2023-12-15usb-storage: Add quirk for incorrect WP on Kingston DT Ultimate 3.0 G3Tasos Sahanidis1-0/+11
This flash drive reports write protect during the first mode sense. In the past this was not an issue as the kernel called revalidate twice, thus asking the device for its write protect status twice, with write protect being disabled in the second mode sense. However, since commit 1e029397d12f ("scsi: sd: Reorganize DIF/DIX code to avoid calling revalidate twice") that is no longer the case, thus the device shows up read only. 2022-09-22Revert "usb: storage: Add quirk for Samsung Fit flash"sunghwan jung1-6/+0
This reverts commit 86d92f5465958752481269348d474414dccb1552, which fix the timeout issue for "Samsung Fit Flash". But the commit affects not only "Samsung Fit Flash" but also other usb storages that use the same controller and causes severe performance regression. # hdparm -t /dev/sda (without the quirk) Timing buffered disk reads: 622 MB in 3.01 seconds = 206.66 MB/sec # hdparm -t /dev/sda (with the quirk) Timing buffered disk reads: 220 MB in 3.00 seconds = 73.32 MB/sec The commit author mentioned that "Issue was reproduced after device has bad block", so this quirk should be applied when we have the timeout issue with a device that has bad blocks. We revert the commit so that we apply this quirk by adding kernel paramters using a bootloader or other ways when we really need it, without the performance regression with devices that don't have the issue. Two people have reported (and mentioned numerous other reports on the web) that VIA's VL817 USB-SATA bridge does not work with the uas driver. The cause of the differing behaviors is not known. In the hope of getting the devices to work for the most users, even at the possible cost of degraded performance for some, this patch adds an unusual_devs entry for the VL817 to block it from binding to the uas driver by default. Users will be able to override this entry by means of a module parameter, if they want. 2021-10-18usb-storage: Add compatibility quirk flags for iODD 2531/2541James Buren1-0/+10
These drive enclosures have firmware bugs that make it impossible to mount a new virtual ISO image after Linux ejects the old one if the device is locked by Linux. Windows bypasses this problem by the fact that they do not lock the device. Add a quirk to disable device locking for these drive enclosures. 2021-03-17usb-storage: Add quirk to defeat Kindle's automatic unloadAlan Stern1-0/+12
Matthias reports that the Amazon Kindle automatically removes its emulated media if it doesn't receive another SCSI command within about one second after a SYNCHRONIZE CACHE. It does so even when the host has sent a PREVENT MEDIUM REMOVAL command. The reason for this behavior isn't clear, although it's not hard to make some guesses. At any rate, the results can be unexpected for anyone who tries to access the Kindle in an unusual fashion, and in theory they can lead to data loss (for example, if one file is closed and synchronized while other files are still in the middle of being written). To avoid such problems, this patch creates a new usb-storage quirks flag telling the driver always to issue a REQUEST SENSE following a SYNCHRONIZE CACHE command, and adds an unusual_devs entry for the Kindle with the flag set. This is sufficient to prevent the Kindle from doing its automatic unload, without interfering with proper operation. Another possible way to deal with this would be to increase the frequency of TEST UNIT READY polling that the kernel normally carries out for removable-media storage devices. However that would increase the overall load on the system and it is not as reliable, because the user can override the polling interval. Changing the driver's behavior is safer and has minimal overhead. 2020-04-23usb-storage: Add unusual_devs entry for JMicron JMS566Alan Stern1-0/+7
Cyril Roelandt reports that his JMicron JMS566 USB-SATA bridge fails to handle WRITE commands with the FUA bit set, even though it claims to support FUA. (Oddly enough, a later version of the same bridge, version 2.03 as opposed to 1.14, doesn't claim to support FUA. Also oddly, the bridge _does_ support FUA when using the UAS transport instead of the Bulk-Only transport -- but this device was blacklisted for uas in commit bc3bdb12bbb3 ("usb-storage: Disable UAS on JMicron SATA enclosure") for apparently unrelated reasons.) This patch adds a usb-storage unusual_devs entry with the BROKEN_FUA flag. This allows the bridge to work properly with usb-storage. Current driver has 240 (USB2.0) and 2048 (USB3.0) as max_sectors, e.g., /sys/bus/scsi/devices/0:0:0:0/max_sectors If data access times out, driver error handling will issue a port reset. Sometimes Samsung Fit (090C:1000) flash disk will not respond to later Set Address or Get Descriptor command. Adding this quirk to limit max_sectors to 64 sectors to avoid issue occurring. Enabling US_FL_BROKEN_FUA quirk solves this issue. This patch adds an UNUSUAL_DEV with US_FL_BROKEN_FUA for the enclosure for both UAS and mass storage. Now that the SPDX tag is in all USB files, that identifies the license in a specific and legally-defined manner. So the extra GPL text wording can be removed as it is no longer needed at all. This is done on a quest to remove the 700+ different ways that files in the kernel describe the GPL license text. And there's unneeded stuff like the address (sometimes incorrect) for the FSF which is never needed. No copyright headers or other non-license-description text was removed. It's good to have SPDX identifiers in all files to make it easier to audit the kernel tree for correct licenses. Update the drivers/usb/ and include/linux/usb* files with the correct SPDX license identifier based on the license text in the file itself. