The snd-aloop loopback driver does not modify or access the actual samples
in any way, defines no volume or mute controls, it's strictly bitperfect.
Therefore DSD formats can be supported without any modification.

receive_buf() is called from ttyport_receive_buf() that expects values
">= 0" from serdev_controller_receive_buf(), change its return type from
ssize_t to size_t.
The need for this clean-up was noticed while fixing a warning, see
commit 94d053942544 ("Bluetooth: btnxpuart: fix recv_buf() return value").
Changing the callback prototype to return an unsigned seems the best way
to document the API and ensure that is properly used.
GNSS drivers implementation of serdev receive_buf() callback return
directly the return value of gnss_insert_raw(). gnss_insert_raw()
returns a signed int, however this is not an issue since the value
returned is always positive, because of the kfifo_in() implementation.
gnss_insert_raw() could be changed to return also an unsigned, however
this is not implemented here as request by the GNSS maintainer Johan
Hovold.

There's a use case that playback stream of a loopback cable works on
RW_INTERLEAVED mode while capture stream works on MMAP_INTERLEAVED mode:
aplay -Dhw:Loopback,0,0 S32_48K_2ch.wav;
arecord -Dplughw:Loopback,1,0 -fS32_LE -r16000 -c2 cap.wav;
The plug plugin handles only slave PCM support MMAP mode. Not only plug
plugin but also other plugins like direct plugins(dmix/dsnoop/dshare)
work on MMAP access mode. In this case capture stream is the slave
PCM works on MMAP_INTERLEAVED mode. However loopback_check_format()
rejects this access setting and return:
arecord: pcm_read:2240: read error: Input/output error
To fix it a function called is_access_interleaved() is introduced to
get if access is interleaved mode. If both access of capture stream and
playback stream is interleaved mode loopback_check_format() will allow
this kind of access setting.

The current version of the loopback driver supports interleaved access
mode only. This patch introduces support for the non-interleaved
access mode.
When in the interleaved mode, the 'copy_play_buf' function copies data
from the playback to the capture buffer using one memcpy call. This call
copies samples for multiple, interleaved channels.
In the non-interleaved mode we have multiple channel buffers, so we have
to perform multiple memcpy calls to copy samples channel after channel.
Add new function called 'copy_play_buf_part_n', which copies a part of
each channel buffer from playback to capture. Modify the 'copy_play_buf'
to use the corresponding memory copy function(just memcpy /
copy_play_buf_part_n) depending on the access mode.

The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate
of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus.
As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they
"temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h
and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include
files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and
replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to
explicitly include the correct includes.

The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes
many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by
returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart
from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks.
To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return
void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to
.remove_new() which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers
are converted, .remove_new() is renamed to .remove().
Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove
callback to the void returning variant.

We have a lot of different virtual media drivers, which can be used for
testing of the userspace applications and media subsystem middle layer.
However, all of them are aimed at testing the video functionality and
simulating the video devices. For audio devices we have only snd-dummy
module, which is good in simulating the correct behavior of an ALSA device.
I decided to write a tool, which would help to test the userspace ALSA
programs (and the PCM middle layer as well) under unusual circumstances
to figure out how they would behave. So I came up with this Virtual PCM
Test Driver.
This new Virtual PCM Test Driver has several features which can be useful
during the userspace ALSA applications testing/fuzzing, or testing/fuzzing
of the PCM middle layer. Not all of them can be implemented using the
existing virtual drivers (like dummy or loopback). Here is what can this
driver do:
- Simulate both capture and playback processes
- Generate random or pattern-based capture data
- Inject delays into the playback and capturing processes
- Inject errors during the PCM callbacks
Also, this driver can check the playback stream for containing the
predefined pattern, which is used in the corresponding selftest to check
the PCM middle layer data transferring functionality. Additionally, this
driver redefines the default RESET ioctl, and the selftest covers this PCM
API functionality as well.
The driver supports both interleaved and non-interleaved access modes, and
have separate pattern buffers for each channel. The driver supports up to
4 channels and up to 8 substreams.

