2015-02-01sched: don't cause task state changes in nested sleep debuggingLinus Torvalds2-4/+3
Commit 8eb23b9f35aa ("sched: Debug nested sleeps") added code to report on nested sleep conditions, which we generally want to avoid because the inner sleeping operation can re-set the thread state to TASK_RUNNING, but that will then cause the outer sleep loop not actually sleep when it calls schedule. However, that's actually valid traditional behavior, with the inner sleep being some fairly rare case (like taking a sleeping lock that normally doesn't actually need to sleep). And the debug code would actually change the state of the task to TASK_RUNNING internally, which makes that kind of traditional and working code not work at all, because now the nested sleep doesn't just sometimes cause the outer one to not block, but will cause it to happen every time. In particular, it will cause the cardbus kernel daemon (pccardd) to basically busy-loop doing scheduling, converting a laptop into a heater, as reported by Bruno Prémont. But there may be other legacy uses of that nested sleep model in other drivers that are also likely to never get converted to the new model. This fixes both cases: - don't set TASK_RUNNING when the nested condition happens (note: even if WARN_ONCE() only _warns_ once, the return value isn't whether the warning happened, but whether the condition for the warning was true. So despite the warning only happening once, the "if (WARN_ON(..))" would trigger for every nested sleep. - in the cases where we knowingly disable the warning by using "sched_annotate_sleep()", don't change the task state (that is used for all core scheduling decisions), instead use '->task_state_change' that is used for the debugging decision itself. When handling a fault in stage-2, we need to resync I$ and D$, just to be sure we don't leave any old cache line behind. That's very good, except that we do so using the *user* address. Under heavy load (swapping like crazy), we may end up in a situation where the page gets mapped in stage-2 while being unmapped from userspace by another CPU. At that point, the DC/IC instructions can generate a fault, which we handle with kvm->mmu_lock held. The box quickly deadlocks, user is unhappy. Instead, perform this invalidation through the kernel mapping, which is guaranteed to be present. The box is much happier, and so am I. Let's assume a guest has created an uncached mapping, and written to that page. Let's also assume that the host uses a cache-coherent IO subsystem. Let's finally assume that the host is under memory pressure and starts to swap things out. Before this "uncached" page is evicted, we need to make sure we invalidate potential speculated, clean cache lines that are sitting there, or the IO subsystem is going to swap out the cached view, loosing the data that has been written directly into memory. Trying to emulate the behaviour of set/way cache ops is fairly pointless, as there are too many ways we can end-up missing stuff. Also, there is some system caches out there that simply ignore set/way operations. So instead of trying to implement them, let's convert it to VA ops, and use them as a way to re-enable the trapping of VM ops. That way, we can detect the point when the MMU/caches are turned off, and do a full VM flush (which is what the guest was trying to do anyway). This allows a 32bit zImage to boot on the APM thingy, and will probably help bootloaders in general. The stack guard page error case has long incorrectly caused a SIGBUS rather than a SIGSEGV, but nobody actually noticed until commit fee7e49d4514 ("mm: propagate error from stack expansion even for guard page") because that error case was never actually triggered in any normal situations. Now that we actually report the error, people noticed the wrong signal that resulted. So far, only the test suite of libsigsegv seems to have actually cared, but there are real applications that use libsigsegv, so let's not wait for any of those to break. 2015-01-29arm: dma-mapping: Set DMA IOMMU ops in arm_iommu_attach_device()Laurent Pinchart1-15/+38
Commit 4bb25789ed28228a ("arm: dma-mapping: plumb our iommu mapping ops into arch_setup_dma_ops") moved the setting of the DMA operations from arm_iommu_attach_device() to arch_setup_dma_ops() where the DMA operations to be used are selected based on whether the device is connected to an IOMMU. However, the IOMMU detection scheme requires the IOMMU driver to be ported to the new IOMMU of_xlate API. As no driver has been ported yet, this effectively breaks all IOMMU ARM users that depend on the IOMMU being handled transparently by the DMA mapping API. Fix this by restoring the setting of DMA IOMMU ops in arm_iommu_attach_device() and splitting the rest of the function into a new internal __arm_iommu_attach_device() function, called by arch_setup_dma_ops(). 2015-01-29vm: add VM_FAULT_SIGSEGV handling supportLinus Torvalds30-7/+63
