ASoC: Updates for v6.10
This is a very big update, in large part due to extensive work the Intel
people have been doing in their drivers though it's also been busy
elsewhere. There's also a big overhaul of the DAPM documentation from
Luca Ceresoli arising from the work he did putting together his recent
ELC talk, and he also contributed a new tool for visualising the DAPM
state.
- A new tool dapm-graph for visualising the DAPM state.
- Substantial fixes and clarifications for the DAPM documentation.
- Very large updates throughout the Intel audio drivers.
- Cleanups of accessors for driver data, module labelling, and for
constification.
- Modernsation and cleanup work in the Mediatek drivers.
- Several fixes and features for the DaVinci I2S driver.
- New drivers for several AMD and Intel platforms, Nuvoton NAU8325,
Rockchip RK3308 and Texas Instruments PCM6240.

Improve wording in a few places, cleanup ReST colon syntax, remove space

snd_soc_dapm_new_widgets() (there should be no parameters in the docs, and
that function takes a card, not a codec).

in driver specific ways rather than due to anything subsystem wide.
Highlights include:
- Standardisation of API prefixes on snd_soc_, removing asoc_.
- GPIO API usage improvements.
- Support for HDA patches.
- Lots of work on SOF, including crash dump support.
- Support for AMD platforms with es83xx, Awinc AT87390, many Intel
platforms, many Mediatek platforms, Qualcomm SM6115, Richtek RTQ9128

For gapless playback it is possible that each track can have different
codec profile with same decoder, for example we have WMA album,
we may have different tracks as WMA v9, WMA v10 and so on
Or if DSP's like QDSP have abililty to switch decoders on single stream
for each track, then this call could be used to set new codec parameters.
Existing code does not allow to change this profile while doing gapless
playback.
Reuse existing SNDRV_COMPRESS_SET_PARAMS to set this new track params along
some additional checks to enforce proper state machine.
With this new changes now the user can call SNDRV_COMPRESS_SET_PARAMS
anytime after setting next track and additional check in write should
also ensure that params are set before writing new data.

As the updated MIDI 2.0 spec has been published freshly, this is a
catch up to add the support for new specs, especially UMP v1.1
features, on Linux kernel.
The new UMP v1.1 introduced the concept of Function Blocks (FB), which
is a kind of superset of USB MIDI 2.0 Group Terminal Blocks (GTB).
The patch set adds the support for FB as the primary information
source while keeping the parse of GTB as fallback. Also UMP v1.1
supports the groupless messages, the protocol switch, static FBs, and
other new fundamental features, and those are supported as well.

Add documentation for the new Virtual PCM Test Driver. It covers all
possible usage cases: errors and delay injections, random and
pattern-based data generation, playback and ioctl redefinition
functionalities testing.
We have a lot of different virtual media drivers, which can be used for
testing of the userspace applications and media subsystem middle layer.
However, all of them are aimed at testing the video functionality and
simulating the video devices. For audio devices we have only snd-dummy
module, which is good in simulating the correct behavior of an ALSA device.
I decided to write a tool, which would help to test the userspace ALSA
programs (and the PCM middle layer as well) under unusual circumstances
to figure out how they would behave. So I came up with this Virtual PCM
Test Driver.
This new Virtual PCM Test Driver has several features which can be useful
during the userspace ALSA applications testing/fuzzing, or testing/fuzzing
of the PCM middle layer. Not all of them can be implemented using the
existing virtual drivers (like dummy or loopback). Here is what can this
driver do:
- Simulate both capture and playback processes
- Check the playback stream for containing the looped pattern
- Generate random or pattern-based capture data
- Inject delays into the playback and capturing processes
- Inject errors during the PCM callbacks
Also, this driver can check the playback stream for containing the
predefined pattern, which is used in the corresponding selftest to check
the PCM middle layer data transferring functionality. Additionally, this
driver redefines the default RESET ioctl, and the selftest covers this PCM
API functionality as well.
The driver supports both interleaved and non-interleaved access modes, and
have separate pattern buffers for each channel. The driver supports up to
4 channels and up to 8 substreams.

