The following commit will make use of a Getopt::Long feature which is
only present in Perl >= 5.8.1. Document that as the minimum version we
support.
Many of our Perl scripts will continue to run with 5.8.0 but this change
allows us to adjust them as needed without breaking any promises to our
users.
The Perl requirement was last changed in d48b284183 (perl: bump the
required Perl version to 5.8 from 5.6.[21], 2010-09-24). At that time,
5.8.0 was 8 years old. It is now over 21 years old.

Amazingly, timegm(gmtime(0)) is only 0 before 2020 because perl's
timegm deviates from GNU timegm(3) in how it handles years.
man Time::Local says
Whenever possible, use an absolute four digit year instead.
with a detailed explanation about ambiguity of 2-digit years above that.
Even though this ambiguity is error-prone with >50% of users getting it
wrong, it has been like this for 20+ years, so we just use 4-digit years
everywhere to be on the safe side.
We add some extra logic to cvsimport because it allows 2-digit year
input and interpreting an 18 as 1918 can be avoided easily and safely.

Commit 5b4efea666 (cvsimport: shell-quote variable used in
backticks, 2017-09-11) tried to shell-quote a variable, but
forgot to use the "/g" modifier to apply the quoting to the
whole variable. This means we'd miss any embedded
single-quotes after the first one.

We run `git rev-parse` though the shell, and quote its
argument only with single-quotes. This prevents most
metacharacters from being a problem, but misses the obvious
case when $name itself has single-quotes in it. We can fix
this by applying the usual shell-quoting formula.

We had this in "git merge" manual for eternity:
'git merge' <msg> HEAD <commit>...
[This] syntax (<msg> `HEAD` <commit>...) is supported for
historical reasons. Do not use it from the command line or in
new scripts. It is the same as `git merge -m <msg> <commit>...`.
With the update to "git merge" to make it understand what is
recorded in FETCH_HEAD directly, including Octopus merge cases, we
now can rewrite the use of this syntax in "git pull" with a simple
"git merge FETCH_HEAD".
Also there are quite a few fallouts in the test scripts, and it
turns out that "git cvsimport" also uses this old syntax to record
a merge.
Judging from this result, I would not be surprised if dropping the
support of the old syntax broke scripts people have written and been
relying on for the past ten years. But at least we can start the
deprecation process by throwing a warning message when the syntax is
used.
With luck, we might be able to drop the support in a few years.

Some implementations of strftime(3) lack support for "%z". Also
there is no need for %s in git-cvsimport as the supplied time is
already in seconds since the epoch.
For %z, use the function get_tz_offset provided by Git.pm instead.

On many platforms, the first invocation of localtime_r will
check $TZ in the environment, but subsequent invocations
will use a cached value. That means that setting $ENV{TZ} in
the middle of the program may or may not have an effect on
later calls to localtime. Perl 5.10.0 and later handles
this automatically for us, but we try to remain portable
back to 5.8. Work around it by calling tzset ourselves.

CVS patchsets are imported with timestamps having an offset of +0000
(UTC). The cvs-authors file is already used to translate the CVS
username to full name and email in the corresponding commit. Extend
this file to support an optional timezone for calculating a user-
specific timestamp offset.

Certain characters such as "?" can be present in a CVS tag name, but
git does not allow these characters in tags. If git-cvsimport
encounters a CVS tag that git cannot handle, cvsimport will error and
refuse to continue the import beyond that point.
When importing CVS tags, strip all the inappropriate strings from the
tag names as we translate them to git tag names.
Provide more debugging information to the user if we've altered the
tag and the "git tag" command still fails. Also, warn the user if we
end up skipping an (unusable) tag altogether.

In conn, if password is not passed on command line, look for a password
entry in both the CVS password file and the CVSNT password file. If only
one file is found and the requested repository is in that file, or if both
files are found but the requested repository is found in only one file, use
the password from the single file containing the repository entry. If both
files are found and the requested repository is found in both files, then
produce an error message.
The CVS password file separates tokens with a space character, while
the CVSNT password file separates tokens with an equal (=) character.
Add a sub find_password_entry that accepts the password file name
and a delimiter to eliminate code duplication.

