Yes, yes, I know the slab people were planning on going slow and letting every subsystem fight this thing on their own. But let's just rip off the band-aid and get it over and done with. I don't want to see a number of unnecessary pull requests just to get rid of a flag that no longer has any meaning. This was mainly done with a couple of 'sed' scripts and then some manual cleanup of the end result. 2024-02-22fat: fix uninitialized field in nostale filehandlesJan Kara1-0/+6
When fat_encode_fh_nostale() encodes file handle without a parent it stores only first 10 bytes of the file handle. However the length of the file handle must be a multiple of 4 so the file handle is actually 12 bytes long and the last two bytes remain uninitialized. This is not great at we potentially leak uninitialized information with the handle to userspace. Properly initialize the full handle length. Rename the default helper for encoding FILEID_INO32_GEN* file handles to generic_encode_ino32_fh() and convert the filesystems that used the default implementation to use the generic helper explicitly. After this change, exportfs_encode_inode_fh() no longer has a default implementation to encode FILEID_INO32_GEN* file handles. This is a step towards allowing filesystems to encode non-decodeable file handles for fanotify without having to implement any export_operations. 2023-08-11fat: remove i_version handling from fat_update_timeJeff Layton1-3/+0
commit 6bb885ecd746 (fat: add functions to update and truncate timestamps appropriately") added an update_time routine for fat. That patch added a section for handling the S_VERSION bit, even though FAT doesn't enable SB_I_VERSION and the S_VERSION bit will never be set when calling it. Remove the section for handling S_VERSION since it's effectively dead code, and will be problematic vs. future changes. 2023-08-09fs: pass the request_mask to generic_fillattrJeff Layton1-1/+1
generic_fillattr just fills in the entire stat struct indiscriminately today, copying data from the inode. There is at least one attribute (STATX_CHANGE_COOKIE) that can have side effects when it is reported, and we're looking at adding more with the addition of multigrain timestamps. Add a request_mask argument to generic_fillattr and have most callers just pass in the value that is passed to getattr. Have other callers (e.g. ksmbd) just pass in STATX_BASIC_STATS. Also move the setting of STATX_CHANGE_COOKIE into generic_fillattr. Add a new config option that controls building the buffer_head code, and select it from all file systems and stacking drivers that need it. For the block device nodes and alternative iomap based buffered I/O path is provided when buffer_head support is not enabled, and iomap needs a a small tweak to define the IOMAP_F_BUFFER_HEAD flag to 0 to not call into the buffer_head code when it doesn't exist. Otherwise this is just Kconfig and ifdef changes. Convert to struct mnt_idmap. Last cycle we merged the necessary infrastructure in 256c8aed2b42 ("fs: introduce dedicated idmap type for mounts"). This is just the conversion to struct mnt_idmap. Currently we still pass around the plain namespace that was attached to a mount. This is in general pretty convenient but it makes it easy to conflate namespaces that are relevant on the filesystem with namespaces that are relevent on the mount level. Especially for non-vfs developers without detailed knowledge in this area this can be a potential source for bugs. Once the conversion to struct mnt_idmap is done all helpers down to the really low-level helpers will take a struct mnt_idmap argument instead of two namespace arguments. This way it becomes impossible to conflate the two eliminating the possibility of any bugs. All of the vfs and all filesystems only operate on struct mnt_idmap. 2022-08-17Change calling conventions for filldir_tAl Viro1-4/+4
filldir_t instances (directory iterators callbacks) used to return 0 for "OK, keep going" or -E... for "stop". Note that it's *NOT* how the error values are reported - the rules for those are callback-dependent and ->iterate{,_shared}() instances only care about zero vs. non-zero (look at emit_dir() and friends). So let's just return bool ("should we keep going?") - it's less confusing that way. The choice between "true means keep going" and "true means stop" is bikesheddable; we have two groups of callbacks - do something for everything in directory, until we run into problem and find an entry in directory and do something to it. The former tended to use 0/-E... conventions - -E<something> on failure. The latter tended to use 0/1, 1 being "stop, we are done". The callers treated anything non-zero as "stop", ignoring which non-zero value did they get. "true means stop" would be more natural for the second group; "true means keep going" - for the first one. I tried both variants and the things like if allocation failed something = -ENOMEM; return true; just looked unnatural and asking for trouble. This ports the attribute changes codepaths to rely on the new better helpers using a dedicated type. Before this change we used to take a shortcut and place the actual values that would be written to inode->i_{g,u}id into struct iattr. This had the advantage that we moved idmappings mostly out of the picture early on but it made reasoning about changes more difficult