The bulk of the commits here are for the conversion of drivers to use
void remove callbacks but there's a reasonable amount of other stuff
going on, the pace of development with the SOF code continues to be high
and there's a bunch of new drivers too:
- More core cleanups from Morimto-san.
- Update drivers to have remove() callbacks returning void, mostly
mechanical with some substantial changes.
- Continued feature and simplification work on SOF, including addition
of a no-DSP mode for bringup, HDA MLink and extensions to the IPC4
protocol.
- Hibernation support for CS35L45.
- More DT binding conversions.
- Support for Cirrus Logic CS35L56, Freescale QMC, Maxim MAX98363,

I got a null-ptr-defer error report when I do the following tests
on the qemu platform:
make defconfig and CONFIG_PARPORT=m, CONFIG_PARPORT_PC=m,

Then making test scripts:
cat>test_mod1.sh<<EOF

Executing the script, perhaps several times, we will get a null-ptr-defer

timer, and it's superfluous for the probe error handling. Moreover,
calling this via the previous devres change would lead to another
problem due to the reverse call order.

The hrtimer callback pcsp_do_timer() prepares rearming of the timer with
hrtimer_forward(). hrtimer_forward() is intended to provide a mechanism to
forward the expiry time of the hrtimer by a multiple of the period argument
so that the expiry time greater than the time provided in the 'now'
argument.
pcsp_do_timer() invokes hrtimer_forward() with the current timer expiry
time as 'now' argument. That's providing a periodic timer expiry, but is
not really robust when the timer callback is delayed so that the resulting
new expiry time is already in the past which causes the callback to be
invoked immediately again. If the timer is delayed then the back to back
invocation is not really making it better than skipping the missed
periods. Sound is distorted in any case.
Use hrtimer_forward_now() which ensures that the next expiry is in the
future. This prevents hogging the CPU in the timer expiry code and allows
later on to remove hrtimer_forward() from the public interfaces.

This should give no user-visible functional changes.
Note that this converts only the mpu401 card driver. The mpu401_uart

the mpu401_uart component may be removed dynamically without the

ALSA: control - add generic LED API
This patchset tries to resolve the diversity in the audio LED
control among the ALSA drivers. A new control layer registration
is introduced which allows to run additional operations on
top of the elementary ALSA sound controls.
A new control access group (three bits in the access flags)
was introduced to carry the LED group information for
the sound controls. The low-level sound drivers can just
mark those controls using this access group. This information
is not exported to the user space, but user space can
manage the LED sound control associations through sysfs
(last patch) per Mark's request. It makes things fully
configurable in the kernel and user space (UCM).
The actual state ('route') evaluation is really easy
(the minimal value check for all channels / controls / cards).
If there's more complicated logic for a given hardware,
the card driver may eventually export a new read-only
sound control for the LED group and do the logic itself.
The new LED trigger control code is completely separated
and possibly optional (there's no symbol dependency).
The full code separation allows eventually to move this
LED trigger control to the user space in future.
Actually it replaces the already present functionality
in the kernel space (HDA drivers) and allows a quick adoption
for the recent hardware (ASoC codecs including SoundWire).
snd_ctl_led 24576 0
The sound driver implementation is really easy:
1) call snd_ctl_led_request() when control LED layer should be
automatically activated
/ it calls module_request("snd-ctl-led") on demand /
2) mark all related kcontrols with
SNDRV_CTL_ELEM_ACCESS_SPK_LED or
SNDRV_CTL_ELEM_ACCESS_MIC_LED

The tasklet is an old API that should be deprecated, usually can be

git://git.kernel.org:/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/playground into for-next
ALSA: Fix year 2038 issue for sound subsystem
This is a series I worked on with Baolin in 2017 and 2018, but we
never quite managed to finish up the last pieces. During the
ALSA developer meetup at ELC-E 2018 in Edinburgh, a decision was
made to go with this approach for keeping best compatibility
with existing source code, and then I failed to follow up by
resending the patches.
Now I have patches for all remaining time_t uses in the kernel,
so it's absolutely time to revisit them. I have done more
review of the patches myself and found a couple of minor issues
that I have fixed up, otherwise the series is still the same as
before.
Conceptually, the idea of these patches is:
- 64-bit applications should see no changes at all, neither
compile-time nor run-time.
- 32-bit code compiled with a 64-bit time_t currently
does not work with ALSA, and requires kernel changes and/or
sound/asound.h changes
- Most 32-bit code using these interfaces will work correctly
on a modified kernel, with or without the uapi header changes.
- 32-bit code using SNDRV_TIMER_IOCTL_TREAD requires the
updated header file for 64-bit time_t support
- 32-bit i386 user space with 64-bit time_t is broken for
SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_STATUS, SNDRV_RAWMIDI_IOCTL_STATUS and
SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_SYNC_PTR because of i386 alignment. This is also
addressed by the updated uapi header.
- PCM mmap is currently supported on native x86 kernels
(both 32-bit and 64-bit) but not for compat mode. This series breaks
the 32-bit native mmap support for 32-bit time_t, but instead allows
it for 64-bit time_t on both native and compat kernels. This seems to
be the best trade-off, as mmap support is optional already, and most
32-bit code runs in compat mode anyway.
- I've tried to avoid breaking compilation of 32-bit code
as much as possible. Anything that does break however is likely code
that is already broken on 64-bit time_t and needs source changes to
fix them.