The core VM already knows about VM_FAULT_SIGBUS, but cannot return a "you should SIGSEGV" error, because the SIGSEGV case was generally handled by the caller - usually the architecture fault handler. That results in lots of duplication - all the architecture fault handlers end up doing very similar "look up vma, check permissions, do retries etc" - but it generally works. However, there are cases where the VM actually wants to SIGSEGV, and applications _expect_ SIGSEGV. In particular, when accessing the stack guard page, libsigsegv expects a SIGSEGV. And it usually got one, because the stack growth is handled by that duplicated architecture fault handler. However, when the generic VM layer started propagating the error return from the stack expansion in commit fee7e49d4514 ("mm: propagate error from stack expansion even for guard page"), that now exposed the existing VM_FAULT_SIGBUS result to user space. And user space really expected SIGSEGV, not SIGBUS. To fix that case, we need to add a VM_FAULT_SIGSEGV, and teach all those duplicate architecture fault handlers about it. They all already have the code to handle SIGSEGV, so it's about just tying that new return value to the existing code, but it's all a bit annoying. This is the mindless minimal patch to do this. A more extensive patch would be to try to gather up the mostly shared fault handling logic into one generic helper routine, and long-term we really should do that cleanup. Just from this patch, you can generally see that most architectures just copied (directly or indirectly) the old x86 way of doing things, but in the meantime that original x86 model has been improved to hold the VM semaphore for shorter times etc and to handle VM_FAULT_RETRY and other "newer" things, so it would be a good idea to bring all those improvements to the generic case and teach other architectures about them too. disabled Since commit f2c3c67f00 (merge commit that adds commit "ARM: mvebu: completely disable hardware I/O coherency"), we disable I/O coherency on Armada EBU platforms. However, we continue to initialize the coherency fabric, because this coherency fabric is needed on Armada XP for inter-CPU coherency. Unfortunately, due to this, we also continued to execute the coherency fabric initialization code for Armada 375/38x, which switched the PL310 into I/O coherent mode. This has the effect of disabling the outer cache sync operation: this is needed when I/O coherency is enabled to work around a PCIe/L2 deadlock. But obviously, when I/O coherency is disabled, having the outer cache sync operation is crucial. Therefore, this commit fixes the armada_375_380_coherency_init() so that the PL310 is switched to I/O coherent mode only if I/O coherency is enabled. Without this fix, all devices using DMA are broken on Armada 375/38x. 2015-01-28rbd: fix rbd_dev_parent_get() when parent_overlap == 0Ilya Dryomov1-14/+6
The comment for rbd_dev_parent_get() said * We must get the reference before checking for the overlap to * coordinate properly with zeroing the parent overlap in * rbd_dev_v2_parent_info() when an image gets flattened. We * drop it again if there is no overlap. but the "drop it again if there is no overlap" part was missing from the implementation. This lead to absurd parent_ref values for images with parent_overlap == 0, as parent_ref was incremented for each img_request and virtually never decremented. Fix this by leveraging the fact that refresh path calls rbd_dev_v2_parent_info() under header_rwsem and use it for read in rbd_dev_parent_get(), instead of messing around with atomics. Get rid of barriers in rbd_dev_v2_parent_info() while at it - I don't see what they'd pair with now and I suspect we are in a pretty miserable situation as far as proper locking goes regardless. The fix from 9fc81d87420d ("perf: Fix events installation during moving group") was incomplete in that it failed to recognise that creating a group with events for different CPUs is semantically broken -- they cannot be co-scheduled. Furthermore, it leads to real breakage where, when we create an event for CPU Y and then migrate it to form a group on CPU X, the code gets confused where the counter is programmed -- triggered in practice as well by me via the perf fuzzer. Fix this by tightening the rules for creating groups. Only allow grouping of counters that can be co-scheduled in the same context. This means for the same task and/or the same cpu. 2015-01-28quota: Switch ->get_dqblk() and ->set_dqblk() to use bytes as space unitsJan Kara8-195/+318