than it should be. The filesystem was never explicitly told that it dealt with an idmapped mount. The transition to the value that needed to be stored in inode->i_{g,u}id appeared way too early and increased the probability of bugs in various codepaths. We know place the same value in struct iattr no matter if this is an idmapped mount or not. The vfs will only deal with type safe vfs{g,u}id_t. This makes it massively safer to perform permission checks as the type will tell us what checks we need to perform and what helpers we need to use. Fileystems raising FS_ALLOW_IDMAP can't simply write ia_vfs{g,u}id to inode->i_{g,u}id since they are different types. Instead they need to use the dedicated vfs{g,u}id_to_k{g,u}id() helpers that map the vfs{g,u}id into the filesystem. The other nice effect is that filesystems like overlayfs don't need to care about idmappings explicitly anymore and can simply set up struct iattr accordingly directly. The renameat2 RENAME_EXCHANGE flag allows to atomically exchange two paths but is currently not supported by the Linux vfat filesystem driver. Add a vfat_rename_exchange() helper function that implements this support. The super block lock is acquired during the operation to ensure atomicity, and in the error path actions made are reversed also with the mutex held. It makes the operation as transactional as possible, within the limitation impossed by vfat due not having a journal with logs to replay. Patch series "fat: add support for the renameat2 RENAME_EXCHANGE flag", v6. The series adds support for the renameat2 system call RENAME_EXCHANGE flag (which allows to atomically replace two paths) to the vfat filesystem code. There are many use cases for this, but we are particularly interested in making possible for vfat filesystems to be part of OSTree [0] deployments. Currently OSTree relies on symbolic links to make the deployment updates an atomic transactional operation. But RENAME_EXCHANGE could be used [1] to achieve a similar level of robustness when using a vfat filesystem. Patch #1 is just a preparatory patch to introduce the RENAME_EXCHANGE support, patch #2 moves some code blocks in vfat_rename() to a set of helper functions, that can be reused by tvfat_rename_exchange() that's added by patch #3 and finally patch #4 adds some kselftests to test it. This patch (of 4): Currently vfat only supports the RENAME_NOREPLACE flag which is handled by the virtual file system layer but doesn't support the RENAME_EXCHANGE flag. FAT supports creation time but not change time, and there was no corresponding timestamp for creation time in previous VFS. The original implementation took the compromise of saving the in-memory change time into the on-disk creation time field, but this would lead to compatibility issues with non-linux systems. To address this issue, this patch changes the behavior of ctime. It will no longer be loaded and stored from the creation time on disk. Instead of that, it'll be consistent with the in-memory mtime and share the same on-disk field. All updates to mtime will also be applied to ctime in memory, while all updates to ctime will be ignored. In order for end users to quickly react to new issues that come up in production, it is proving useful to leverage the printk indexing system. This printk index enables kernel developers to use calls to printk() with changeable ad-hoc format strings (as they always have; no change of expectations), while enabling end users to examine format strings to detect changes. Since end users are using regular expressions to match messages printed through printk(), being able to detect changes in chosen format strings from release to release provides a useful signal to review printk()-matching regular expressions for any necessary updates. So that detailed FAT messages are captured by this printk index, this patch wraps fat_msg with a macro. Here are just a few: - Idmapped mounts make it possible to easily share files between multiple users or multiple machines especially in complex scenarios. For example, idmapped mounts will be used in the implementation of portable home directories in systemd-homed.service(8) where they allow users to move their home directory to an external storage device and use it on multiple computers where they are assigned different uids and gids. This effectively makes it possible to assign random uids and gids at login time. - It is possible to share files from the host with unprivileged containers without having to change ownership permanently through chown(2). - It is possible to idmap a container's rootfs and without having to mangle every file. For example, Chromebooks use it to share the user's Download folder with their unprivileged containers in their Linux subsystem. - It is possible to share files between containers with non-overlapping idmappings. - Filesystem that lack a proper concept of ownership such as fat can use idmapped mounts to implement discretionary access (DAC) permission checking. - They allow users to efficiently changing ownership on a per-mount basis without having to (recursively) chown(2) all files. In contrast to chown (2) changing ownership of large sets of files is instantenous with idmapped mounts. This is especially useful when ownership of a whole root filesystem of a virtual machine or container is changed. With