I got multiple syzbot reports showing old bugs exposed
by BPF after commit 20f2505fb436 ("bpf: Try to avoid kzalloc
in cgroup/{s,g}etsockopt")
setsockopt() @optlen argument should be taken into account
before copying data.

We are not allowed to return an error at this point.
Looking at the code it looks like ret is always 0 at this
point, but its not.
t = find_table_lock(net, repl->name, &ret, &ebt_mutex);
... this can return a valid table, with ret != 0.
This bug causes update of table->private with the new
blob, but then frees the blob right away in the caller.

For some reason ebtables rejects blobs that provide entry points that are
not supported by the table, but what it should instead reject is the
opposite: blobs that DO NOT provide an entry point supported by the table.
t->valid_hooks is the bitmask of hooks (input, forward ...) that will see
packets. Providing an entry point that is not support is harmless
(never called/used), but the inverse isn't: it results in a crash
because the ebtables traverser doesn't expect a NULL blob for a location
its receiving packets for.
Instead of fixing all the individual checks, do what iptables is doing and
reject all blobs that differ from the expected hooks.

1) Use array_size() in ebtables, from Gustavo A. R. Silva.
2) Attach IPS_ASSURED to internal UDP stream state, reported by

3) Add NFT_META_IFTYPE to match on the interface type either

If any of these modules is loaded, hooks get registered in all netns:
Before: 'unshare -n nft list hooks' shows:
family bridge hook prerouting {
-2147483648 ebt_broute
-0000000300 ebt_nat_hook
}
family bridge hook input {

family bridge hook postrouting {

}
This adds 'template 'tables' for ebtables.
Each ebtable_foo registers the table as a template, with an init function
that gets called once the first get/setsockopt call is made.
ebtables core then searches the (per netns) list of tables.
If no table is found, it searches the list of templates instead.
If a template entry exists, the init function is called which will
enable the table and register the hooks (so packets are diverted
to the table).
If no entry is found in the template list, request_module is called.
After this, hook registration is delayed until the 'ebtables'
(set/getsockopt) request is made for a given table and will only
happen in the specific namespace.

ebtables stores the table internal data (what gets passed to the
ebt_do_table() interpreter) in struct net.
nftables keeps the internal interpreter format in pernet lists
and passes it via the netfilter core infrastructure (priv pointer).
Do the same for ebtables: the nf_hook_ops are duplicated via kmemdup,
then the ops->priv pointer is set to the table that is being registered.
After that, the netfilter core passes this table info to the hookfn.
This allows to remove the pointers from struct net.
Same pattern can be applied to ip/ip6/arptables.

Just like ip/ip6/arptables, the hooks have to be removed, then
synchronize_rcu() has to be called to make sure no more packets are being
processed before the ruleset data is released.
Place the hook unregistration in the pre_exit hook, then call the new
ebtables pre_exit function from there.
Years ago, when first netns support got added for netfilter+ebtables,
this used an older (now removed) netfilter hook unregister API, that did
a unconditional synchronize_rcu().
Now that all is done with call_rcu, ebtable_{filter,nat,broute} pernet exit
handlers may free the ebtable ruleset while packets are still in flight.
This can only happens on module removal, not during netns exit.
The new function expects the table name, not the table struct.
This is because upcoming patch set (targeting -next) will remove all
net->xt.{nat,filter,broute}_table instances, this makes it necessary
to avoid external references to those member variables.
The existing APIs will be converted, so follow the upcoming scheme of
passing name + hook type instead.

caused by a copy-to-user with a too-large "*len" value.
This adds a argument check on *len just like in the non-compat version
of the handler.
Before the "Fixes" commit, the reproducer fails with -EINVAL as
expected:
1. core calls the "compat" getsockopt version
2. compat getsockopt version detects the *len value is possibly
in 64-bit layout (*len != compat_len)
3. compat getsockopt version delegates everything to native getsockopt
version
4. native getsockopt rejects invalid *len
-> compat handler only sees len == sizeof(compat_struct) for GET_ENTRIES.
After the refactor, event sequence is:
1. getsockopt calls "compat" version (len != native_len)
2. compat version attempts to copy *len bytes, where *len is random
value from userspace

NETFILTER_CFG record generation was inconsistent for x_tables and
ebtables configuration changes. The call was needlessly messy and there
were supporting records missing at times while they were produced when
not requested. Simplify the logging call into a new audit_log_nfcfg
call. Honour the audit_enabled setting while more consistently
recording information including supporting records by tidying up dummy
checks.
Add an op= field that indicates the operation being performed (register
or replace).
Here is the enhanced sample record:
type=NETFILTER_CFG msg=audit(1580905834.919:82970): table=filter family=2 entries=83 op=replace
Generate audit NETFILTER_CFG records on ebtables table registration.