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This device automatically switches itself to another mode (0x1405) unless the specific access pattern of Windows is followed in its initial mode. That makes a dirty unmount of the internal storage devices inevitable if they are mounted. So the card reader of such a device should be ignored, lest an unclean removal become inevitable. This replaces an earlier patch that ignored all LUNs of this device. That patch was overly broad. The already-present quirk for 04E6:000B has USB_SC_SCSI/USB_PR_BULK, not USB_SC_DEVICE/USB_PR_DEVICE. Change the 04E6:000F quirk to match that, since it will probably be required. Castlewood Systems supplied various models of USB-SCSI converter with their ORB external removable-media drive. The ORB Windows and Macintosh drivers support six USB IDs: 084B:A001 [VID 084B is Castlewood Systems] 04E6:0002 (*) ORB USB Smart Cable P/N 88205-001 (generic SCM ID) 2027:A001 Double-H Technology DH-2000SC 1822:0001 (*) Ariston iConnect/iSCSI 07AF:0004 (*) Microtech XpressSCSI (25-pin) 07AF:0005 (*) Microtech XpressSCSI (50-pin) *: quirk already in unusual-devs.h [Apparently the official VID for Double-H Technology is 0x07EB = 2027 decimal. That's another hex/decimal mix-up with these SCM-based products (in addition to the Ariston and Entrega ones). Perhaps the USB-IF informed companies of their allocated VID in decimal, but they assumed it was hex? It seems all Entrega products used VID 0x1645, not just the USB-SCSI converter.] Double-H Technology Co., Ltd. produced a USB-SCSI converter, model DH-2000SC, which is probably the one supported by the ORB drivers. Perhaps the Castlewood-bundled product had a different label or PID though? Castlewood mentioned Conmate as being one type of USB-SCSI converter. Conmate and Double-H seem related somehow; both company addresses in the same road, and at one point the Conmate web site mentioned DH-2000H4, DH-200D4/DH-2000C4 as models of USB hub (DH short for Double-H presumably). Conmate did show a USB-SCSI converter model CM-660 on their web site at one point. My guess is that was identical to the DH-2000SC. 2014-09-19USB: storage: Add quirks for Entrega/Xircom USB to SCSI convertersMark1-0/+20
This patch adds quirks for Entrega Technologies (later Xircom PortGear) USB- SCSI converters. They use Shuttle Technology EUSB-01/EUSB-S1 chips. The US_FL_SCM_MULT_TARG quirk is needed to allow multiple devices on the SCSI chain to be accessed. Without it only the (single) device with SCSI ID 0 can be used. The standalone converter sold by Entrega had model number U1-SC25. Xircom acquired Entrega and re-branded the product line PortGear. The PortGear USB to SCSI Converter (model PGSCSI) is internally identical to the Entrega product, but later models may use a different USB ID. The Entrega-branded units have USB ID 1645:0007, as does my Xircom PGSCSI, but the Windows and Macintosh drivers also support 085A:0028. Entrega also sold the "Mac USB Dock", which provides two USB ports, a Mac (8-pin mini-DIN) serial port and a SCSI port. It appears to the computer as a four-port hub, USB-serial, and USB-SCSI converters. The USB-SCSI part may have initially used the same ID as the standalone U1-SC25 (1645:0007), but later production used 085A:0026. My Xircom PortGear PGSCSI has bcdDevice=0x0100. Units with bcdDevice=0x0133 probably also exist. This patch adds quirks for 1645:0007, 085A:0026 and 085A:0028. The Windows driver INF file also mentions 085A:0032 "PortStation SCSI Module", but I couldn't find any mention of that actually existing in the wild; perhaps it was cancelled before release? The Iomega Jaz USB Adapter is a SCSI-USB converter cable. The hardware seems to be identical to e.g. the Microtech XpressSCSI, using a Shuttle/ SCM chip set. However its firmware restricts it to only work with Jaz drives. On connecting the cable a message like this appears four times in the log: reset full speed USB device number 4 using uhci_hcd That's non-fatal but the US_FL_SINGLE_LUN quirk fixes it. 2013-03-07USB: storage: fix Huawei mode switching regressionBjørn Mork1-2/+327