In this case a silent exit() instead of the die() would probably do,
but I assume that there could be cases where the connection attempt
succeeds, but reading from the server fails for other reasons.

The current code leads to
fatal: bad config value for 'cvsimport.r' in .git/config
for a standard use case with cvsimport.r set.
cvsimport sets internal variables by checking the config for each
possible command line option. The problem is that config items are case
insensitive, so config.r and config.R are the same. The ugly error is
due to that fact that cvsimport expects a bool for -R (and thus
config.R) but a remote name for -r (and thus config.r).
Fix this by making cvsimport expect long names for uppercase options.
config options for cvsimport have been undocumented so far, though
present in the code and advertised in several tutorials. So one may read
"enhance" for "fix". Similarly, the names for the options are
"documented" in the code, waitiing for their lowercase equivalents to be
transformed into long config options, as well.

Change the Perl scripts to turn on lexical warnings instead of setting
the global $^W variable via the -w switch.
The -w sets warnings for all code that interpreter runs, while "use
warnings" is lexically scoped. The former is probably not what the
authors wanted.
As an auxiliary benefit it's now possible to build Git with:
PERL_PATH='/usr/bin/env perl'
Which would previously result in failures, since "#!/usr/bin/env perl -w"
doesn't work as a shebang.

Formalize our dependency on perl 5.8, bumped from 5.6.[12]. We already
used the three-arg form of open() which was introduced in 5.6.1, but
t/t9700/test.pl explicitly depended on 5.6.2.
However git-add--interactive.pl has been failing on the 5.6 line since
it was introduced in v1.5.0-rc0~12^2~2 back in 2006 due to this open
syntax:

Which when executed dies on "Can't use an undefined value as
filehandle reference". Several of our tests also fail on 5.6 (even
more when compiled with NO_PERL_MAKEMAKER=1):

Our code is bitrotting on 5.6 with no-one interested in fixing it, and
pinning us to such an ancient release of Perl is keeping us from using
useful features introduced in the 5.8 release.
The 5.6 series is now over 10 years old, and the 5.6.2 maintenance
release almost 7. 5.8 on the other hand is more than 8 years old.
All the modern Unix-like operating systems have now upgraded to it or
a later version, and 5.8 packages are available for old IRIX, AIX
Solaris and Tru64 systems.

This option causes the creation or updating of a file mapping CVS
(filename, revision number) pairs to Git commit IDs. This is expected
to be useful if you have CVS revision numbers stored in commit messages,
bug-tracking systems, email archives, and the like.

This patch standardizes calls to system() where external git tools are
called. Instead of system("git foo ... "), use system(qw(git foo ...)).
All calls are made without the use of an 'sh -c' process to split the
arguments.

Standardize calls to open() where external git tools are used as
part of a pipeline. Instead of open(X, "git foo ... |)", use
open(X, "-|", qw(git foo ...)). All calls are made without the
use of an 'sh -c' process to split the arguments.

This patch updates all calling conventions for external git tools. to
use the modern calling convention (eg: git foo instead of git-foo).
This is almost entierly a s/git-/git / operation, with deviations only
as required to keep tests passing.

One of the first things that cvsimport does is chdir to the
newly created git repo. This means that any filenames given
to us on the command line will be looked up relative to the
git repo directory. This is probably not what the user
expects, so let's remember and prepend the original
directory for relative filenames.

If we do not read a password from the command line, and there are no
passwords stored in .cvspass, we have to initialize the password with
just "A".
This fixes a regression introduced by 3fb9d582 (Do not scramble
password read from .cvspass).

Passwords stored in .cvspass are already scrambled, we do not
want to scramble them twice. Only passwords read from the
command line are scrambled.
This fixes a regression introduced by b2139db (git-cvsimport: add support
for cvs pserver password scrambling., 2009-08-14).

Instead of a cleartext password, the CVS pserver expects a scrambled one
in the authentication request. With this patch it is possible to import
CVS repositories only accessible via pserver and user/password.