This is a (largish) patch set for adding the support of MIDI 2.0
functionality, mainly targeted for USB devices. MIDI 2.0 is a
complete overhaul of the 40-years old MIDI 1.0. Unlike MIDI 1.0 byte
stream, MIDI 2.0 uses packets in 32bit words for Universal MIDI Packet
(UMP) protocol. It supports both MIDI 1.0 commands for compatibility
and the extended MIDI 2.0 commands for higher resolutions and more
functions.
For supporting the UMP, the patch set extends the existing ALSA
rawmidi and sequencer interfaces, and adds the USB MIDI 2.0 support to
the standard USB-audio driver.
The rawmidi for UMP has a different device name (/dev/snd/umpC*D*) and
it reads/writes UMP packet data in 32bit CPU-native endianness. For
the old MIDI 1.0 applications, the legacy rawmidi interface is
provided, too.
As default, USB-audio driver will take the alternate setting for MIDI
2.0 interface, and the compatibility with MIDI 1.0 is provided via the
rawmidi common layer. However, user may let the driver falling back
to the old MIDI 1.0 interface by a module option, too.
A UMP-capable rawmidi device can create the corresponding ALSA
sequencer client(s) to support the UMP Endpoint and UMP Group
connections. As a nature of ALSA sequencer, arbitrary connections
between clients/ports are allowed, and the ALSA sequencer core
performs the automatic conversions for the connections between a new
UMP sequencer client and a legacy MIDI 1.0 sequencer client. It
allows the existing application to use MIDI 2.0 devices without
changes.
The MIDI-CI, which is another major extension in MIDI 2.0, isn't
covered by this patch set. It would be implemented rather in
user-space.
Roughly speaking, the first half of this patch set is for extending
the rawmidi and USB-audio, and the second half is for extending the
ALSA sequencer interface.
The patch set is based on 6.4-rc2 kernel, but all patches can be
cleanly applicable on 6.2 and 6.3 kernels, too (while 6.1 and older
kernels would need minor adjustment for uapi header changes).
The updates for alsa-lib and alsa-utils will follow shortly later.
The author thanks members of MIDI Association OS/API Working Group,
especially Andrew Mee, for great helps for the initial design and
debugging / testing the drivers.

The mixer structures were filled in two places: on driver init, and when
the devices are opened. The latter made the former pointless, so we
remove the former. This implies that mixer dumps may now return all
zeroes, which is OK, as restoring them is meaningless as well.
Things were even weirder for the (generally unused) secondary sends:
Some of the initialization loops were forgotten when support for Audigy
was added, thus creating the technically illegal state of multiple sends
being routed to the same FX accumulator (though it apparently doesn't
matter when the amount is zero).
The global multi-channel init used some rather bizarre values for the
secondary sends, and the init on open actually forgot to re-initialize
them. We now use a not really more useful, but simpler formula.
The direct register init was also bogus. This doesn't really matter, as
the value is overwritten when a voice comes into use, but still.

The voice volume is a raw fractional multiplier that can't actually
represent 1.0. To still enable real pass-through, we now set the volume
to 0.5 (which results in no loss of precision, as the FX bus provides
fractional values) and scale up the samples in DSP code.
To maintain backwards compatibility with existing configuration files,
we rescale the values in the mixer controls. The range is extended
upwards from 0xffff to 0x1fffd, which actually introduces the
possibility of specifying an amplification.
There is still a minor incompatibility with user space, namely if
someone loaded custom DSP code. They'll just get half the volume, so
this doesn't seem like a big deal.

Common ALSA module parameters look a little bit confusing because of the
description lacking, and it took me a while to understand the purpose of
their existence. To figure it out I asked the question about them to the
"alsa-devel" mailing list, and Takashi Iwai answered me with the text I

These common module parameters aren't used a lot nowadays, but as I

existing user-space apps. So in my opinion it is a good idea to document

The auto-silencer supports two modes: "thresholded" to fill up "just
enough", and "top-up" to fill up "as much as possible". The two modes
used rather distinct code paths, which this patch unifies. The only
remaining distinction is how much we actually want to fill.
This fixes a bug in thresholded mode, where we failed to use new_hw_ptr,
resulting in under-fill.
Top-up mode is now more well-behaved and much easier to understand in
corner cases.
This also updates comments in the proximity of silencing-related data

The canonical location for the tracefs filesystem is at /sys/kernel/tracing.
But, from Documentation/trace/ftrace.rst:
Before 4.1, all ftrace tracing control files were within the debugfs
file system, which is typically located at /sys/kernel/debug/tracing.
For backward compatibility, when mounting the debugfs file system,
the tracefs file system will be automatically mounted at:
/sys/kernel/debug/tracing
Many parts of Documentation still reference this older debugfs path, so
let's update them to avoid confusion.