This reverts commit 200e0d99 ("USB: storage: optimize to match the Huawei USB storage devices and support new switch command" and the followup bugfix commit cd060956 ("USB: storage: properly handle the endian issues of idProduct"). The commit effectively added a large number of Huawei devices to the deprecated usb-storage mode switching logic. Many of these devices have been in use and supported by the userspace usb_modeswitch utility for years. Forcing the switching inside the kernel causes a number of regressions as a result of ignoring existing onfigurations, and also completely takes away the ability to configure mode switching per device/system/user. Known regressions caused by this: - Some of the devices support multiple modes, using different switching commands. There are existing configurations taking advantage of this. - There is a real use case for disabling mode switching and instead mounting the exposed storage device. This becomes impossible with switching logic inside the usb-storage driver. - At least on device fail as a result of the usb-storage switching command, becoming completely unswitchable. This is possibly a firmware bug, but still a regression because the device work as expected using usb_modeswitch defaults. In-kernel mode switching was deprecated years ago with the development of the more user friendly userspace alternatives. The existing list of devices in usb-storage was only kept to prevent breaking already working systems. The long term plan is to remove the list, not to add to it. 2011-06-07usb-storage: redo incorrect readsAlan Stern1-0/+19
Some USB mass-storage devices have bugs that cause them not to handle the first READ(10) command they receive correctly. The Corsair Padlock v2 returns completely bogus data for its first read (possibly it returns the data in encrypted form even though the device is supposed to be unlocked). The Feiya SD/SDHC card reader fails to complete the first READ(10) command after it is plugged in or after a new card is inserted, returning a status code that indicates it thinks the command was invalid, which prevents the kernel from retrying the read. Since the first read of a new device or a new medium is for the partition sector, the kernel is unable to retrieve the device's partition table. Users have to manually issue an "hdparm -z" or "blockdev --rereadpt" command before they can access the device. This patch (as1470) works around the problem. It adds a new quirk flag, US_FL_INVALID_READ10, indicating that the first READ(10) should always be retried immediately, as should any failing READ(10) commands (provided the preceding READ(10) command succeeded, to avoid getting stuck in a loop). The patch also adds appropriate unusual_devs entries containing the new flag. Resolves kernel.org bug 14914. Remove entry for 2770:915d (usb digital camera with mass storage support) from unusual_devs.h. The fix triggered by the entry causes the file system on the camera to be completely inaccessible (no partition table, the device is not mountable). The patch works, but let me clarify a few things about it. All the patch does is remove the entry for this device from the drivers/usb/storage/unusual_devs.h, which is supposed to help with a problem with the device's reported size (I think). I'm pretty sure it was originally added for a reason, so I'm not sure removing it won't cause other problems to reappear. Also, I should note that this unusual_devs.h entry was present (and activating workarounds) in 2.6.29, but in that version everything works fine. Starting with 2.6.30, things no longer work. This patch (as1311) fixes a problem in usb-storage: Some devices are pretty broken when it comes to reporting sense data. The information they send back indicates that they have more than 18 bytes of sense data available, but when the system asks for more than 18 they fail or hang. The symptom is that probing fails with multiple resets. The patch adds a new BAD_SENSE flag to indicate that usb-storage should never ask for more than 18 bytes of sense data. The flag can be set in an unusual_devs entry or via the "quirks=" module parameter, and it is set automatically whenever a REQUEST SENSE command for more than 18 bytes fails or times out. An unusual_devs entry is added for the Agfa photo frame, which uses a Prolific chip having this bug. This patch (as1207) converts usb-storage's sddr09 subdriver into a separate module. An unexpected complication arises because of DPCM devices, in which one LUN uses the sddr09 transport and one uses the standard CB transport. Since these devices can be used even when USB_STORAGE_SDDR09 isn't configured, their entries in unusual_devs.h require special treatment. If SDDR09 isn't configured then the entries remain in unusual_devs.h; if it is then the entries are present in unusual_sddr09.h instead. These companies seem to include the READ CAPACITY bug in all of their devices. Since cell phones and digital cameras rely on flash storage, which always has an even number of sectors, setting CAPACITY_HEURISTICS shouldn't cause any problems. Not even if the companies wise up and start making devices without the bug. A large number of unusual_devs entries are now unnecessary, so the patch removes them. 2009-01-07USB: storage: add last-sector hacksAlan Stern1-1/+15