Currently ->get_dqblk() and ->set_dqblk() use struct fs_disk_quota which tracks space limits and usage in 512-byte blocks. However VFS quotas track usage in bytes (as some filesystems require that) and we need to somehow pass this information. Upto now it wasn't a problem because we didn't do any unit conversion (thus VFS quota routines happily stuck number of bytes into d_bcount field of struct fd_disk_quota). Only if you tried to use Q_XGETQUOTA or Q_XSETQLIM for VFS quotas (or Q_GETQUOTA / Q_SETQUOTA for XFS quotas), you got bogus results. Hardly anyone tried this but reportedly some Samba users hit the problem in practice. So when we want interfaces compatible we need to fix this. We bite the bullet and define another quota structure used for passing information from/to ->get_dqblk()/->set_dqblk. It's somewhat sad we have to have more conversion routines in fs/quota/quota.c and another copying of quota structure slows down getting of quota information by about 2% but it seems cleaner than overloading e.g. units of d_bcount to bytes. The idea was that we don't want to release the preallocation for an inode on close when there are other writeable file descriptors for the inode. However the condition was written in the opposite way so we released preallocation only if there were other writeable file descriptors. Fix the problem by changing the condition properly. In the case when alloc_netdev fails we return NULL to a caller. But there is no check for NULL in the probe drivers. This patch changes NULL to an error pointer. An exception is seen in ICMP ping receive path where the skb destructor sock_rfree() tries to access a freed socket. This happens because ping_rcv() releases socket reference with sock_put() and this internally frees up the socket. While working on rhashtable walking I noticed that the UDP diag dumping code is buggy. In particular, the socket skipping within a chain never happens, even though we record the number of sockets that should be skipped. As this code was supposedly copied from TCP, this patch does what TCP does and resets num before we walk a chain. 2015-01-27can: kvaser_usb: Fix state handling upon BUS_ERROR eventsAhmed S. Darwish1-4/+3
While being in an ERROR_WARNING state, and receiving further bus error events with error counters still in the ERROR_WARNING range of 97-127 inclusive, the state handling code erroneously reverts back to ERROR_ACTIVE. Per the CAN standard, only revert to ERROR_ACTIVE when the error counters are less than 96. Moreover, in certain Kvaser models, the BUS_ERROR flag is always set along with undefined bits in the M16C status register. Upon receiving a hardware event with the BUS_RESET flag set, the driver kills all of its anchored URBs and resets all of its transmit URB contexts. Unfortunately it does so under the context of URB completion handler `kvaser_usb_read_bulk_callback()', which is often called in an atomic context. While the device is flooded with many received error packets, usb_kill_urb() typically sleeps/reschedules till the transfer request of each killed URB in question completes, leading to the sleep in atomic bug. [3] In v2 submission of the original driver patch [1], it was stated that the URBs kill and tx contexts reset was needed since we don't receive any tx acknowledgments later and thus such resources will be locked down forever. Fortunately this is no longer needed since an earlier bugfix in this patch series is now applied: all tx URB contexts are reset upon CAN channel close. Not caching dst_entries which cause redirects could be exploited by hosts on the same subnet, causing a severe DoS attack. This effect aggravated since commit f88649721268999 ("ipv4: fix dst race in sk_dst_get()"). Lookups causing redirects will be allocated with DST_NOCACHE set which will force dst_release to free them via RCU. Unfortunately waiting for RCU grace period just takes too long, we can end up with >1M dst_entries waiting to be released and the system will run OOM. rcuos threads cannot catch up under high softirq load. Attaching the flag to emit a redirect later on to the specific skb allows us to