Fix two mistakes in the PCM interface section:
1/ Members of the snd_pcm_hardware structure are channels_{min,max}
and not channel_{min,max} (mind the 's').
2/ Another sentence is incomplete as the reference to one structure
member (period_bytes_max) is missing.
There is no relevant 'Fixes:' tag to apply as both typos predate the

The doc currently mentions that the IEC958 Playback Default should be
exposed on the PCM iface, and the Playback Mask on the mixer iface.
It's a bit confusing to advise to have two related controls on two
separate ifaces, and it looks like the drivers that currently expose
those controls use any combination of the mixer and PCM ifaces.
Let's try to clarify the situation a bit, and encourage to at least have
the controls on the same iface.

This change adds audio jack injection feature through debugfs, with
this feature, we could validate alsa userspace changes by injecting
plugin or plugout events to the non-phantom audio jacks.
With this change, the sound core will build the folders
$debugfs_mount_dir/sound/cardN if SND_DEBUG and DEBUG_FS are enabled.
And if users also enable the SND_JACK_INJECTION_DEBUG, the jack
injection nodes will be built in the folder cardN like below:
$tree $debugfs_mount_dir/sound
$debugfs_mount_dir/sound

├── sw_inject_enable
└── type
The nodes kctl_id, mask_bits, status and type are read-only, users
could check jack or jack_kctl's information through them.
The nodes sw_inject_enable and jackin_inject are directly used for
injection. The sw_inject_enable is read-write, users could check if
software injection is enabled or not on this jack, and users could
echo 1 or 0 to enable or disable software injection on this jack. Once
the injection is enabled, the jack will not change by hardware events
anymore, once the injection is disabled, the jack will restore the
last reported hardware events to the jack. The jackin_inject is
write-only, if the injection is enabled, users could echo 1 or 0 to
this node to inject plugin or plugout events to this jack.
For the detailed usage information on these nodes, please refer to
Documentation/sound/designs/jack-injection.rst.

During the process of converting the documentation to reST, some links
were converted using the following wrong syntax (and sometimes using %20
instead of spaces):
`Display text <#section-name-in-html>`__
This syntax isn't valid according to the docutils' spec [1], but more
importantly, it is specific to HTML, since it uses '#' to link to an
HTML anchor.
The right syntax would instead use a docutils hyperlink reference as the
embedded URI to point to the section [2], that is:
`Display text <Section Name_>`__
This syntax works in both HTML and PDF.
The LaTeX toolchain doesn't mind the HTML anchor syntax when generating
the pdf documentation (make pdfdocs), that is, the build succeeds but
the links don't work, but that syntax causes errors when trying to build
using the not-yet-merged rst2pdf:
ValueError: format not resolved, probably missing URL scheme or undefined destination target for 'Forcing%20Quiescent%20States'
So, use the correct syntax in order to have it work in all different
output formats.

ASoC: Updates for v5.9
The biggest changes here one again come from Mormioto-san who has
continued his dilligent work cleaning up long standing issues in the
APIs, it's particularly nice to see the transition from digital_mute()
to mute_stream() finally completed. There's also been a lot of work on
the x86 code again, this time a big focus has been on cleaning up some
issues identified by various static tests, and on the Freescale systems.
Otherwise the biggest thing has been a lot of driver additions:
- Convert users of digital_mute() to mute_stream().
- Simplify I/O helper functions.
- Add a helper for getting the RTD from a substream.
- Many, many fixes and cleanups to the x86 code.
- New drivers for Freescale MQS and i.MX6sx, Intel KeemBay I2S, Maxim
MAX98360A and MAX98373 Soundwire, several Mediatek boards, nVidia
Tegra 186 and 210, RealTek RL6231, Samsung Midas and Aries boards (some
of the first phones I worked on!) and TI J721e EVM.