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning
in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which
will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.
Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by
this change:
"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]

Because padding isn't considered during computation of ->buf_user_offset,
"total" is decremented by fewer bytes than it should.
Therefore, the first part of
if (*total < sizeof(*entry) || entry->next_offset < sizeof(*entry))
will pass, -- it should not have. This causes oob access:
entry->next_offset is past the vmalloced size.
Reject padding and check that computed user offset (sum of ebt_entry
structure plus all individual matches/watchers/targets) is same
value that userspace gave us as the offset of the next entry.

In compat_do_replace(), a temporary buffer is allocated through vmalloc()
to hold entries copied from the user space. The buffer address is firstly
saved to 'newinfo->entries', and later on assigned to 'entries_tmp'. Then
the entries in this temporary buffer is copied to the internal kernel
structure through compat_copy_entries(). If this copy process fails,
compat_do_replace() should be terminated. However, the allocated temporary
buffer is not freed on this path, leading to a memory leak.
To fix the bug, free the buffer before returning from compat_do_replace().

The broute hook is removed.
It uses skb->cb to signal to bridge rx handler that the skb should be

The [ip,ip6,arp]_tables use x_tables_info internally and the underlying
memory is already accounted to kmemcg. Do the same for ebtables. The
syzbot, by using setsockopt(EBT_SO_SET_ENTRIES), was able to OOM the
whole system from a restricted memcg, a potential DoS.
By accounting the ebt_table_info, the memory used for ebt_table_info can
be contained within the memcg of the allocating process. However the
lifetime of ebt_table_info is independent of the allocating process and
is tied to the network namespace. So, the oom-killer will not be able to
relieve the memory pressure due to ebt_table_info memory. The memory for
ebt_table_info is allocated through vmalloc. Currently vmalloc does not
handle the oom-killed allocating process correctly and one large
allocation can bypass memcg limit enforcement. So, with this patch,
at least the small allocations will be contained. For large allocations,
we need to fix vmalloc.

The vmalloc() function has no 2-factor argument form, so multiplication
factors need to be wrapped in array_size(). This patch replaces cases of:
vmalloc(a * b)
with:
vmalloc(array_size(a, b))
as well as handling cases of:
vmalloc(a * b * c)
with:
vmalloc(array3_size(a, b, c))
This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like:
vmalloc(4 * 1024)
though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion.
Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were
dropped, since they're redundant.
The Coccinelle script used for this was:
// Fix redundant parens around sizeof().

Pull audit updates from Paul Moore:
"Another reasonable chunk of audit changes for v4.18, thirteen patches
in total.
The thirteen patches can mostly be broken down into one of four
categories: general bug fixes, accessor functions for audit state
stored in the task_struct, negative filter matches on executable
names, and extending the (relatively) new seccomp logging knobs to the
audit subsystem.
The main driver for the accessor functions from Richard are the
changes we're working on to associate audit events with containers,
but I think they have some standalone value too so I figured it would
be good to get them in now.
The seccomp/audit patches from Tyler apply the seccomp logging
improvements from a few releases ago to audit's seccomp logging;
starting with this patchset the changes in
/proc/sys/kernel/seccomp/actions_logged should apply to both the
standard kernel logging and audit.

the ebtables evaluation loop expects targets to return
positive values (jumps), or negative values (absolute verdicts).
This is completely different from what xtables does.
In xtables, targets are expected to return the standard netfilter
verdicts, i.e. NF_DROP, NF_ACCEPT, etc.
ebtables will consider these as jumps.
Therefore reject any target found due to unspec fallback.
v2: also reject watchers. ebtables ignores their return value, so
a target that assumes skb ownership (and returns NF_STOLEN) causes
use-after-free.
The only watchers in the 'ebtables' front-end are log and nflog;
both have AF_BRIDGE specific wrappers on kernel side.

while on 32-bit arm these structs have a size of 36 bytes.

match functions(ebt_xxx.c) return false when received frame is not matched

Currently ebtables assumes that the revision number of all match
modules is 0, which is an issue when trying to use existing
xtables matches with ebtables. The solution is to modify ebtables
to allow extensions to specify a revision number, similar to
iptables. This gets passed down to the kernel, which is then able
to find the match module correctly.
To main binary backwards compatibility, the size of the ebt_entry
structures is not changed, only the size of the name field is
decreased by 1 byte to make room for the revision field.