When you misuse a git command, you are shown the usage string.
But this is currently shown in the dashed form. So if you just
copy what you see, it will not work, when the dashed form
is no longer supported.
This patch makes git commands show the dash-less version.
For shell scripts that do not specify OPTIONS_SPEC, git-sh-setup.sh
generates a dash-less usage string now.

For CVS repositories with unusual CVSROOT, git-cvsimport would fail:
$ git-cvsimport -v -C foo -d :pserver:anon:@cvs.example.com:/ foo

This patch ensures that the path is never empty, but at least '/'.

The default value of @mergerx uses \W, which matches a non-word
character; this means that commit messages like "Merging FOO" are not
matched by default; using \b, which matches a word boundary, instead of
\W fixes that.

We were not previously checking the exit status of cvsps at
all. If it exited before producing any useful output, we
ended up with an empty import, which caused a spew of
confusing error messages from other parts of git:
$ git-cvsimport foo
Initialized empty Git repository in ...
some error from cvsps
fatal: refs/heads/origin: not a valid SHA1
fatal: master: not a valid SHA1
warning: You appear to be on a branch yet to be born.
warning: Forcing checkout of HEAD.
fatal: just how do you expect me to merge 0 trees?
checkout failed: 256
Now we get:
$ git-cvsimport foo
Initialized empty Git repository in ...
some error from cvsps

There were two problems:
1. We only look at the config variable if there is no module
given on the command line. We checked this by comparing
@ARGV == 0. However, at the time of the comparison, we
have not yet parsed the dashed options, meaning that
"git cvsimport" would read the variable but "git
cvsimport -a" would not. This is fixed by simply moving
the check after the call to getopt.
2. If the config variable did not exist, we were adding an
empty string to @ARGV. The rest of the script, rather
than barfing for insufficient input, would then try to
import the module '', leading to rather confusing error
messages. Based on patch from Emanuele Giaquinta.

Previously, if refs were packed, git-cvsimport would assume
that particular refs did not exist. This could lead to, for
example, overwriting previous 'origin' commits that were
packed.

The documentation states for the -u option that underscores in tag and
branch names are converted to dots, but this was actually implemented
for the tag names only.

When creating a brand new git repository through git-cvsimport (not
incremental import), force a checkout of HEAD of master as working tree
after successful import using the -f switch to git checkout. Otherwise
the working tree is empty, and all files are reported as 'deleted' by
git status.
This was noticed and reported by Cameron Dale through

Now uses git-tag instead of manually constructing the tag. This gives us a
correct timestamp, removes some crufty code, and makes it work the same as
git-cvsimport.
The generated tags are now lightweight tags instead of tag objects, which may
or may not be the behaviour we want.
Also, remove two unused variables from git-cvsimport.

This uses "git-apply --whitespace=strip" to fix whitespace errors that have
crept in to our source files over time. There are a few files that need
to have trailing whitespaces (most notably, test vectors). The results
still passes the test, and build result in Documentation/ area is unchanged.

Currently git-cvsimport tries to create tag objects directly via git-mktag
in a very broken way, e.g the stuff it writes into the tagger field of
the tag object doesn't really resemble the GIT_COMMITTER_IDENT. This makes
gitweb and possibly other tools that try to interpret tag objects to be
confused about tag date and authorship.
Fix this by calling git-tag instead. This also has a nice side effect of
not creating the tag object but only the lightweight tag as that's the only
thing CVS has anyways.

I was setting GIT_DIR=newproj.git and using the -i flag, but this bug
was thwarting the effort... evil CVS.

When in separate remote mode (via -r <remote>) we can now use
the name HEAD for the CVS HEAD. In keeping with git-clone
remotes/<remote>/HEAD is creates as a symbolic ref to the user
specified name for the HEAD which defaults to master.

cvsimport creates any branches found in the remote CVS repository
in the refs/heads namespace. This makes sense for a repository
conversion. When using git as a sane interface to a remote CVS
repository, that repository may well remain as the 'master'
respository. In this model it makes sense to import the CVS
repository into the refs/remotes namespace.
Add a new option '-r <remote>' to set the remote name for
this import. When this option is specified branches are named
refs/remotes/<remote>/branch, with HEAD named as master matching
git-clone separate remotes layout. Without branches are placed
ion refs/heads, with HEAD named origin as before.