cache those dst_entries thus reducing the pressure on allocation and deallocation. This issue was discovered by Marcelo Leitner. Reference counting of auth keys revisited: Shared keys for AUTH chunks are being stored in endpoints and associations in endpoint_shared_keys list. On endpoint creation, a null key is being added; on association creation, all endpoint shared keys are being cached and thus cloned over to the association. struct sctp_shared_key only holds a pointer to the actual key bytes, that is, struct sctp_auth_bytes which keeps track of users internally through refcounting. Naturally, on assoc or enpoint destruction, sctp_shared_key are being destroyed directly and the reference on sctp_auth_bytes dropped. User space can add keys to either list via setsockopt(2) through struct sctp_authkey and by passing that to sctp_auth_set_key() which replaces or adds a new auth key. There, sctp_auth_create_key() creates a new sctp_auth_bytes with refcount 1 and in case of replacement drops the reference on the old sctp_auth_bytes. A key can be set active from user space through setsockopt() on the id via sctp_auth_set_active_key(), which iterates through either endpoint_shared_keys and in case of an assoc, invokes (one of various places) sctp_auth_asoc_init_active_key(). sctp_auth_asoc_init_active_key() computes the actual secret from local's and peer's random, hmac and shared key parameters and returns a new key directly as sctp_auth_bytes, that is asoc->asoc_shared_key, plus drops the reference if there was a previous one. The secret, which where we eventually double drop the ref comes from sctp_auth_asoc_set_secret() with intitial refcount of 1, which also stays unchanged eventually in sctp_assoc_update(). This key is later being used for crypto layer to set the key for the hash in crypto_hash_setkey() from sctp_auth_calculate_hmac(). To close the loop: asoc->asoc_shared_key is freshly allocated secret material and independant of the sctp_shared_key management keeping track of only shared keys in endpoints and assocs. Hence, also commit 4184b2a79a76 ("net: sctp: fix memory leak in auth key management") is independant of this bug here since it concerns a different layer (though same structures being used eventually). asoc->asoc_shared_key is reference dropped correctly on assoc destruction in sctp_association_free() and when active keys are being replaced in sctp_auth_asoc_init_active_key(), it always has a refcount of 1. Hence, it's freed prematurely in sctp_assoc_update(). Simple fix is to remove that sctp_auth_key_put() from there which fixes these panics. This commit fixes this by using the skb_frag_dma_map() helper, which takes care of mapping the skb fragment properly. Additionally, the type of mapping is now tracked, so it can be unmapped using dma_unmap_page or dma_unmap_single when appropriate. This commit also fixes the error path in txq_init() to release the resources properly. In order to stop the RX path accessing the RX ring while it's being stopped or resized, we clear the interrupt mask (EESIPR) and then call free_irq() or synchronise_irq(). This is insufficient because the interrupt handler or NAPI poller may set EESIPR again after we clear it. Also, in sh_eth_set_ringparam() we currently don't disable NAPI polling at all. I could easily trigger a crash by running the loop: while ethtool -G eth0 rx 128 && ethtool -G eth0 rx 64; do echo -n .; done and 'ping -f' toward the sh_eth port from another machine. To fix this: - Add a software flag (irq_enabled) to signal whether interrupts should be enabled - In the interrupt handler, if the flag is clear then clear EESIPR and return - In the NAPI poller, if the flag is clear then don't set EESIPR - Set the flag before enabling interrupts in sh_eth_dev_init() and sh_eth_set_ringparam() - Clear the flag and serialise with the interrupt and NAPI handlers before clearing EESIPR in sh_eth_close() and sh_eth_set_ringparam() After this, I could run the loop for 100,000 iterations successfully. When creating a bpf classifier in tc with priority collisions and invoking automatic unique handle assignment, cls_bpf_grab_new_handle() will return a wrong handle id which in fact is non-unique. Usually altering of specific filters is being addressed over major id, but in case of collisions we result in a filter chain, where handle ids address individual cls_bpf_progs inside the classifier. Issue is, in cls_bpf_grab_new_handle() we probe for head->hgen handle in cls_bpf_get() and in case we found a free handle, we're supposed to use exactly head->hgen. In case of insufficient numbers of handles, we bail out later as handle id 0 is not allowed. 2015-01-26net: cls_bpf: fix size mismatch on filter preparationDaniel Borkmann1-0/+5