patch_realtek.c has historically failed to properly configure the PC
Beep Hidden Register for the ALC256 codec (among others). Depending on
your kernel version, symptoms of this misconfiguration can range from
chassis noise, picked up by a poorly-shielded PCBEEP trace, getting
amplified and played on your internal speaker and/or headphones to loud
feedback, which responds to the "Headphone Mic Boost" ALSA control,
getting played through your headphones. For details of the problem, see
the patch in this series titled "ALSA: hda/realtek - Set principled PC
Beep configuration for ALC256", which fixes the configuration.
These symptoms have been most noticed on the Dell XPS 13 9350 and 9360,
popular laptops that use the ALC256. As a result, several model-specific
fixups have been introduced to try and fix the problem, the most
egregious of which locks the "Headphone Mic Boost" control as a hack to
minimize noise from a feedback loop that shouldn't have been there in
the first place.
Now that the underlying issue has been fixed, remove all these fixups.
Remaining fixups needed by the XPS 13 are all picked up by existing pin
quirks.
This change should, for the XPS 13 9350/9360
- Significantly increase volume and audio quality on headphones
- Eliminate headphone popping on suspend/resume
- Allow "Headphone Mic Boost" to be set again, making the headphone
jack fully usable as a microphone jack too.

This codec (among others) has a hidden set of audio routes, apparently
designed to allow PC Beep output without a mixer widget on the output
path, which are controlled by an undocumented Realtek vendor register.
The default configuration of these routes means that certain inputs
aren't accessible, necessitating driver control of the register.
However, Realtek has provided no documentation of the register, instead
opting to fix issues by providing magic numbers, most of which have been
at least somewhat erroneous. These magic numbers then get copied by
others into model-specific fixups, leading to a fragmented and buggy set
of configurations.
To get out of this situation, I've reverse engineered the register by
flipping bits and observing how the codec's behavior changes. This
commit documents my findings. It does not change any code.

Following the example in cb2cf0de1174 ("ASoC: soc-core: care Codec <->
Codec case by non_legacy_dai_naming"), determine if a DAI link contains
only codec DAIs by examining the non_legacy_dai_naming flag in each
DAI's component.
For now, we assume there is only one or a small set of valid PCM stream
parameters, so num_params == 1 is good enough. We also assume that the
same params are valid for all supported streams. params is set to the
subset of parameters common among all DAIs, and then the existing code
automatically chooses the highest quality of the remaining values when
the link is brought up.

Pull sound updates from Takashi Iwai:
"As the diffstat shows we've had again a lot of works done for this
cycle: the majority of changes are the continued componentization and
code refactoring in ASoC, the tree-wide PCM API updates and cleanups
and SOF updates while a few ASoC driver updates are seen, too.
Here we go, some highlights:
Core:
- Finally y2038 support landed to ALSA ABI; some ioctls have been
extended and lots of tricks were applied
- Applying the new managed PCM buffer API to all drivers; the API
itself was already merged in 5.5
- The already deprecated dimension support in ALSA control API is
dropped completely now
- Verification of ALSA control elements to catch API misuses
ASoC:
- Further code refactorings and moving things to the component level
- Lots of updates and improvements on SOF / Intel drivers; now
including common HDMI driver and SoundWire support
- New driver support for Ingenic JZ4770, Mediatek MT6660, Qualcomm
WCD934x and WSA881x, and Realtek RT700, RT711, RT715, RT1011,
RT1015 and RT1308
HD-audio:
- Improved ring-buffer communications using waitqueue
- Drop the superfluous buffer preallocation on x86
Others:
- Many code cleanups, mostly constifications over the whole tree
- USB-audio: quirks for MOTU, Corsair Virtuoso, Line6 Helix
- FireWire: code refactoring for oxfw and dice drivers"