Several reasons for this:
* Several modules maintain internal version numbers, that they print at
boot/module load time, that are not exposed to userspace, as a
primitive mechanism to make revision number control from the earlier
days of Netfilter.
* IPset shows the protocol version at boot/module load time, instead
display this via module description, as Jozsef suggested.
* Remove copyright notice at boot/module load time in two spots, the
Netfilter codebase is a collective development effort, if we would
have to display copyrights for each contributor at boot/module load
time for each extensions we have, we would probably fill up logs with
lots of useless information - from a technical standpoint.
So let's be consistent and remove them all.

When looking up an iptables rule, the iptables binary compares the
aligned match and target data (XT_ALIGN). In some cases this can
exceed the actual data size to include padding bytes.
Before commit f77bc5b23fb1 ("iptables: use match, target and data
copy_to_user helpers") the malloc()ed bytes were overwritten by the
kernel with kzalloced contents, zeroing the padding and making the
comparison succeed. After this patch, the kernel copies and clears
only data, leaving the padding bytes undefined.
Extend the clear operation from data size to aligned data size to
include the padding bytes, if any.
Padding bytes can be observed in both match and target, and the bug
triggered, by issuing a rule with match icmp and target ACCEPT:
iptables -t mangle -A INPUT -i lo -p icmp --icmp-type 1 -j ACCEPT
iptables -t mangle -D INPUT -i lo -p icmp --icmp-type 1 -j ACCEPT

If a requested extension exists as module and is not loaded,
ebt_check_match() might accidentally use an NFPROTO_UNSPEC one with same
name and fail.
Reproduced with limit match: Given xt_limit and ebt_limit both built as
module, the following would fail:
modprobe xt_limit
ebtables -I INPUT --limit 1/s -j ACCEPT
The fix is to make ebt_check_match() distrust a found NFPROTO_UNSPEC
extension and retry after requesting an appropriate module.

Nearly everything thing of interest to ebt_do_table is already present
in nf_hook_state. Simplify ebt_do_table by just passing in the skb,
nf_hook_state, and the table. This make the code easier to read and
maintenance easier.
To support this create an nf_hook_state on the stack in ebt_broute

This partially reverts commit 1086bbe97a07 ("netfilter: ensure number of

All xtables variants suffer from the defect that the copy_to_user()
to copy the counters to user memory may fail after the table has
already been exchanged and thus exposed. Return an error at this
point will result in freeing the already exposed table. Any
subsequent packet processing will result in a kernel panic.
We can't copy the counters before exposing the new tables as we
want provide the counter state after the old table has been
unhooked. Therefore convert this into a silent error.

The optimizations in commit 255d0dc34068a976
(netfilter: x_table: speedup compat operations) assume that
xt_compat_add_offset is called once per rule.
ebtables however called it for each match/target found in a rule.

is sufficient to move the xt_compat_add_offset call to a more reasonable

One iptables invocation with 135000 rules takes 35 seconds of cpu time
on a recent server, using a 32bit distro and a 64bit kernel.
We eventually trigger NMI/RCU watchdog.
INFO: rcu_sched_state detected stall on CPU 3 (t=6000 jiffies)
COMPAT mode has quadratic behavior and consume 16 bytes of memory per
rule.
Switch the xt_compat algos to use an array instead of list, and use a
binary search to locate an offset in the sorted array.
This halves memory need (8 bytes per rule), and removes quadratic
behavior [ O(N*N) -> O(N*log2(N)) ]

implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h
percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.
percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.
http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py
The script does the followings.
* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.
* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.
* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
file.
The conversion was done in the following steps.
1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
files.
2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
inclusions to around 150 files.
3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.
4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.
5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
necessary.
6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.
7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).
* x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
* powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
* sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
* ia64 SMP allmodconfig
* s390 SMP allmodconfig
* alpha SMP allmodconfig
* um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig
8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
a separate patch and serve as bisection point.
Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

ebtables can be compiled to perform userspace-side padding of
structures. In that case, all the structures are already in the
'native' format expected by the kernel.
This tries to determine what format the userspace program is
using.
For most set/getsockopts, this can be done by checking
the len argument for sizeof(compat_ebt_replace) and
re-trying the native handler on error.
In case of EBT_SO_GET_ENTRIES, the native handler is tried first,
it will error out early when checking the *len argument
(the compat version has to defer this check until after
iterating over the kernel data set once, to adjust for all
the structure size differences).
As this would cause error printks, remove those as well, as
recommended by Bart de Schuymer.

