2020-10-04gitsubmodules doc: invoke 'ls-files' with '--recurse-submodules'Philippe Blain1-10/+13
`git ls-files` was never taught to respect the `submodule.recurse` configuration variable, and it is too late now to change that [1], but still the command is mentioned in 'gitsubmodules(7)' as if it does respect that config. Adjust the call in 'gitsubmodules(7)' by calling 'ls-files' with the '--recurse-submodules' option. While at it, uniformize the capitalization in that file, and use backticks instead of quotes for Git commands and configuration variables. 2020-04-06doc: list all commands affected by submodule.recurseDamien Robert1-1/+2
Note that `ls-files` is not affected, even though it has a `--recurse-submodules` option, so list it as an exception too. Signed-off-by: Damien Robert <damien.olivier.robert+git@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2019-10-29help: add gitsubmodules to the list of guidesPhilippe Blain1-1/+1
The guide "gitsubmodules" was added in d480345 (submodules: overhaul documentation, 2017-06-22), but it was not added to command-list.txt when commit 1b81d8c (help: use command-list.txt for the source of guides, 2018-05-20) taught "git help" to obtain the guide list from this file. Add it now, and capitalize the first word of the description of gitsubmodules, as was done in 1b81d8c (help: use command-list.txt for the source of guides, 2018-05-20) for the other guides. 2019-05-28gitsubmodules: align html and nroff listsEmily Shaffer1-7/+7
There appears to be a bug in the toolchain generating manpages from lettered lists. When a list is enumerated with letters, the resulting nroff shows numbers instead. Mostly this is harmless, but in the case of gitsubmodules, the paragraph following the list refers back to each bullet by letter. As a result, reading this documentation via `man gitsubmodules` is hard to parse - readers must infer that a bug exists and a refers to 1, b refers to 2, and c refers to 3 in the list above. The problem specifically was introduced in ad47194; previously rather than generating numerated lists the bulleted area was entirely monospaced in HTML and shown in plaintext in nroff. The bug seems to exist in docbook-xml - I've reported it on May 1 via the docbook-apps mail list - but for now it may make more sense to just work around the issue. Doc markup fix. * ms/non-ascii-ticks: Documentation/gitsubmodules.txt: avoid non-ASCII apostrophes
2018-02-22Documentation/gitsubmodules.txt: avoid non-ASCII apostrophesMotoki Seki1-7/+7
In gitsubmodules.txt, a few non-ASCII apostrophes are used to spell possessive, e.g. "submodule's". These unfortunately are not rendered at https://git-scm.com/docs/gitsubmodules correctly by the renderer used there. Use ASCII apostrophes instead to work around the problem. It also is good to be consistent, as there are possessives spelled with ASCII apostrophes. 2017-06-22submodules: overhaul documentationStefan Beller1-0/+221
This patch aims to detangle (a) the usage of `git-submodule` from (b) the concept of submodules and (c) how the actual implementation looks like, such as where they are configured and (d) what the best practices are. To do so, move the conceptual parts of the 'git-submodule' man page to a new man page gitsubmodules(7). This new page is just like gitmodules(5), gitattributes(5), gitcredentials(7), gitnamespaces(7), gittutorial(7), which introduce a concept rather than explaining a specific command.