Static analysis tools (cppcheck and PVS Studio) report an error
in loopback_snd_timer_period_elapsed() regarding dpcm_play pointer
dereference earlier than its null-check. And although this is a result
of a formal check, and the pointer correctness is also protected
by having a corresponding bit set in the "running" mask, re-ordering
of the lines can imake the code even formally correct and eliminate
those static analysis error reports.

loopback_snd_timer_close_cable() function waits until all

loopback_parse_timer_id() uses snd_card_ref(), that can lock on mutex,
also snd_timer_instance_new() uses non-atomic allocation, that can sleep.
So, both functions can not be called from loopback_snd_timer_open()
with cable->lock spinlock locked.
Moreover, most part of loopback_snd_timer_open() function body works
when the opposite stream of the same cable does not yet exist, and
the current stream is not yet completely open and can't be running,
so existing locking of loopback->cable_lock mutex is enough to protect
from conflicts with simultaneous opening or closing.
Locking of cable->lock spinlock is not needed in this case.

Show and change sound card timer source with read-write info
file in proc filesystem. Initial string can still be set as
module parameter.
The timer source string value can be changed at any time,
but it is latched by PCM substream open callback (the first one
for a particular cable). At this point it is actually used, that
is the string is parsed, and the timer is looked up and opened.
The timer source is set for a loopback card (the same as initial
setting by module parameter), but every cable uses the value,
current at the moment of open.
Setting the value to empty string switches the timer to jiffies.

to do synchronous audio forwarding between hardware sound card and aloop
devices. Such an audio route could look like the following:
Sound card -> Loopback application -> ALSA loop device -> arecord
In this case the loopback device should use the sound timer of the sound
card. Without this patch the loopback application has to implement an
adaptive sample rate converter to align the different clocks of the
different ALSA devices.
The used timer can be selected by referring to a sound card, its device
and subdevice, when loading the module:
$ modprobe snd_aloop enable=1 timer_source=[<card>[.<dev>[.<subdev>]]]
<card> is the name (id) of the sound card or a card number.
<dev> and <subdev> are device and subdevice numbers (defaults are 0).
Empty string as a value of timer_source= parameter enables previous
functionality (using jiffies timer).

In loopback_open() and loopback_close(), we assign and release the
substream object to the corresponding cable in a racy way. It's
neither locked nor done in the right position. The open callback
assigns the substream before its preparation finishes, hence the other
side of the cable may pick it up, which may lead to the invalid memory
access.
This patch addresses these: move the assignment to the end of the open
callback, and wrap with cable->lock for avoiding concurrent accesses.

The aloop driver tries to stop the pending timer via timer_del() in
the trigger callback and in the close callback. The former is
correct, as it's an atomic operation, while the latter expects that
the timer gets really removed and proceeds the resource releases after
that. But timer_del() doesn't synchronize, hence the running timer
may still access the released resources.
A similar situation can be also seen in the prepare callback after
trigger(STOP) where the prepare tries to re-initialize the things
while a timer is still running.
The problems like the above are seen indirectly in some syzkaller
reports (although it's not 100% clear whether this is the only cause,
as the race condition is quite narrow and not always easy to
trigger).
For addressing these issues, this patch adds the explicit alls of
timer_del_sync() in some places, so that the pending timer is properly
killed / synced.

The aloop driver tries to update the hw constraints of the connected
target on the cable of the opened PCM substream. This is done by
adding the extra hw constraints rules referring to the substream
runtime->hw fields, while the other substream may update the runtime
hw of another side on the fly.
This is, however, racy and may result in the inconsistent values when
both PCM streams perform the prepare concurrently. One of the reason
is that it overwrites the other's runtime->hw field; which is not only
racy but also broken when it's called before the open of another side
finishes. And, since the reference to runtime->hw isn't protected,
the concurrent write may give the partial value update and become
inconsistent.
This patch is an attempt to fix and clean up:
- The prepare doesn't change the runtime->hw of other side any longer,
but only update the cable->hw that is referred commonly.
- The extra rules refer to the loopback_pcm object instead of the
runtime->hw. The actual hw is deduced from cable->hw.
- The extra rules take the cable_lock to protect against the race.

