2012-10-01Get rid of Documentation/feature-removal.txtLinus Torvalds1-586/+0
This file has turned out to be a pure write-only file that causes merge conflicts and has no actual redeeming features. There is never any reason to add stuff to this idiotic file. Either something isn't getting used, and you should just remove it, or there is no excuse for removing it in the first place. Just stop the idiocy. It has also been the excuse for just plain bad behavior ("Hey, I don't like xyz, so let's mark it for removal" followed by "Hey, look, it been in feature-removal.txt for six months now, so we should remove it"). The recent bogus setitimer() ABI change request was just the most recent example of pointless and incorrect mental masturbation involving this file, and I'm tired of the silly and pointless conflicts in the file. This removal was discussed during the recent kernel summit, and while Steven Rostedt suggested we should just enter the file itself in the feature-removal schedule (to see if anybody who edits the file actually looks at it), that's cute but non-productive. Pull USB changes from Greg Kroah-Hartman: "Here is the big USB pull request for 3.7-rc1 There are lots of gadget driver changes (including copying a bunch of files into the drivers/staging/ccg/ directory so that the other gadget drivers can be fixed up properly without breaking that driver), and we remove the old obsolete ub.c driver from the tree. There are also the usual XHCI set of updates, and other various driver changes and updates. We also are trying hard to remove the old dbg() macro, but the final bits of that removal will be coming in through the networking tree before we can delete it for good. Pull ARM DMA engine updates from Russell King: "This looks scary at first glance, but what it is is: - a rework of the sa11x0 DMA engine driver merged during the previous cycle, to extract a common set of helper functions for DMA engine implementations. - conversion of amba-pl08x.c to use these helper functions. - addition of OMAP DMA engine driver (using these helper functions), and conversion of some of the OMAP DMA users to use DMA engine. Nothing in the helper functions is ARM specific, so I hope that other implementations can consolidate some of their code by making use of these helpers. This has been sitting in linux-next most of the merge cycle, and has been tested by several OMAP folk. I've tested it on sa11x0 platforms, and given it my best shot on my broken platforms which have the amba-pl08x controller. The last point is the addition to feature-removal-schedule.txt, which will have a merge conflict. Between myself and TI, we're planning to remove the old TI DMA implementation next year." 2012-03-30x86: Remove the ancient and deprecated disable_hlt() and enable_hlt() facilityLen Brown1-8/+0
The X86_32-only disable_hlt/enable_hlt mechanism was used by the 32-bit floppy driver. Its effect was to replace the use of the HLT instruction inside default_idle() with cpu_relax() - essentially it turned off the use of HLT. This workaround was commented in the code as: "disable hlt during certain critical i/o operations" "This halt magic was a workaround for ancient floppy DMA wreckage. It should be safe to remove." H. Peter Anvin additionally adds: "To the best of my knowledge, no-hlt only existed because of flaky power distributions on 386/486 systems which were sold to run DOS. Since DOS did no power management of any kind, including HLT, the power draw was fairly uniform; when exposed to the much hhigher noise levels you got when Linux used HLT caused some of these systems to fail. They were by far in the minority even back then." Alan Cox further says: "Also for the Cyrix 5510 which tended to go castors up if a HLT occurred during a DMA cycle and on a few other boxes HLT during DMA tended to go astray. Do we care ? I doubt it. The 5510 was pretty obscure, the 5520 fixed it, the 5530 is probably the oldest still in any kind of use." So, let's finally drop this. The badness() function in the oom killer was renamed to oom_badness() in a63d83f427fb ("oom: badness heuristic rewrite") since it is a globally exported function for clarity. As promised in feature-removal-schedule.txt it is time to remove the nfsctl system call. Userspace has perferred to not use this call throughout 2.6 and it has been excluded in the default configuration since 2.6.36 (9 months ago). So this patch removes all the code that was being compiled out. There are still references to sys_nfsctl in various arch systemcall tables and related code. 2011-05-29x86 idle: deprecate mwait_idle() and "idle=mwait" cmdline paramLen Brown1-0/+7
