
the SYSCFG bit used on other platforms.
Add a new compatible to distinguish between the SoCs and two
boolean within the setup structure in order to know if the
platform has a single/multiple IT lines and if the FMP bit
within CR1 is available or not.

The irq handling is currently split between the irq handler
and the threaded irq handler. Some of the handling (such as
dma related stuffs) done within the irq handler might sleep or
take some time leading to issues if the kernel is built with
realtime constraints. In order to fix that, perform an overall
rework to perform most of the job within the threaded handler
and only keep fifo access in the non threaded handler.

On the Dell XPS 15 7590/0VYV0G, BIOS 1.24.0 09/11/2023, Linux prints the
warning below.
i801_smbus 0000:00:1f.4: Accelerometer lis3lv02d is present on SMBus but its address is unknown, skipping registration
Following the same suggestions by Wolfram Sang as for the Dell Precision
3540 [1], the accelerometer can be successfully found on I2C bus 2 at
address 0x29.
$ echo lis3lv02d 0x29 | sudo tee /sys/bus/i2c/devices/i2c-2/new_device

On the Dell Precision 3540/0M14W7, BIOS 1.7.4 05/12/2020, Linux prints
the warning below.

sparse reports an error on some data that gets converted from be32.
That's because that data is typed u32 instead of __be32.
The type is correct, the be32_to_cpu() conversion is not.
Remove the conversion.

Both i2c_generic_scl_recovery() and the debug output indicate that SDA is
purely optional for bus recovery. But devm_gpiod_get() never returns NULL
making it mandatory. Fix this by calling devm_gpiod_get_optional instead.

Rockchip RV1126 is using old style i2c controller, the i2c2
bus uses a non-sequential offset in the grf register for the
mask/value bits for this bus.

To properly handle ACK on the bus when transferring more than one
message in polling mode, move the polling handling loop from
s3c24xx_i2c_message_start() to s3c24xx_i2c_doxfer(). This way
i2c_s3c_irq_nextbyte() is always executed till the end, properly
acknowledging the IRQ bits and no recursive calls to
i2c_s3c_irq_nextbyte() are made.
While touching this, also fix finishing transfers in polling mode by
using common code path and always waiting for the bus to become idle
and disabled.

To properly handle read transfers in polling mode, no waiting for the ACK
state is needed as it will never come. Just wait a bit to ensure start
state is on the bus and continue processing next bytes.

To support FM+, we mainly need to turn the SMD constant into a parameter
and set it accordingly. That also means we can finally fix SMD to our
needs instead of bailing out. A sanity check for SMD then becomes a
sanity check for 'x == 0'. After all that, activating the enable bit for
FM+ is all we need to do. Tested with a Renesas Falcon board using R-Car
V3U.

I2C_CLASS_HWMON
After removal of the legacy eeprom driver the only remaining I2C
client device driver supporting I2C_CLASS_SPD is jc42. Because this
driver also supports I2C_CLASS_HWMON, adapters don't have to
declare support for I2C_CLASS_SPD if they support I2C_CLASS_HWMON.
It's one step towards getting rid of I2C_CLASS_SPD mid-term.

Some masters may drive the transfers with low enough latency between
the nak/stop phase of the current command and the start/address phase
of the following command that the interrupts are coalesced by the
time we process them.
Handle the stop conditions before processing SLAVE_MATCH to fix the
complaints that sometimes occur below.

When an I2C device contains a wake IRQ subordinate to a regmap-irq chip,
the regmap-irq code must be able to perform I2C transactions during
suspend_device_irqs() and resume_device_irqs(). Therefore, the bus must
be suspended/resumed during the NOIRQ phase.

When running on a many core ARM64 server, errors were
happening in the ISR that looked like corrupted memory. These
corruptions would fix themselves if small delays were inserted
in the ISR. Errors reported by the driver included "i2c_designware
APMC0D0F:00: i2c_dw_xfer_msg: invalid target address" and
"i2c_designware APMC0D0F:00:controller timed out" during
in-band IPMI SSIF stress tests.
The problem was determined to be memory writes in the driver were not
becoming visible to all cores when execution rapidly shifted between
cores, like when a register write immediately triggers an ISR.
Processors with weak memory ordering, like ARM64, make no
guarantees about the order normal memory writes become globally
visible, unless barrier instructions are used to control ordering.
To solve this, regmap accessor functions configured by this driver
were changed to use non-relaxed forms of the low-level register
access functions, which include a barrier on platforms that require
it. This assures memory writes before a controller register access are
visible to all cores. The community concluded defaulting to correct
operation outweighed defaulting to the small performance gains from
using relaxed access functions. Being a low speed device added weight to
this choice of default register access behavior.

This reverts commit 0b01392c18b9993a584f36ace1d61118772ad0ca.
Conversion of PXA to generic I2C recovery, makes the I2C bus completely
lock up if recovery pinctrl is present in the DT and I2C recovery is
enabled.
So, until the generic I2C recovery can also work with PXA lets revert
to have working I2C and I2C recovery again.