idmapped mounts a single syscall mount_setattr syscall will be sufficient to change the ownership of all files. - Idmapped mounts always take the current ownership into account as idmappings specify what a given uid or gid is supposed to be mapped to. This contrasts with the chown(2) syscall which cannot by itself take the current ownership of the files it changes into account. It simply changes the ownership to the specified uid and gid. This is especially problematic when recursively chown(2)ing a large set of files which is commong with the aforementioned portable home directory and container and vm scenario. - Idmapped mounts allow to change ownership locally, restricting it to specific mounts, and temporarily as the ownership changes only apply as long as the mount exists. It already helped to discover an unrelated xfs setgid inheritance bug which has since been fixed in mainline. It will be sent for inclusion with the xfstests project should you decide to merge this. In order to support per-mount idmappings vfsmounts are marked with user namespaces. The idmapping of the user namespace will be used to map the ids of vfs objects when they are accessed through that mount. By default all vfsmounts are marked with the initial user namespace. The initial user namespace is used to indicate that a mount is not idmapped. All operations behave as before and this is verified in the testsuite. Based on prior discussions we want to attach the whole user namespace and not just a dedicated idmapping struct. This allows us to reuse all the helpers that already exist for dealing with idmappings instead of introducing a whole new range of helpers. In addition, if we decide in the future that we are confident enough to enable unprivileged users to setup idmapped mounts the permission checking can take into account whether the caller is privileged in the user namespace the mount is currently marked with. The user namespace the mount will be marked with can be specified by passing a file descriptor refering to the user namespace as an argument to the new mount_setattr() syscall together with the new MOUNT_ATTR_IDMAP flag. The system call follows the openat2() pattern of extensibility. The following conditions must be met in order to create an idmapped mount: - The caller must currently have the CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability in the user namespace the underlying filesystem has been mounted in. - The underlying filesystem must support idmapped mounts. - The mount must not already be idmapped. This also implies that the idmapping of a mount cannot be altered once it has been idmapped. - The mount must be a detached/anonymous mount, i.e. it must have been created by calling open_tree() with the OPEN_TREE_CLONE flag and it must not already have been visible in the filesystem. The last two points guarantee easier semantics for userspace and the kernel and make the implementation significantly simpler. By default vfsmounts are marked with the initial user namespace and no behavioral or performance changes are observed. The patches to convert individual filesystem are not very large or complicated overall as can be seen from the included fat, ext4, and xfs ports. Patches for other filesystems are actively worked on and will be sent out separately. The xfstestsuite can be used to verify that port has been done correctly. The mount_setattr() syscall is motivated independent of the idmapped mounts patches and it's been around since July 2019. One of the most valuable features of the new mount api is the ability to perform mounts based on file descriptors only. Together with the lookup restrictions available in the openat2() RESOLVE_* flag namespace which we added in v5.6 this is the first time we are close to hardened and race-free (e.g. symlinks) mounting and path resolution. While userspace has started porting to the new mount api to mount proper filesystems and create new bind-mounts it is currently not possible to change mount options of an already existing bind mount in the new mount api since the mount_setattr() syscall is missing. With the addition of the mount_setattr() syscall we remove this last restriction and userspace can now fully port to the new mount api, covering every use-case the old mount api could. We also add the crucial ability to recursively change mount options for a whole mount tree, both removing and adding mount options at the same time. This syscall has been requested multiple times by various people and projects. There is a simple tool available at https://github.com/brauner/mount-idmapped that allows to create idmapped mounts so people can play with this patch series. Extend some inode methods with an additional user namespace argument. A filesystem that is aware of idmapped mounts will receive the user namespace the mount has been marked with. This can be used for additional permission checking and also to enable filesystems to translate between uids and gids if they need to. We have implemented all relevant helpers in earlier patches. As requested we simply extend the exisiting inode method instead of introducing new ones. This is a little more code churn but it's mostly mechanical and doesnt't leave us with additional inode methods. timespec64_trunc() is being deleted. timestamp_truncate() is the replacement api for timespec64_trunc. timestamp_truncate() additionally clamps timestamps to make sure the timestamps lie within the permitted range for the filesystem. But, fat always truncates the times locally after it obtains the timestamps from current_time(). Implement a local version here along the lines of existing truncate functions. MAX_FAT is useless in msdos_fs.h, since it uses the MSDOS_SB function that is defined in fat.h. So really, this macro can be only called from code that already includes fat.h. Hence, this patch moves it to fat.h, right after MSDOS_SB is defined. I also changed it to an inline function in order to save the double call to MSDOS_SB. This was suggested by joe@perches.com in the previous version. 2019-01-03Remove 'type' argument from access_ok() functionLinus Torvalds1-2/+2