In cls_bpf_modify_existing(), we read out the number of filter blocks, do some sanity checks, allocate a block on that size, and copy over the BPF instruction blob from user space, then pass everything through the classic BPF checker prior to installation of the classifier. We should reject mismatches here, there are 2 scenarios: the number of filter blocks could be smaller than the provided instruction blob, so we do a partial copy of the BPF program, and thus the instructions will either be rejected from the verifier or a valid BPF program will be run; in the other case, we'll end up copying more than we're supposed to, and most likely the trailing garbage will be rejected by the verifier as well (i.e. we need to fit instruction pattern, ret {A,K} needs to be last instruction, load/stores must be correct, etc); in case not, we would leak memory when dumping back instruction patterns. The code should have only used nla_len() as Dave noted to avoid this from the beginning. Anyway, lets fix it by rejecting such load attempts. 2015-01-26mm: page_alloc: embed OOM killing naturally into allocation slowpathJohannes Weiner2-52/+35
The OOM killing invocation does a lot of duplicative checks against the task's allocation context. Rework it to take advantage of the existing checks in the allocator slowpath. The OOM killer is invoked when the allocator is unable to reclaim any pages but the allocation has to keep looping. Instead of having a check for __GFP_NORETRY hidden in oom_gfp_allowed(), just move the OOM invocation to the true branch of should_alloc_retry(). The __GFP_FS check from oom_gfp_allowed() can then be moved into the OOM avoidance branch in __alloc_pages_may_oom(), along with the PF_DUMPCORE test. __alloc_pages_may_oom() can then signal to the caller whether the OOM killer was invoked, instead of requiring it to duplicate the order and high_zoneidx checks to guess this when deciding whether to continue. Commit 315786ebbf4a ("iommu: Add iommu_map_sg() function") adds a new ->map_sg() callback and provides a default implementation that drivers can use until they implement a hardware-specific variant. Unfortunately the Tegra GART driver was not updated as part of that commit, so that iommu_map_sg() calls on a domain provided by the GART cause an oops. The driver currently doesn't work as expected and causes existing setups with Tegra20 to break after commit df06b759f2cf ("drm/tegra: Add IOMMU support"). To restore these setups, do not register the operations with the platform bus for now. 2015-01-26drm/i915: Only fence tiled region of object.Bob Paauwe1-0/+7
When creating a fence for a tiled object, only fence the area that makes up the actual tiles. The object may be larger than the tiled area and if we allow those extra addresses to be fenced, they'll get converted to addresses beyond where the object is mapped. This opens up the possiblity of writes beyond the end of object. To prevent this, we adjust the size of the fence to only encompass the area that makes up the actual tiles. The extra space is considered un-tiled and now behaves as if it was a linear object. If a suspended was entered with the screen off some machines would resume with the screen at minimum brightness and others at maximum brightness. The following commands can be used to produce this behavior. xset dpms force off sleep 1 sudo systemctl suspend (resume ...) The root cause of this problem is a comparison which checks to see if the backlight level is zero when the panel is enabled. If it is zero, it is set to the maximum level. Unfortunately, not all machines have a minimum level of zero. On those machines the level is left at the minimum instead of begin set to the maximum. Fix the bug by updating the comparison to check for the minimum backlight level instead of zero. Also, expand the comparison for the possible case when the level is less than the minimum. I have no idea and theory whatsoever why this would upset the gpu less than the other way round. But it seems to work. David promised to chase hw people a bit more to get a more meaningful answer. Wrt the comment that this deletes: I've done some digging and afaict loading context before ppgtt enable was once required before our recent restructuring of the context/ppgtt init code: Before that context sw setup (i.e. allocating the