This patch (as1189b) adds some hacks to usb-storage for dealing with the growing problems involving bad capacity values and last-sector accesses: A new flag, US_FL_CAPACITY_OK, is created to indicate that the device is known to report its capacity correctly. An unusual_devs entry for Linux's own File-backed Storage Gadget is added with this flag set, since g_file_storage always reports the correct capacity and since the capacity need not be even (it is determined by the size of the backing file). An entry in unusual_devs.h which has only the CAPACITY_OK flag set shouldn't prejudice libusual, since the device will work perfectly well with either usb-storage or ub. So a new macro, COMPLIANT_DEV, is added to let libusual know about these entries. When a last-sector access succeeds and the total number of sectors is odd (the unexpected case, in which guessing that the number is even might cause trouble), a WARN is triggered. The kerneloops.org project will collect these warnings, allowing us to add CAPACITY_OK flags for the devices in question before implementing the default-to-even heuristic. If users want to prevent the stack dump produced by the WARN, they can disable the hack by adding an unusual_devs entry for their device with the CAPACITY_OK flag. When a last-sector access fails three times in a row and neither the FIX_CAPACITY nor the CAPACITY_OK flag is set, we assume the last-sector bug is present. We replace the existing status and sense data with values that will cause the SCSI core to fail the access immediately rather than retry indefinitely. This should fix the difficulties people have been having with Nokia phones. Thus, by default just kill the driver CD device by sending the SCSI 'rezero' command, but allow override of the default behavior via usb-storage module parameter so users can keep the ZeroCD device if they really want to. 2009-01-07USB: usb-storage: merge DPCM support into SDDR09Alan Stern1-2/+20
The DPCM subdriver is a little peculiar, in that it's meant to support devices where LUN 0 is Compact Flash and uses the CB transport whereas LUN 1 is SmartMedia and uses the SDDR09 transport. Thus DPCM isn't really a transport in itself; it's more like a demultiplexer. Much of the DPCM code is part of the SDDR09 subdriver already, and the remaining part is fairly small. This patch (as1182) moves that extra piece into sddr09.c, thereby eliminating dpcm.c. Also eliminated is the Kconfig entry for DPCM support; it is now listed as part of the SDDR09 entry. In order to make sure that the semantics are the same as before, each unusual_devs entry for DPCM is now present twice: once with DPCM support if SDDR09 is configured (as before), and once with the SINGLE_LUN flag and CB support otherwise. So to declare the unusual device for new Huawei data card devices in unusual_devs.h and to declare more new product IDs in option.c. To modify the data value and length in the function of usb_stor_huawei_e220_init in initializers.c That's because based on the USB standard, while sending SET_FETURE_D to the device, it requires the corresponding data to be zero, and its sending length also must be zero. In our old solution, it can be compatible with our WCDMA data card devices, but can not support our CDMA data card devices. But in this new solution, it can be compatible with all of our data card devices. This patch upgrades the support for the Sierra Wireless TRU-Install feature (i.e. zeroCD) to allow for future support of Linux enabled TRU-Install devices. By default all devices that do not have a Linux enabled TRU-Install device (i.e. the device does not have a Linux package on the virtual CD partition) will be switched into "modem mode." Devices that do contain a Linux package in the TRU-Install virtual CD will be allowed to enumerate as a CD-Rom so that either (a) a user can install the packaged software or (b) a user-space application (e.g. udev) can switch it to modem mode. This patch does allow for manual override by adding a usb-storage module parameter 'swi_tru_install' which can force the modem into either mode regardless of what packages it contains. I have got a cypress usb-ide bridge and I would like to tune or monitor my disk with tools like hdparm, hddtemp or smartctl. My controller support a way to send raw ATA command to the disk with something call atacb (see http://download.cypress.com.edgesuite.net/design_resources/datasheets/contents/cy7c68300c_8.pdf). Atacb support can be added for each application, but there is some disadvantages : - all application need to be patched - A race is possible if there other accesses, because the emulation can be split in 2 atacb scsi transactions. One for sending the command, one for reading the register (if ck_cond is set). I have implemented the emulation in usb-storage with a special proto_handler, and an unsual entry. This patch (as1032) removes the Clear-Halt calls in usb_stor_Bulk_max_lun(). Evidently some devices (such as the Oracom MP3 player) really don't like to receive these requests when their bulk endpoints aren't halted. The only reason for adding them originally was to get an ancient ZIP-100 drive to work. But since this device has only a single LUN, we don't need to send it a Get-Max-LUN request at all. Adding an unusual_devs entry for the ZIP-100 with the SINGLE_LUN flag set will cause this step to be skipped. When a device cannot handle the smallest previously limited transfer size (64 blocks) without stalling, limit the device to the amount of packets that fit in a platform native page. The lowest possible limit is PAGE_CACHE_SIZE, so if the device is ever used on a platform that has larger than 8K pages, you lose unless you can convince the device firmware folks to fix the issue.