The extra hw constraint rule for the formats the aloop driver
introduced has a slight flaw, where it doesn't return a positive value
when the mask got changed. It came from the fact that it's basically
a copy&paste from snd_hw_constraint_mask64(). The original code is
supposed to be a single-shot and it modifies the mask bits only once
and never after, while what we need for aloop is the dynamic hw rule
that limits the mask bits.
This difference results in the inconsistent state, as the hw_refine
doesn't apply the dependencies fully. The worse and surprisingly
result is that it causes a crash in OSS emulation when multiple
full-duplex reads/writes are performed concurrently (I leave why it
triggers Oops to readers as a homework).
For fixing this, replace a few open-codes with the standard
snd_mask_*() macros.

ASoC: Updates for v4.15
The biggest thing this release has been the conversion of the AC98 bus
to the driver model, that's been a long time coming so thanks to Robert
Jarzmik for his dedication there. Due to there being some AC97 MFD
there's a few fairly large changes in input and the MFD layer, mainly to
the wm97xx driver.
There's also some drivers/drm changes to support the new AMD Stoney
platform, these are shared with the DRM subsystem and should be being
merged via both.
Within the subsystem the overwhelming bulk of the changes is in the
Intel drivers which continue to need lots of cleanups and fixes, this
release they've also gained support for their open source firmware.
There's also some large changs in the core as Morimoto-san continues to
mirror operations into the component level in preparation for conversion
of drivers to that.
- The AC97 bus has finally caught up with the driver model thanks to
some dedicated and persistent work from Robert Jarzmik.
- Continued work from Morimoto-san on moving us towards being able to
use components for everything.
- Lots of cleanups for the Intel platform code, including support for
their open source audio firmware.
- Support for scaling MCLK with sample rate in simple-card.
- Support for AMD Stoney platform.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 11139
and resulted in the first patch in this series.
If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930
and resulted in the second patch in this series.
- if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1
and that resulted in the third patch in this series.
- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

In the commit 3d774d5ef066 ("ALSA: seq: Allow the tristate build of
OSS emulation") we changed CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS to tristate, but a
couple of places were forgotten, namely, opl3 and emux Makefile.
These contain the line like
snd-opl3-synth-$(CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS) += opl3_oss.o
and this doesn't work any longer as expected because snd-opl3-synth
can be built-in while CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS=m.
This patch fixes these places to build properly for the new kconfig
dependency. In the end, we had to use ifneq() to satisfy the
requirement. It's a bit ugly, but lesser evil.

Many drivers bind the sequencer stuff in off-load by another driver
module, so that it's loaded only on demand. In the current code, this
mechanism doesn't work when the driver is built-in while the sequencer
is module. We check with IS_REACHABLE() and enable only when the
sequencer is in the same level of build.
However, this is basically a overshoot. The binder code
(snd-seq-device) is an individual module from the sequencer core
(snd-seq), and we just have to make the former a built-in while
keeping the latter a module for allowing the scenario like the above.
This patch achieves that by rewriting Kconfig slightly. Now, a driver
that provides the manual sequencer device binding should select
CONFIG_SND_SEQ_DEVICE in a way as
select SND_SEQ_DEVICE if SND_SEQUENCER != n
Note that the "!=n" is needed here to avoid the influence of the
sequencer core is module while the driver is built-in.
Also, since rawmidi.o may be linked with snd_seq_device.o when
built-in, we have to shuffle the code to make the linker happy.
(the kernel linker isn't smart enough yet to handle such a case.)
That is, snd_seq_device.c is moved to sound/core from sound/core/seq,
as well as Makefile.
Last but not least, the patch replaces the code using IS_REACHABLE()
with IS_ENABLED(), since now the condition meets always when enabled.

This is a slightly intensive rewrite of Kconfig and Makefile about
ALSA sequencer stuff.
The first major change is that the kconfig items for the sequencer are
moved to sound/core/seq/Kconfig. OK, that's easy.
The substantial change is that, instead of hackish top-level module
selection in Makefile, we define a Kconfig item for each sequencer
module. The driver that requires such sequencer components select
exclusively the kconfig items. This is more straightforward and
standard way.