mwait_idle() is a C1-only idle loop intended to be more efficient than HLT on SMP hardware that supports it. But mwait_idle() has been replaced by the more general mwait_idle_with_hints(), which handles both C1 and deeper C-states. ACPI uses only mwait_idle_with_hints(), and never uses mwait_idle(). Deprecate mwait_idle() and the "idle=mwait" cmdline param to simplify the x86 idle code. After this change, kernels configured with (!CONFIG_ACPI=n && !CONFIG_INTEL_IDLE=n) when run on hardware that support MWAIT will simply use HLT. If MWAIT is desired on those systems, cpuidle and the cpuidle drivers above can be used. cc: x86@kernel.org cc: stable@kernel.org # .39.x Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>
2011-05-29x86 idle: deprecate "no-hlt" cmdline paramLen Brown1-0/+11
We'd rather that modern machines not check if HLT works on every entry into idle, for the benefit of machines that had marginal electricals 15-years ago. If those machines are still running the upstream kernel, they can use "idle=poll". The only difference will be that they'll now invoke HLT in machine_hlt(). cc: x86@kernel.org # .39.x Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>
2011-05-29x86 idle APM: deprecate CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLELen Brown1-0/+10
We don't want to export the pm_idle function pointer to modules. Currently CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE w/ CONFIG_APM_MODULE forces us to. CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE is of dubious value, it runs only on 32-bit uniprocessor laptops that are over 10 years old. It calls into the BIOS during idle, and is known to cause a number of machines to fail. Removing CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE and will allow us to stop exporting pm_idle. Any systems that were calling into the APM BIOS at run-time will simply use HLT instead. cc: x86@kernel.org cc: Jiri Kosina <jkosina@suse.cz> cc: stable@kernel.org # .39.x Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>

Some ioctl's were defined wrong on 2.6.2 and 2.6.6, using the wrong type of R/W arguments. They were fixed, but the old ioctl names are still there, maintained to avoid breaking binary compatibility: There's no sense on preserving those forever, as it is very doubtful that someone would try to use a such old binary with a modern kernel. Removing them will allow us to remove some magic done at the V4L ioctl handler. Note that any application compiled with a videodev2.h from 2.6.7 or later will be using the correct ioctls. 2011-02-02memsw: deprecate noswapaccount kernel parameter and schedule it for removalMichal Hocko1-0/+16
noswapaccount couldn't be used to control memsw for both on/off cases so we have added swapaccount[=0|1] parameter. This way we can turn the feature in two ways noswapaccount resp. swapaccount=0. We have kept the original noswapaccount but I think we should remove it after some time as it just makes more command line parameters without any advantages and also the code to handle parameters is uglier if we want both parameters. 2010-10-21V4L/DVB: Deprecate stradis driverMauro Carvalho Chehab1-2/+2
The driver author seems to not worked on this driver since its conversion from 2.2 to 2.4. Nobody is known to have a stradis hardware for testing. As it still uses V4L1 API, BKL and probably some other old stuff, someone would need to work on it to preserve the driver. Instead of investing time and efforts to keep porting it to work with new API's, it seems better to just drop the driver. So, let's move it to drivers/staging and label it to die at 2.6.38, if nobody cares enough to port parallel port support to gspca or to create a new driver that uses the same gspca-cpia sub-driver. 2010-10-21V4L/DVB: Deprecate cpia driver (used for parallel port webcams)Mauro Carvalho Chehab1-1/+16
cpia driver were re-written inside gspca driver, for USB devices. The only functionality that were not migrated is the support for parallel port, as: 1) the developer didn't find any hardware; 2) it doesn't seem important to keep support for a parallel port webcam, as this is an obsolete technology; 3) the changes at gspca for it to work with parallel port would be very large; 4) this driver still uses BKL. So, let's move it to drivers/staging and label it to die at 2.6.38, if nobody cares enough to port parallel port support to gspca or to create a new driver that uses the same gspca-cpia sub-driver. 2010-10-11ieee1394: remove the old IEEE 1394 driver stackStefan Richter1-10/+0