Default values for command line options can be saved in .git/config (or the
global ~/.gitconfig). Config option names match the command line option names,
so cvsimport.d corresponds to git-cvsimport -d. One may also set
cvsimport.module to specify a default cvs module name.

With this patch, cvsimport will skip commits made
in the last 10 minutes. The recent-ness test is of
5 minutes + cvsps fuzz window (5 minutes default).
When working with a CVS repository that is in use,
importing commits that are too recent can lead to
partially incorrect trees. This is mainly due to
- Commits that are within the cvsps fuzz window may later
be found to have affected more files.
- When performing incremental imports, clock drift between
the systems may lead to skipped commits.
This commit helps keep incremental imports of in-use
CVS repositories sane.

This patch adds support for 'proxy' and 'proxyport' connection options
when using the pserver method for the CVS Root.
It has been tested with a Squid 2.5.x proxy server.
Quoting from the CVS info manual:
The `gserver' and `pserver' connection methods all accept optional
method options, specified as part of the METHOD string, like so:
:METHOD[;OPTION=ARG...]:
Currently, the only two valid connection options are `proxy', which
takes a hostname as an argument, and `proxyport', which takes a port
number as an argument. These options can be used to connect via an HTTP
tunnel style web proxy. For example, to connect pserver via a web proxy
at www.myproxy.net and port 8000, you would use a method of:
:pserver;proxy=www.myproxy.net;proxyport=8000:
*NOTE: The rest of the connection string is required to connect to
the server as noted in the upcoming sections on password authentication,
gserver and kserver. The example above would only modify the METHOD
portion of the repository name.*
PROXY must be supplied to connect to a CVS server via a proxy
server, but PROXYPORT will default to port 8080 if not supplied.
PROXYPORT may also be set via the CVS_PROXY_PORT environment variable.

Although I converted upstream coreutils to git last month, I just
reconverted coreutils once again, as a test, and ended up with a
git repository of about 130MB (contrast with my packed git repo of
size 52MB). That was because there were a lot of commits (but < 1024)
after the final automatic "git-repack -a -d".
Running a final
git-repack -a -d && git-prune-packed
cut the final repository size down to the expected size.
So this looks like an easy way to improve git-cvsimport.
Just run "git repack ..." at the end if there's more than
some reasonable amount of not-packed data.
My choice of 1MB is a little arbitrarily. I wouldn't mind missing
the minimal repo size by 1MB. At the other end of the spectrum,
it's probably not worthwhile to pack everything when the total
repository size is less than 1MB.

cvsimport opens all of the files in $GIT_DIR/refs/heads and reads
out the sha1's in order to work out what time the last commit on
that branch was made (in CVS) thus allowing incremental updates.
However, this takes no account of hierachical refs naming producing
the following error for each directory in $GIT_DIR/refs:
Use of uninitialized value in chomp at /usr/bin/git-cvsimport line 503.
Use of uninitialized value in concatenation (.) or string at
/usr/bin/git-cvsimport line 505.
usage: git-cat-file [-t|-s|-e|-p|<type>] <sha1>
Take advantage of the new packed refs work to use the new
for-each-ref iterator to get this information.

Indexes are only needed when we are about preparing to commit. Prime them
inside commit() when we have all the info we need, and remove all the
redundant index setups.
While we are at it, make sure that index handling is correct when opening
new branches, and on initial import.

Two bugs had slipped in the "keep one index per branch during import"
patch. Both incremental imports and new branches would see an
empty tree for their initial commit. Now we cover all the relevant
cases, checking whether we actually need to setup the index before
preparing the actual commit, and doing it.

With this patch we have a speedup and much lower IO when
importing trees with many branches. Instead of forcing
index re-population for each branch switch, we keep
many index files around, one per branch.