default context) and hw setup was smashed together. Also the setup of the default context was the bit that actually allocated the aliasing ppgtt structures. Which is the reason for the context before ppgtt depency. Or was, since with all the untangling there's no no real depency any more (functional, who knows what the hw is doing), so the comment is just stale. The device driver has plenty of command buffers available per channel for channel command communication. In the extremely rare case when there is no command buffer available, return a NULL pointer and issue a warning in the kernel log. The caller handles the case when a NULL pointer is encountered and returns an error. In the case the wait for command buffer is possible (because no lock is held as in the OSN case), still wait until a channel command buffer is available. When registering a mdio bus, Linux assumes than every port has a PHY and tries to scan it. If a switch port has no PHY registered, DSA will fail to register the slave MII bus. To fix this, set the slave MII bus PHY mask to the switch PHYs mask. As an example, if we use a Marvell MV88E6352 (which is a 7-port switch with no registered PHYs for port 5 and port 6), with the following declared names: static struct dsa_chip_data switch_cdata = { [...] .port_names[0] = "sw0", .port_names[1] = "sw1", .port_names[2] = "sw2", .port_names[3] = "sw3", .port_names[4] = "sw4", .port_names[5] = "cpu", }; DSA will fail to create the switch instance. The already-present quirk for 04E6:000B has USB_SC_SCSI/USB_PR_BULK, not USB_SC_DEVICE/USB_PR_DEVICE. Change the 04E6:000F quirk to match that, since it will probably be required. This patch solves deadlock between clock prepare mutex and regmap mutex reported by Tomasz Figa in [1] by implementing solution from [2]: "always leave the clock of the i2c controller in a prepared state". [1] https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/7/2/171 [2] https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/7/2/207 On each i2c transfer handled by s3c24xx_i2c_xfer(), clk_prepare_enable() was called, which calls clk_prepare() then clk_enable(). clk_prepare() takes prepare_lock mutex before proceeding. Note that i2c transfer functions are invoked from many places in kernel, typically with some other additional lock held. It may happen that function on CPU1 (e.g. regmap_update_bits()) has taken a mutex (i.e. regmap lock mutex) then it attempts i2c communication in order to proceed (so it needs to obtain clock related prepare_lock mutex during transfer preparation stage due to clk_prepare() call). At the same time other task on CPU0 wants to operate on clock (e.g. to (un)prepare clock for some other reason) so it has taken prepare_lock mutex. CPU0: CPU1: clk_disable_unused() regulator_disable() clk_prepare_lock() map->lock(map->lock_arg) regmap_read() s3c24xx_i2c_xfer() map->lock(map->lock_arg) clk_prepare_lock() Implemented solution from [2] leaves i2c clock prepared. Preparation is done in s3c24xx_i2c_probe() function. Without this patch, it is immediately unprepared by clk_disable_unprepare() call. I've replaced this call with clk_disable() and I've added clk_unprepare() call in s3c24xx_i2c_remove(). The s3c24xx_i2c_xfer() function now uses clk_enable() instead of clk_prepare_enable() (and clk_disable() instead of clk_unprepare_disable()). 2015-01-23dm cache: fix problematic dual use of a single migration count variableJoe Thornber1-39/+50
Introduce a new variable to count the number of allocated migration structures. The existing variable cache->nr_migrations became overloaded. It was used to: i) track of the number of migrations in flight for the purposes of quiescing during suspend. ii) to estimate the amount of background IO occuring. Recent discard changes meant that REQ_DISCARD bios are processed with a migration. Discards are not background IO so nr_migrations was not incremented. However this could cause quiescing to complete early. (i) is now handled with a new variable cache->nr_allocated_migrations. cache->nr_migrations has been renamed cache->nr_io_migrations. cleanup_migration() is now called free_io_migration(), since it decrements that variable. Also, remove the unused cache->next_migration variable that got replaced with with prealloc_structs a while ago. If a DM table is reloaded with an inactive table when the device is not suspended (normal procedure for LVM2), then there will be two dm-bufio objects that can diverge. This can lead to a situation where the inactive table uses bufio to read