The drivers - ohci1394 (controller driver) - ieee1394 (core) - dv1394, raw1394, video1394 (userspace ABI) - eth1394, sbp2 (protocol drivers) are replaced by - firewire-ohci (controller driver) - firewire-core (core and userspace ABI) - firewire-net, firewire-sbp2 (protocol drivers) which are more featureful, better performing, and more secure than the older drivers; all with a smaller and more modern code base. The driver firedtv in drivers/media/dvb/firewire/ contains backends to both ieee1394 and firewire-core. Its ieee1394 backend code can be removed in an independent commit; firedtv as-is builds and works fine without ieee1394. The driver pcilynx (an incomplete controller driver) is deleted without replacement since PCILynx cards are extremely rare. Owners of these cards use them with the stand-alone bus sniffer driver nosy instead. The drivers nosy and init_ohci1394_dma which do not interact with either of the two IEEE 1394 stacks are not affected by the ieee1394 subsystem removal. There are still some issues with the newer firewire subsystem compared to the older one: - The rare and quirky controllers ALi M52xx, Apple UniNorth v1, NVIDIA NForce2 are even less well supported by firewire-ohci than by ohci1394. I am looking into the M52xx issue. - The experimental firewire-net is reportedly less stable than its experimental cousin eth1394. - Audio playback of a certain group of audio devices (ones based on DICE chipset with EAP; supported by prerelease FFADO code) does not work yet. This issue is still under investigation. - There were some ieee1394 based out-of-the-mainline drivers. Of them, only lisight, an audio driver for iSight webcams, seems still useful. Work is underway to reimplement it on top of firewire-core. All these remainig issues are minor; they should not stand in the way of overall better user experience of IEEE 1394 on Linux, together with a reduction in support efforts and maintenance burden. The coexistence of two IEEE 1394 kernel driver stacks in the mainline since 2.6.22 shall end now, as announced earlier this year. Signed-off-by: Stefan Richter <stefanr@s5r6.in-berlin.de>

2010-08-23x86, vmware: Remove deprecated VMI kernel supportAlok Kataria1-28/+0
With the recent innovations in CPU hardware acceleration technologies from Intel and AMD, VMware ran a few experiments to compare these techniques to guest paravirtualization technique on VMware's platform. These hardware assisted virtualization techniques have outperformed the performance benefits provided by VMI in most of the workloads. VMware expects that these hardware features will be ubiquitous in a couple of years, as a result, VMware has started a phased retirement of this feature from the hypervisor. Please note that VMI has always been an optimization and non-VMI kernels still work fine on VMware's platform. Latest versions of VMware's product which support VMI are, Workstation 7.0 and VSphere 4.0 on ESX side, future maintainence releases for these products will continue supporting VMI. For more details about VMI retirement take a look at this, http://blogs.vmware.com/guestosguide/2009/09/vmi-retirement.html This feature removal was scheduled for 2.6.37 back in September 2009. 2010-07-24ACPI / Sleep: Allow the NVS saving to be skipped during suspend to RAMRafael J. Wysocki1-0/+7
Commit 2a6b69765ad794389f2fc3e14a0afa1a995221c2 (ACPI: Store NVS state even when entering suspend to RAM) caused the ACPI suspend code save the NVS area during suspend and restore it during resume unconditionally, although it is known that some systems need to use acpi_sleep=s4_nonvs for hibernation to work. To allow the affected systems to avoid saving and restoring the NVS area during suspend to RAM and resume, introduce kernel command line option acpi_sleep=nonvs and make acpi_sleep=s4_nonvs work as its alias temporarily (add acpi_sleep=s4_nonvs to the feature removal file). 2010-05-25ieee1394: schedule for removalStefan Richter1-0/+10
All application domains that are supported by the old ieee1394 driver stack are supported by the newer firewire driver stack too. There is now good and extensive experience with the newer stack from deployment in Fedora since F7 as well as by enthusiast users of other distributions. The new drivers have consequently been recommended as the default ones since 2.6.33, in order to fix some severe usability problems of FireWire on Linux due to limitations of the old stack. It is now high time to announce when the obsolete drivers will be removed. Signed-off-by: Stefan Richter <stefanr@s5r6.in-berlin.de> Acked-by: Jarod Wilson <jarod@redhat.com>