Nobody has actually used the type (VERIFY_READ vs VERIFY_WRITE) argument of the user address range verification function since we got rid of the old racy i386-only code to walk page tables by hand. It existed because the original 80386 would not honor the write protect bit when in kernel mode, so you had to do COW by hand before doing any user access. But we haven't supported that in a long time, and these days the 'type' argument is a purely historical artifact. A discussion about extending 'user_access_begin()' to do the range checking resulted this patch, because there is no way we're going to move the old VERIFY_xyz interface to that model. And it's best done at the end of the merge window when I've done most of my merges, so let's just get this done once and for all. This patch was mostly done with a sed-script, with manual fix-ups for the cases that weren't of the trivial 'access_ok(VERIFY_xyz' form. There were a couple of notable cases: - csky still had the old "verify_area()" name as an alias. - the iter_iov code had magical hardcoded knowledge of the actual values of VERIFY_{READ,WRITE} (not that they mattered, since nothing really used it) - microblaze used the type argument for a debug printout but other than those oddities this should be a total no-op patch. I tried to fix up all architectures, did fairly extensive grepping for access_ok() uses, and the changes are trivial, but I may have missed something. Patch series "fat: timestamp updates", v5. fat/msdos timestamps are stored on-disk with several different granularities, some of them lower resolution than timespec64_trunc() can provide. In addition, they are only truncated as they are written to disk, so the timestamps in-memory for new or modified files/directories may be different from the same timestamps after a remount, as the now-truncated times are re-read from the on-disk format. These patches allow finer granularity for the timestamps where possible and add fat-specific ->update_time inode operation and fat_truncate_time functions to truncate each timestamp correctly, giving consistent times across remounts. Now that we pass down 64-bit timestamps from VFS, we just need to convert that correctly into on-disk timestamps. To make that work correctly, this changes the last use of time_to_tm() in the kernel to time64_to_tm(), which also lets use remove that deprecated interfaces. Similarly, the time_t use in fat_time_fat2unix() truncates the timestamp on the way in, which can be avoided by using types that are wide enough to hold the intermediate values during the conversion. The kmalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kmalloc_array(). This patch replaces cases of: kmalloc(a * b, gfp) with: kmalloc_array(a * b, gfp) as well as handling cases of: kmalloc(a * b * c, gfp) with: kmalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp) as it's slightly less ugly than: kmalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp) This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like: kmalloc(4 * 1024, gfp) though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion. struct timespec is not y2038 safe. Transition vfs to use y2038 safe struct timespec64 instead. The change was made with the help of the following cocinelle script. This catches about 80% of the changes. All the header file and logic changes are included in the first 5 rules. The rest are trivial substitutions. I avoid changing any of the function signatures or any other filesystem specific data structures to keep the patch simple for review. The script can be a little shorter by combining different cases. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman3-0/+3
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2017-03-02statx: Add a system call to make enhanced file info availableDavid Howells2-4/+5