While the preamble field _is_ technically big-endian, its value is always 0x2A2A,
which is the same in either endianness. However, to avoid generating a warning,

During SMBus block data read process, we have seen high interrupt rate
because of TX_EMPTY irq status while waiting for block length byte (the
first data byte after the address phase). The interrupt handler does not
do anything because the internal state is kept as STATUS_WRITE_IN_PROGRESS.
Hence, we should disable TX_EMPTY IRQ until I2C DesignWare receives
first data byte from I2C device, then re-enable it to resume SMBus
transaction.
It takes 0.789 ms for host to receive data length from slave.
Without the patch, i2c_dw_isr() is called 99 times by TX_EMPTY interrupt.
And it is none after applying the patch.

Add the code to handle an invalid state when both bits S_RX_EVENT
(indicating a transaction) and S_START_BUSY (indicating the end
of transaction - transition of START_BUSY from 1 to 0) are set in
the interrupt status register during a slave read.

Previously the duty cycle was divided equally into h_scl_l, t_scl_h.
This makes the low period of the SCL clock in Fast Mode is only 1.25us
which is way lower than the minimal value (1.3) specified in i2c
specification. In order to make sure t_scl_l, t_scl_h always fullfill
i2c specification, this commit calculates t_scl_l using this formula:
t_scl_l = clk_cycle *
((t_low_min + (scl_clock - t_low_min - t_high_min) / 2) / scl_clock)
where:
t_low_min is the minimal value of low period of the SCL clock in us;
t_high_min is the minimal value of high period of the SCL clock in us;
scl_clock is converted from SCL clock frequency into us.

Now that the legacy eeprom driver was removed, the only remaining i2c
client driver with class SPD autodetection is jc42, and this driver
supports also class HWMON. Therefore we can remove class SPD from the
supported classes of the i801 adapter driver.
Legacy class-based instantiation shouldn't be used in new code, so I
think we can remove also the generic logic that ensures that supported
classes of parent and muxed adapters don't overlap.
Note: i801 parent supports just class HWMON now, and muxed childs
class SPD, so the supported classes don't overlap.

In case of SMBUS byte read with PEC enabled, the whole transfer
is split into two commands. A first write command, followed by
a read command. The write command does not have any PEC byte
and a PEC byte is appended at the end of the read command.
(cf Read byte protocol with PEC in SMBUS specification)
Within the STM32 I2C controller, handling (either sending
or receiving) of the PEC byte is done via the PECBYTE bit in
register CR2.
Currently, the PECBYTE is set at the beginning of a transfer,
which lead to sending a PEC byte at the end of the write command
(hence losing the real last byte), and also does not check the
PEC byte received during the read command.
This patch corrects the function stm32f7_i2c_smbus_xfer_msg
in order to only set the PECBYTE during the read command.

When the `CONFIG_I2C_SLAVE` option is enabled and the device operates
as a slave, a situation arises where the master sends a START signal
without the accompanying STOP signal. This action results in a
persistent I2C bus timeout. The core issue stems from the fact that
the i2c controller remains in a slave read state without a timeout
mechanism. As a consequence, the bus perpetually experiences timeouts.
In this case, the i2c bus will be reset, but the slave_state reset is
missing.

Sometimes, our completions race with new master transfers and override
the bus->operation and bus->master_or_slave variables. This causes
transactions to timeout and kernel crashes less frequently.
To remedy this, we re-order all completions to the very end of the
function.

Add an atomic_xfer method to the driver so that it behaves correctly
when controlling a PMIC that is responsible for device shutdown.
The atomic_xfer method added is similar to the one from the i2c-mv64xxx
driver. When running an atomic_xfer a bool flag in the driver data is
set, the interrupt is not unmasked on transfer start, and the IRQ
handler is manually invoked while waiting for pending transfers to
complete.

`strncpy` is deprecated for use on NUL-terminated destination strings [1].
We should prefer more robust and less ambiguous string interfaces.
`info.type` is expected to be NUL-terminated judging by its use in
`i2c_new_client_device()` wherein it is used to populate `client->name`:
| strscpy(client->name, info->type, sizeof(client->name));
NUL-padding is not required and even if it was, `client` is already
zero-initialized.
Considering the two points from above, a suitable replacement is
`strscpy` [2] due to the fact that it guarantees NUL-termination on the
destination buffer without unnecessarily NUL-padding.