Patrick May reported that his sound card with CMI8378 chip causes a
crash / reboot when accessing the MIDI port that isn't actually
present on the board. Moreover, despite of the documentation,
passing mpu_port=0 doesn't disable the MIDI port on this board.
It implies that the chip is a newer revision and the MPU401 port is
integrated and mapped on the PCI register. For this chip model, the
driver enables the MPU port unconditionally, so far.
Although fixing the unexpected reboot would be the best solution, it's
not so trivial to identify the cause. So, as a plan B, this patch
extends the existing mpu_port option usage to allow disabling the port
by specifying the value 0, just like we applied for fm_port option in
commit 2f24d159d5ac ("[ALSA] cmipci - Allow to disable integrated FM
port"). As default, the MPU port is still enabled, but user can pass
mpu_port=0 to disable it.

Currently we pass the artificial device pointer to the allocation
helper in the case of SNDRV_DMA_TYPE_CONTINUOUS for passing the GFP
flags. But all common cases are the allocations with GFP_KERNEL, and
it's messy to put this in each place.
In this patch, the memalloc core helper is changed to accept the NULL
device pointer and it treats as the default mode, GFP_KERNEL, so that
all callers can omit the complex argument but just leave NULL.

The reversed engineered sequence represents a repeating pattern

written on indexes 0x23 and 0x25:
0x500, 0x23
0x400, VALUE1
0x500, 0x25
0x400, VALUE2
* skipped reading sequences (0x500 - 0xc00 sequences are ignored)
* static values from reverse engineering are used
NOTE: since a significant risk is still considered, this is provided
as an experimental fix that isn't applied as default for now. For

We used to pass NULL to memory allocators for ISA devices due to
historical reasons. But we prefer rather a proper device object to be
assigned, so let's fix it by replacing snd_dma_isa_data() call with
card->dev reference, and kill snd_dma_isa_data() definition.

Currently, USB-audio driver allocates the PCM buffer via vmalloc(), as
this serves merely as an intermediate buffer that is copied to each
URB transfer buffer. This works well in general on x86, but on some
archs this may result in cache coherency issues when mmap is used.
OTOH, it works also on such arch unless mmap is used.
This patch is a step for mitigating the inconvenience; a new module
option "use_vmalloc" is provided so that user can choose to allocate
the DMA coherent buffer instead of the existing vmalloc buffer.
The drawback is that it'd be the standard dma_alloc_coherent() calls
and the system would require contiguous pages on non-x86 archs.
Note that it's a global option and not dynamically switchable since
the buffer is pre-allocated at the probe time. In theory, it's
possible to be switchable, but it'd be trickier and racier.
As default use_vmalloc option is set to true, so that the old behavior
is kept. For allowing the coherent mmap on ARM or MIPS, pass
use_vmalloc=0 option explicitly.

Since no complaints have been raised after disabling the build of OSS
(Open Sound System) by the commit 31cbee6a5611 ("sound: Disable the
build of OSS drivers"), let's finally drop the whole code and
documentation.
Some glue codes are still left intact since sound/oss/dmasound stuff
remains -- which is an independent implementation solely for m68k, and
it's not covered by ALSA yet.
Also, a couple of API header files (linux/sound.h and
linux/soundcard.h) are kept remaining as well, since the OSS API
itself is still supported by ALSA OSS emulation, and applications can
refer to these.
Where we're at it, some help texts in the top-level Kconfig are
adjusted, too (who still needs to specify I/O port in kbuild
nowadays?).

A simple conversion from the text file.
Since this is the only document specific to the configurations, it's
put to the root sound subdirectory.
A section describing the obsoleted configure stuff of old alsa-driver
tarball got removed.

The original HD-Audio.txt was already in asciidoc format, so it's a
simple conversion in the end.
A new subdirectory, Documentation/sound/hd-audio, is created and the
document is moved there with another file name to match better with
the recent Documentation tree structure.

A simple conversion of alsa-driver-api document from DocBook to ReST.
It's moved to the new Documentation/sound/kernel-api subdirectory that
will contain other ALSA kernel API documents.
The GPL legal note was removed, as it's superfluous (and doesn't fit
with ReST kernel docs pretty well).

module names. Let's get rid of it for avoiding confusions.