metadata at the same time the active table writes metadata -- resulting in the inactive table having stale metadata buffers once it is promoted to the active table slot. Fix this by using reference counting and a global list of cache metadata objects to ensure there is only one metadata object per metadata device. In case userspace attempts to obtain key information for or delete a unicast key, this is currently erroneously rejected unless the driver sets the WIPHY_FLAG_IBSS_RSN flag. Apparently enough drivers do so it was never noticed. Fix that, and while at it fix a potential memory leak: the error path in the get_key() function was placed after allocating a message but didn't free it - move it to a better place. Luckily admin permissions are needed to call this operation. 2015-01-23mac80211: only roll back station states for WDS when suspendingLuciano Coelho1-14/+15
In normal cases (i.e. when we are fully associated), cfg80211 takes care of removing all the stations before calling suspend in mac80211. But in the corner case when we suspend during authentication or association, mac80211 needs to roll back the station states. But we shouldn't roll back the station states in the suspend function, because this is taken care of in other parts of the code, except for WDS interfaces. For AP types of interfaces, cfg80211 takes care of disconnecting all stations before calling the driver's suspend code. For station interfaces, this is done in the quiesce code. For WDS interfaces we still need to do it here, so move the code into a new switch case for WDS. 2015-01-23x86/apic: Re-enable PCI_MSI support for non-SMP X86_32Bryan O'Donoghue1-1/+5
Commit 0dbc6078c06bc0 ('x86, build, pci: Fix PCI_MSI build on !SMP') introduced the dependency that X86_UP_APIC is only available when PCI_MSI is false. This effectively prevents PCI_MSI support on 32bit UP systems because it disables both APIC and IO-APIC. But APIC support is architecturally required for PCI_MSI. The intention of the patch was to enforce APIC support when PCI_MSI is enabled, but failed to do so. Remove the !PCI_MSI dependency from X86_UP_APIC and enforce X86_UP_APIC when PCI_MSI support is enabled on 32bit UP systems. The Witcher 2 did something like this to allocate a TLS segment index: struct user_desc u_info; bzero(&u_info, sizeof(u_info)); u_info.entry_number = (uint32_t)-1; syscall(SYS_set_thread_area, &u_info); Strictly speaking, this code was never correct. It should have set read_exec_only and seg_not_present to 1 to indicate that it wanted to find a free slot without putting anything there, or it should have put something sensible in the TLS slot if it wanted to allocate a TLS entry for real. The actual effect of this code was to allocate a bogus segment that could be used to exploit espfix. The set_thread_area hardening patches changed the behavior, causing set_thread_area to return -EINVAL and crashing the game. This changes set_thread_area to interpret this as a request to find a free slot and to leave it empty, which isn't *quite* what the game expects but should be close enough to keep it working. In particular, using the code above to allocate two segments will allocate the same segment both times. According to FrostbittenKing on Github, this fixes The Witcher 2. If this somehow still causes problems, we could instead allocate a limit==0 32-bit data segment, but that seems rather ugly to me. 2015-01-22x86, mpx: Fix potential performance issue on unmapsDave Hansen1-1/+19
The 3.19 merge window saw some TLB modifications merged which caused a performance regression. They were fixed in commit 045bbb9fa. Once that fix was applied, I also noticed that there was a small but intermittent regression still present. It was not present consistently enough to bisect reliably, but I'm fairly confident that it came from (my own) MPX patches. The source was reading a relatively unused field in the mm_struct via arch_unmap. I also noted that this code was in the main instruction flow of do_munmap() and probably had more icache impact than we want. This patch does two things: 1. Adds a static (via Kconfig) and dynamic (via cpuid) check for MPX with cpu_feature_enabled(). This keeps us from reading that cacheline in the mm and trades it for a check of the global CPUID variables at least on CPUs without MPX. 2. Adds an unlikely() to ensure that the MPX call ends up out of the main instruction flow in do_munmap(). I've added a detailed comment about why this was done and why we want it even on systems where MPX is present.