We now capture the output of cvsps to a tempfile, and then read it in.
cvsps 2.1 works quite a bit "in memory", and only prints its patchset
info once it has finished talking with cvs, but apparently retaining
all that memory allocation. With this patch, cvsps is finished and
reaped before cvsimport start working (and growing). So the footprint
of the whole process is much lower.

cvsps output often contains references to CVSPS_NO_BRANCH, commits
that it could not trace to a branch. Ignore that branch.
Additionally, cvsps will sometimes draw circular relationships
between branches -- where two branches are recorded as opening
from the other. In those cases, and where the ancestor branch
hasn't been seen, ignore it.

that a Perl installations on Mandrake 9.1 did not like it, even

we mistakenly said "oops, the server did not say a sensible

File retrieval from the socket is now moved to _fetchfile() and we now
cap reads at 1MB. This should limit the memory growth of the cvsimport
process.

This change attempts to clean up the commit function to make it a bit
easier to read (or at least the first half of it). It also improves
robustness and performance. Specifically:
- report get_headref errors on opening ref unless the error is ENOENT
- use regex to check for sha1 instead of length
- use lexically scoped filehandles which get cleaned up automagically
- check for error on both 'print' and 'close' (since output is buffered)
- avoid "fork, do some perl, then exec" in commit(). It's not necessary,
and we probably end up COW'ing parts of the perl process. Plus the code
is much smaller because we can use open2()
- avoid calling strftime over and over (mainly a readability cleanup)

after the import runs, but forgot to chomp what we read from the
command. The read-tree command did not them with the trailing

Documentation says -i is "import only", so without it,
subsequent import should update the current branch and working
tree files in a sensible way.
"A sensible way" defined by this commit is "act as if it is a
git pull from foreign repository which happens to be CVS not
git". So:
- If importing into the current branch (note that cvsimport
requires the tracking branch is pristine -- you checked out
the tracking branch but it is your responsibility not to make
your own commits there), fast forward the branch head and
match the index and working tree using two-way merge, just
like "git pull" does.
- If importing into a separate tracking branch, update that
branch head, and merge it into your current branch, again,
just like "git pull" does.

Fixed a couple of bugs in recovering from broken connections:
The _line() method now returns undef correctly when the connection
is broken instead of falling off the function and returning garbage.
Retries are now reported to stderr and the eventual partially
downloaded file is discarded instead of being appended to.
The "Server gone away" test has been removed, because it was
reachable only if the garbage return bug bit.

This fixes a minor bug, which caused the author email to be
doubly enclosed in a <> pair (the code gave enclosing <> to
GIT_AUTHOR_EMAIL and GIT_COMMITTER_EMAIL environment variable).
The read_author_info() subroutine is taught to also understand
the user list in CVSROOT/users format. This is primarily done
to ease migration for CVS users, who can use the -A option
to read from existing CVSROOT/users file. write_author_info()
always writes in the git-cvsimport's native format ('='
delimited and value without quotes).

This patch adds the option to specify an author name/email conversion
file in the format

which will translate the ugly cvs authornames to the more informative
git style.
The info is saved in $GIT_DIR/cvs-authors, so that subsequent
incremental imports will use the same author-info even if no -A
option is specified. If an -A option *is* specified, the info in
$GIT_DIR/cvs-authors is appended/updated appropriately.
Docs updated accordingly.

Detecting if the user passed --no-cvs-direct and don't force the mode.
It allows us to support all the protocol that the standard cvs client
supports at the snail speed you should expect.
This only affects the rlog reading stage.

Matching and reporting merge parents happens in a subprocess.
Re-open stdout before redirecting stdout to the pipe, so that printing
verbose messages doesn't go to the wrong place.

If the input looks like it has that already properly formatted,

As promised, this is the "big tool rename" patch. The primary differences
since 0.99.6 are:
(1) git-*-script are no more. The commands installed do not
have any such suffix so users do not have to remember if
something is implemented as a shell script or not.
(2) Many command names with 'cache' in them are renamed with
'index' if that is what they mean.
There are backward compatibility symblic links so that you and
Porcelains can keep using the old names, but the backward
compatibility support is expected to be removed in the near
future.