Add a system call to make extended file information available, including file creation and some attribute flags where available through the underlying filesystem. The getattr inode operation is altered to take two additional arguments: a u32 request_mask and an unsigned int flags that indicate the synchronisation mode. This change is propagated to the vfs_getattr*() function. Functions like vfs_stat() are now inline wrappers around new functions vfs_statx() and vfs_statx_fd() to reduce stack usage. ======== OVERVIEW ======== The idea was initially proposed as a set of xattrs that could be retrieved with getxattr(), but the general preference proved to be for a new syscall with an extended stat structure. A number of requests were gathered for features to be included. The following have been included: (1) Make the fields a consistent size on all arches and make them large. (2) Spare space, request flags and information flags are provided for future expansion. (3) Better support for the y2038 problem [Arnd Bergmann] (tv_sec is an __s64). (4) Creation time: The SMB protocol carries the creation time, which could be exported by Samba, which will in turn help CIFS make use of FS-Cache as that can be used for coherency data (stx_btime). This is also specified in NFSv4 as a recommended attribute and could be exported by NFSD [Steve French]. (5) Lightweight stat: Ask for just those details of interest, and allow a netfs (such as NFS) to approximate anything not of interest, possibly without going to the server [Trond Myklebust, Ulrich Drepper, Andreas Dilger] (AT_STATX_DONT_SYNC). (6) Heavyweight stat: Force a netfs to go to the server, even if it thinks its cached attributes are up to date [Trond Myklebust] (AT_STATX_FORCE_SYNC). And the following have been left out for future extension: (7) Data version number: Could be used by userspace NFS servers [Aneesh Kumar]. Can also be used to modify fill_post_wcc() in NFSD which retrieves i_version directly, but has just called vfs_getattr(). It could get it from the kstat struct if it used vfs_xgetattr() instead. (There's disagreement on the exact semantics of a single field, since not all filesystems do this the same way). (8) BSD stat compatibility: Including more fields from the BSD stat such as creation time (st_btime) and inode generation number (st_gen) [Jeremy Allison, Bernd Schubert]. (9) Inode generation number: Useful for FUSE and userspace NFS servers [Bernd Schubert]. (This was asked for but later deemed unnecessary with the open-by-handle capability available and caused disagreement as to whether it's a security hole or not). (10) Extra coherency data may be useful in making backups [Andreas Dilger]. (No particular data were offered, but things like last backup timestamp, the data version number and the DOS archive bit would come into this category). (11) Allow the filesystem to indicate what it can/cannot provide: A filesystem can now say it doesn't support a standard stat feature if that isn't available, so if, for instance, inode numbers or UIDs don't exist or are fabricated locally... (This requires a separate system call - I have an fsinfo() call idea for this). (12) Store a 16-byte volume ID in the superblock that can be returned in struct xstat [Steve French]. (Deferred to fsinfo). (13) Include granularity fields in the time data to indicate the granularity of each of the times (NFSv4 time_delta) [Steve French]. (Deferred to fsinfo). (14) FS_IOC_GETFLAGS value. These could be translated to BSD's st_flags. Note that the Linux IOC flags are a mess and filesystems such as Ext4 define flags that aren't in linux/fs.h, so translation in the kernel may be a necessity (or, possibly, we provide the filesystem type too). (Some attributes are made available in stx_attributes, but the general feeling was that the IOC flags were to ext[234]-specific and shouldn't be exposed through statx this way). (15) Mask of features available on file (eg: ACLs, seclabel) [Brad Boyer, Michael Kerrisk]. (Deferred, probably to fsinfo. Finding out if there's an ACL or seclabal might require extra filesystem operations). (16) Femtosecond-resolution timestamps [Dave Chinner]. (A __reserved field has been left in the statx_timestamp struct for this - if there proves to be a need). There is no equivalent of lstat() as that can be emulated with statx() by passing AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW in flags. There is also no equivalent of fstat() as that can be emulated by passing a NULL filename to statx() with the fd of interest in dfd. Whether or not statx() synchronises the attributes with the backing store can be controlled by OR'ing a value into the flags argument (this typically only affects network filesystems): (1) AT_STATX_SYNC_AS_STAT tells statx() to behave as stat() does in this respect. (2) AT_STATX_FORCE_SYNC will require a network filesystem to synchronise its attributes with the server - which might require data writeback to occur to get the timestamps correct. (3) AT_STATX_DONT_SYNC will suppress synchronisation with the server in a network filesystem. The resulting values should be considered approximate. mask is a bitmask indicating the fields in struct statx that are of interest to the caller. The user should set this to STATX_BASIC_STATS to get the basic set returned by stat(). It should be noted that asking for more information may entail extra I/O operations. buffer points to the destination for the data. Fields in struct statx come in a number of classes: (0) stx_dev_*, stx_blksize. These are local system information and are always available. (1) stx_mode, stx_nlinks, stx_uid, stx_gid, stx_[amc]time, stx_ino, stx_size, stx_blocks. These will be returned whether the caller asks for them or not. The corresponding bits in stx_mask will be set to indicate whether they actually have valid values. If the caller didn't ask for them, then they may be approximated. For example, NFS won't waste any time updating them from the server, unless as a byproduct of updating something requested. If the values don't actually exist