`strncpy` is deprecated for use on NUL-terminated destination strings [1].
We should prefer more robust and less ambiguous string interfaces.
We expect name to be NUL-terminated based on its numerous uses with
functions that expect NUL-terminated strings.
For example in i2c-core-base.c +1533:
| dev_dbg(&adap->dev, "adapter [%s] registered\n", adap->name);
NUL-padding is not required as `adap` is already zero-alloacted with:
| adap = devm_kzalloc(&usbif->dev, sizeof(struct i2c_adapter), GFP_KERNEL);

and 0 on success - this error message therefore is triggered on

Initially, we only needed a reset controller to make sure RXDMA works at
least once per transfer. Meanwhile, documentation has been updated. It
now says that a reset has to be performed prior every transaction, even
if it is non-DMA. So, make the reset controller a requirement instead of
being optional. And bail out if resetting fails.

I2C core ensures in i2c_smbus_xfer() that the I2C bus lock is held when
calling the smbus_xfer callback. That's i801_access() in our case.
I think it's safe in general to assume that the I2C bus lock is held
when the smbus_xfer callback is called.
Therefore I see no need to define an own mutex.

When entering the suspend callback, at first we should ensure that
transfers are finished and I2C core can't start further transfers.
Use i2c_mark_adapter_suspended() for this purpose, and complement it
with a call to i2c_mark_adapter_resumed() in the resume path.

Using the I2C host controller on the MT7981 SoC requires 4 clocks to
be enabled. One of them, the pmic clk, is only enabled in case
'mediatek,have-pmic' is also set which has other consequences which
are not desired in this case.
Allow defining a pmic clk even in case the 'mediatek,have-pmic' propterty
is not present and the bus is not used to connect to a pmic, but may
still require to enable the pmic clock.

In few places relevant registers are reset to their initial value on
driver load. Factor this out to new helper i801_restore_regs to avoid
code duplication.
Even though no actual problems are known, this patch may contribute
to avoiding potential issues by:
- restoring register values also in the error path of i2c_add_adapter
- making restoring registers the last step (especially in i801_remove)

The DesignWare IP can be synthesized with the IC_EMPTYFIFO_HOLD_MASTER_EN
parameter.
In this case, when the TX FIFO gets empty and the last command didn't have
the STOP bit (IC_DATA_CMD[9]), the controller will hold SCL low until
a new command is pushed into the TX FIFO or the transfer is aborted.
When the controller is holding SCL low, it cannot be disabled.
The transfer must first be aborted.
Also, the bus recovery won't work because SCL is held low by the master.
Check if the master is holding SCL low in __i2c_dw_disable() before trying
to disable the controller. If SCL is held low, an abort is initiated.
When the abort is done, then proceed with disabling the controller.
This whole situation can happen for instance during SMBus read data block
if the slave just responds with "byte count == 0".
This puts the driver in an unrecoverable state, because the controller is
holding SCL low and the current __i2c_dw_disable() procedure is not
working. In this situation only a SoC reset can fix the i2c bus.

Currently we set SMBHSTCNT_LAST_BYTE only after the host has started
receiving the last byte. If we get e.g. preempted before setting
SMBHSTCNT_LAST_BYTE, the host may be finished with receiving the byte
before SMBHSTCNT_LAST_BYTE is set.
Therefore change the code to set SMBHSTCNT_LAST_BYTE before writing
SMBHSTSTS_BYTE_DONE for the byte before the last byte. Now the code
is also consistent with what we do in i801_isr_byte_done().

Reset the i2c controller when an i2c transfer timeout occurs.
The remaining interrupts and device should be reset to avoid
unpredictable controller behavior.

The "i2c_mlxcpld" platform device is only instantiated on X86 systems
(through drivers/platform/x86/mlx-platform.c), or on ARM64 systems with
ACPI (through drivers/platform/mellanox/nvsw-sn2201.c). Hence further
restrict the dependency on ARM64 to ACPI, to prevent asking the user
about this driver when configuring an ARM64 kernel without ACPI support.
While at it, document in the Kconfig help text that the driver supports
ARM64/ACPI based systems, too.

Also, return the correct error instead of hardcoding -ENODEV
This change has also the advantage of handling the -EPROBE_DEFER situation.

If pinctrl is not available (thus devm_pinctrl_get() returns NULL) then
recovery can't work, because we can't switch the I2C pins between the
I2C controller and GPIO. So, it is quite correct to print
"can't get pinctrl, bus recovery not supported" because the I2C bus
can't be recovered without pinctrl.
The PTR_ERR() is also fine - because if pinctrl is not present and
returns NULL, we'll end up returning zero, which is exactly what we
want.
However, open code that with a more accurate message will be more explicit
for NULL case when CONFIG_PINCTRL is not defined.

Currently if the SoC needs pinctrl to switch the SCL and SDA from the I2C
function to GPIO function, the recovery won't work.
scl-gpio = <>;
sda-gpio = <>;
Are not enough for some SoCs to have a working recovery.
Some need:
scl-gpio = <>;
sda-gpio = <>;
pinctrl-names = "default", "recovery";
pinctrl-0 = <&i2c_pins_hw>;
pinctrl-1 = <&i2c_pins_gpio>;
The driver was not filling rinfo->pinctrl with the device node
pinctrl data which is needed by generic recovery code.