Main code for 32 bit userland ebtables binary with 64 bit kernels
support.
Tested on x86_64 kernel only, using 64bit ebtables binary
for output comparision.
At least ebt_mark, m_mark and ebt_limit need CONFIG_COMPAT hooks, too.
remaining problem:
The ebtables userland makefile has:
ifeq ($(shell uname -m),sparc64)
CFLAGS+=-DEBT_MIN_ALIGN=8 -DKERNEL_64_USERSPACE_32
endif
struct ebt_replace, ebt_entry_match etc. then contain userland-side
padding, i.e. even if we are called from a 32 bit userland, the
structures may already be in the right format.
This problem is addressed in a follow-up patch.

* return ebt_table from ebt_register_table(), module code will save it into
per-netns data for unregistration
* duplicate ebt_table at the very beginning of registration -- it's added into
list, so one ebt_table wouldn't end up in many lists (and each netns has
different one)
* introduce underscored tables in individial modules, this is temporary to not

The function signatures for Xtables extensions have grown over time.
It involves a lot of typing/replication, and also a bit of stack space
even if they are not used. Realize an NFWS2008 idea and pack them into
structs. The skb remains outside of the struct so gcc can continue to
apply its optimizations.
This patch does this for match extensions' match functions.
A few ambiguities have also been addressed. The "offset" parameter for
example has been renamed to "fragoff" (there are so many different
offsets already) and "protoff" to "thoff" (there is more than just one
protocol here, so clarify).

* Convert files to UTF-8.
* Also correct some people's names
(one example is Eißfeldt, which was found in a source file.
Given that the author used an ß at all in a source file
indicates that the real name has in fact a 'ß' and not an 'ss',
which is commonly used as a substitute for 'ß' when limited to
7bit.)

So I've had a deadlock reported to me. I've found that the sequence of
events goes like this:
1) process A (modprobe) runs to remove ip_tables.ko
2) process B (iptables-restore) runs and calls setsockopt on a netfilter socket,
increasing the ip_tables socket_ops use count
3) process A acquires a file lock on the file ip_tables.ko, calls remove_module
in the kernel, which in turn executes the ip_tables module cleanup routine,
which calls nf_unregister_sockopt
4) nf_unregister_sockopt, seeing that the use count is non-zero, puts the
calling process into uninterruptible sleep, expecting the process using the
socket option code to wake it up when it exits the kernel
4) the user of the socket option code (process B) in do_ipt_get_ctl, calls
ipt_find_table_lock, which in this case calls request_module to load
ip_tables_nat.ko
5) request_module forks a copy of modprobe (process C) to load the module and
blocks until modprobe exits.
6) Process C. forked by request_module process the dependencies of
ip_tables_nat.ko, of which ip_tables.ko is one.
7) Process C attempts to lock the request module and all its dependencies, it
blocks when it attempts to lock ip_tables.ko (which was previously locked in
step 3)
Theres not really any great permanent solution to this that I can see, but I've
developed a two part solution that corrects the problem
Part 1) Modifies the nf_sockopt registration code so that, instead of using a
use counter internal to the nf_sockopt_ops structure, we instead use a pointer
to the registering modules owner to do module reference counting when nf_sockopt
calls a modules set/get routine. This prevents the deadlock by preventing set 4
from happening.
Part 2) Enhances the modprobe utilty so that by default it preforms non-blocking
remove operations (the same way rmmod does), and add an option to explicity
request blocking operation. So if you select blocking operation in modprobe you
can still cause the above deadlock, but only if you explicity try (and since
root can do any old stupid thing it would like.... :) ).

We frequently need the maximum number of possible processors in order to
allocate arrays for all processors. So far this was done using
highest_possible_processor_id(). However, we do need the number of
processors not the highest id. Moreover the number was so far dynamically
calculated on each invokation. The number of possible processors does not
change when the system is running. We can therefore calculate that number
once.

After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h
recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes.
There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need
anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for
macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the
course of cleaning it up.
To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only
removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble.
Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha,
arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig,
allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all
configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were
introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted
by unnecessarily included header files).

for_each_cpu() actually iterates across all possible CPUs. We've had mistakes
in the past where people were using for_each_cpu() where they should have been
iterating across only online or present CPUs. This is inefficient and
possibly buggy.

future.