for the underlying object (such as UID or GID on a DOS file), then the bit won't be set in the stx_mask, even if the caller asked for the value. In such a case, the returned value will be a fabrication. Note that there are instances where the type might not be valid, for instance Windows reparse points. (2) stx_rdev_*. This will be set only if stx_mode indicates we're looking at a blockdev or a chardev, otherwise will be 0. (3) stx_btime. We always mixed in the parent pointer into the dentry name hash, but we did it late at lookup time. It turns out that we can simplify that lookup-time action by salting the hash with the parent pointer early instead of late. A few other users of our string hashes also wanted to mix in their own pointers into the hash, and those are updated to use the same mechanism. Hash users that don't have any particular initial salt can just use the NULL pointer as a no-salt. FAT has long supported its own default file name encoding config setting, separate from CONFIG_NLS_DEFAULT. However, if UTF-8 encoded file names are desired FAT character set should not be set to utf8 since this would make file names case sensitive even if case insensitive matching is requested. Instead, "utf8" mount options should be provided to enable UTF-8 file names in FAT file system. Unfortunately, there was no possibility to set the default value of this option so on UTF-8 system "utf8" mount option had to be added manually to most FAT mounts. Implement preallocation via the fallocate syscall on VFAT partitions. This patch is based on an earlier patch of the same name which had some issues detailed below and did not get accepted. Refer https://lkml.org/lkml/2007/12/22/130. a) The preallocated space was not persistent when the FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE flag was set. It will deallocate cluster at evict time. b) There was no need to zero out the clusters when the flag was set Instead of doing an expanding truncate, just allocate clusters and add them to the fat chain. This reduces preallocation time. Compatibility with windows: There are no issues when FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE is not set because it just does an expanding truncate. Thus reading from the preallocated area on windows returns null until data is written to it. When a file with preallocated area using the FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE was written to on windows, the windows driver freed-up the preallocated clusters and allocated new clusters for the new data. The freed up clusters gets reflected in the free space available for the partition which can be seen from the Volume properties. The windows chkdsk tool also does not report any errors on a disk containing files with preallocated space. And there is also no issue using linux fat fsck. because discard preallocated clusters at repair time. For the root directory, . and .. are faked (using dir_emit_dots()) and ctx->pos is reset from 2 to 0. A corrupted root directory could cause fat_get_entry() to fail, but ->iterate() (fat_readdir()) reports progress to the VFS (with ctx->pos rewound to 0), so any following calls to ->iterate() continue to return the same entries again and again. The result is that userspace will never see the end of the directory, causing e.g. 'ls' to hang in a getdents() loop. With the planned cgroup writeback support, backing-dev related declarations will be more widely used across block and cgroup; unfortunately, including backing-dev.h from include/linux/blkdev.h makes cyclic include dependency quite likely. This patch separates out backing-dev-defs.h which only has the essential definitions and updates blkdev.h to include it. c files which need access to more backing-dev details now include backing-dev.h directly. When running FSX with direct I/O mode, fsx resulted in DATA past EOF issues. fsx ./file2 -Z -r 4096 -w 4096 ... .. truncating to largest ever: 0x907c fallocating to largest ever: 0x11137 truncating to largest ever: 0x2c6fe truncating to largest ever: 0x2cfdf fallocating to largest ever: 0x40000 Mapped Read: non-zero data past EOF (0x18628) page offset 0x629 is 0x2a4e ... .. The reason being, it is doing a truncate down, but the zeroing does not happen on the last block boundary when offset is not aligned. Even though it calls truncate_setsize()->truncate_inode_pages()-> truncate_inode_pages_range() and considers the partial zeroout but it retrieves the page using find_lock_page() - which only looks the page in the cache. So, zeroing out does not happen in case of direct IO. Make a truncate page based around block_truncate_page for FAT filesystem and invoke that helper to zerout in case the offset is not aligned with the blocksize. Add structure for parsed BPB information, struct fat_bios_param_block, and move all of the deserialization and validation logic from fat_fill_super() into fat_read_bpb(). Add a 'dos1xfloppy' mount option to infer DOS 2.x BIOS Parameter Block defaults from block device geometry for ancient floppies and floppy images, as a fall-back from the default BPB parsing logic. When fat_read_bpb() finds an invalid FAT filesystem and dos1xfloppy is set, fall back to fat_read_static_bpb(). fat_read_static_bpb() validates that the entire BPB is zero, and that the floppy has a DOS-style 8086 code bootstrapping header.