Currently OSS sequencer emulation is tied with ALSA sequencer core,
both are built in the same level; i.e. when CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=y,
the OSS sequencer emulation is also always built-in, even though the
functionality can be built as an individual module.
This patch changes the rule and allows users to build snd-seq-oss
module while others are built-in. Essentially, it's just a few simple
changes in Kconfig and Makefile. Some driver codes like opl3 need to
convert from the simple ifdef to IS_ENABLED(). But that's all.
You might wonder how about the dependency: right, it can be messy, but
it still works. Since we rewrote the sequencer binding with the
standard bus, the driver can be bound at any time on demand. So, the
synthesizer driver module can be loaded individually from the OSS
emulation core before/after it.

Pull hw lockdown support from David Howells:
"Annotation of module parameters that configure hardware resources
including ioports, iomem addresses, irq lines and dma channels.
This allows a future patch to prohibit the use of such module
parameters to prevent that hardware from being abused to gain access
to the running kernel image as part of locking the kernel down under
UEFI secure boot conditions.
Annotations are made by changing:
module_param(n, t, p)
module_param_named(n, v, t, p)
module_param_array(n, t, m, p)
to:
module_param_hw(n, t, hwtype, p)
module_param_hw_named(n, v, t, hwtype, p)
module_param_hw_array(n, t, hwtype, m, p)
where the module parameter refers to a hardware setting
hwtype specifies the type of the resource being configured. This can
be one of:
ioport Module parameter configures an I/O port
iomem Module parameter configures an I/O mem address
ioport_or_iomem Module parameter could be either (runtime set)
irq Module parameter configures an I/O port
dma Module parameter configures a DMA channel
dma_addr Module parameter configures a DMA buffer address
other Module parameter configures some other value
Note that the hwtype is compile checked, but not currently stored (the
lockdown code probably won't require it). It is, however, there for
future use.
A bonus is that the hwtype can also be used for grepping.
The intention is for the kernel to ignore or reject attempts to set
annotated module parameters if lockdown is enabled. This applies to
options passed on the boot command line, passed to insmod/modprobe or
direct twiddling in /sys/module/ parameter files.
The module initialisation then needs to handle the parameter not being
set, by (1) giving an error, (2) probing for a value or (3) using a
reasonable default.
What I can't do is just reject a module out of hand because it may
take a hardware setting in the module parameters. Some important
modules, some ipmi stuff for instance, both probe for hardware and
allow hardware to be manually specified; if the driver is aborts with
any error, you don't get any ipmi hardware.
Further, trying to do this entirely in the module initialisation code
doesn't protect against sysfs twiddling.
[!] Note that in and of itself, this series of patches should have no
effect on the the size of the kernel or code execution - that is
left to a patch in the next series to effect. It does mark

When the kernel is running in secure boot mode, we lock down the kernel to
prevent userspace from modifying the running kernel image. Whilst this
includes prohibiting access to things like /dev/mem, it must also prevent
access by means of configuring driver modules in such a way as to cause a
device to access or modify the kernel image.
To this end, annotate module_param* statements that refer to hardware
configuration and indicate for future reference what type of parameter they
specify. The parameter parser in the core sees this information and can
skip such parameters with an error message if the kernel is locked down.
The module initialisation then runs as normal, but just sees whatever the
default values for those parameters is.
Note that we do still need to do the module initialisation because some
drivers have viable defaults set in case parameters aren't specified and
some drivers support automatic configuration (e.g. PNP or PCI) in addition
to manually coded parameters.
This patch annotates drivers in sound/drivers/.

The update of stream costs significantly, and we should avoid it
unless the stream really has started. Check pipe->running flag

The pseudo DMA transfer codes in VX222 and VX-pocket driver have a
slight bug where they check the buffer boundary wrongly, and may
overflow. Also, the zero sample count might be handled badly for the
playback (although it shouldn't happen in theory). This patch
addresses these issues.

ktime_set(S,N) was required for the timespec storage type and is still
useful for situations where a Seconds and Nanoseconds part of a time value
needs to be converted. For anything where the Seconds argument is 0, this
is pointless and can be replaced with a simple assignment.

A workaround is to call hrtimer_cancel() in dummy_hrtimer_sync() which
is called certainly before other blocking ops.
