In 606e088d5d (update-index: add --show-index-version, 2023-09-12), we
added the new '--show-index-version' option to 'git-update-index' and
documented it, but forgot to add it to the synopsis section.
Add '--show-index-version' to the synopsis of 'git-update-index'.

"git update-index --index-version N" is used to set the index format
version to a specific version, but there was no way to query the
current version used in the on-disk index file.
Teach the command a new "--show-index-version" option, and also
teach the "--index-version N" option to report what the version was
when run with the "--verbose" option.

Being invented in late 2012 no longer makes the index v4 format
"relatively young".
The support for the index version 4 was added to libgit2 with their
5625d86b (index: support index v4, 2016-05-17) and to JGit with
their e9cb0a8e (DirCache: support index V4, 2020-08-10).
Let's update the paragraph that discouraged its use for folks overly
cautious about cross-tool compatibility.

Inspired by 24966cd982 ("doc: fix repeated words", 08-09-2019),
I ran "egrep -R "\<([a-zA-Z]+)\> \<\1\>" ./Documentation/*" to
find current cases of repeated words such as "the the" that were
quite clearly typos.
There were many false positives reported, such as "really really"
or valid uses of "that that" which I left alone.

Asciidoc renders `--` as em-dash. This is not appropriate for command
names. It also breaks linkgit links to these commands.
Fix git-credential-cache--daemon and git-fsmonitor--daemon. The latter
was added 3248486920 (fsmonitor: document builtin fsmonitor, 2022-03-25)
and included several links. A check for broken links in the HTML docs
turned this up.
Manually inspecting the other Documentation/git-*--*.txt files turned up
the issue in git-credential-cache--daemon.
While here, quote `git credential-cache--daemon` in the synopsis to
match the vast majority of our other documentation.

Make several small updates, to address a few documentation issues
I spotted:
* sparse-checkout focused on "patterns" even though the inputs (and
outputs in the case of `list`) are directories in cone-mode
* The description section of the sparse-checkout documentation
was a bit sparse (no pun intended), and focused more on internal
mechanics rather than end user usage. This made sense in the
early days when the command was even more experimental, but let's
adjust a bit to try to make it more approachable to end users who
may want to consider using it. Keep the scary backward
compatibility warning, though; we're still hard at work trying to
fix up commands to behave reasonably in sparse checkouts.
* both read-tree and update-index tried to describe how to use the
skip-worktree bit, but both predated the sparse-checkout command.
The sparse-checkout command is a far easier mechanism to use and
for users trying to reduce the size of their working tree, we
should recommend users to look at it instead.
* The update-index documentation pointed out that assume-unchanged
and skip-worktree sounded similar but had different purposes.
However, it made no attempt to explain the differences, only to
point out that they were different. Explain the differences.
* The update-index documentation focused much more on (internal?)
implementation details than on end-user usage. Try to explain
its purpose better for users of update-index, rather than
fellow developers trying to work with the SKIP_WORKTREE bit.
* Clarify that when core.sparseCheckout=true, we treat a file's
presence in the working tree as being an override to the
SKIP_WORKTREE bit (i.e. in sparse checkouts when the file is
present we ignore the SKIP_WORKTREE bit).
Note that this commit, like many touching documentation, is best viewed
with the `--color-words` option to diff/log.

"directory cache" (or "directory cache index", "cache") are obsolete
terms which have been superseded by "index". Keeping them in the
documentation may be a source of confusion. This commit replaces
them with the current term, "index", on man pages.

It is quite common for users to want to ignore the changes to a file
that Git tracks. Common scenarios for this case are IDE settings and
configuration files, which should generally not be tracked and possibly
generated from tracked files using a templating mechanism.
However, users learn about the assume-unchanged and skip-worktree bits
and try to use them to do this anyway. This is problematic, because
when these bits are set, many operations behave as the user expects, but
they usually do not help when git checkout needs to replace a file.
There is no sensible behavior in this case, because sometimes the data
is precious, such as certain configuration files, and sometimes it is
irrelevant data that the user would be happy to discard.
Since this is not a supported configuration and users are prone to
misuse the existing features for unintended purposes, causing general
sadness and confusion, let's document the existing behavior and the
pitfalls in the documentation for git update-index so that users know
they should explore alternate solutions.
In addition, let's provide a recommended solution to dealing with the
common case of configuration files, since there are well-known
approaches used successfully in many environments.

While `git update-index` mostly ignores paths referring to index entries
whose skip-worktree bit is set, in b4d1690df11 (Teach Git to respect
skip-worktree bit (reading part), 2009-08-20), for reasons that are not
entirely obvious, the `--remove` option was made special: it _does_
remove index entries even if their skip-worktree bit is set.
Seeing as this behavior has been in place for a decade now, it does not
make sense to change it.
However, in preparation for fixing a bug in `git stash` where it
pretends that skip-worktree entries have actually been removed, we need
a mode where `git update-index` leaves all skip-worktree entries alone,
even if the `--remove` option was passed.

update-index: there no longer is `apply --index-info`

Back when we removed `git apply --index-info` in 2007, we forgot to
adjust the documentation for update-index that reads its output.
Let's reorder the description of three formats to present the other
two formats that are still generated by git commands before this
format, and stop mentioning `git apply --index-info`.

The following phrase could be interpreted multiple ways:
"To pretend you have a file with mode and sha1 at path"
In particular, I can think of two:
1. Pretend we have some new file, which happens to have a given mode
and sha1
2. Pretend one of the files we are already tracking has a different
mode and sha1 than what it really does
I think people could easily assume either case while reading, but the
example command provided doesn't actually handle the first case, which
caused some minor frustration to at least one user. Modify the example
command so that it correctly handles both cases, and re-order the
wording in a way that makes it more likely folks will assume the first
interpretation. I believe the new example shouldn't pose any obstacles
to those wanting the second interpretation (at worst, they pass an
unnecessary extra flag).

When formatted as a man page, 1st section header is always in upper
case even if we write it otherwise. Make all 1st section headers
uppercase to keep it close to the final output.
This does affect html since case is kept there, but I still think it's
a good idea to maintain a consistent style for 1st section headers.
Some sections perhaps should become second sections instead, where
case is kept, and for better organization. I will update if anyone has
suggestions about this.
While at there I also make some header more consistent (e.g. examples
vs example) and fix a couple minor things here and there.

Note the caveat where 2.17 is stricter about index validation
potentially causing "could not open directory" warnings when git is
upgraded. See the preceding "dir.c: stop ignoring opendir() error in
open_cached_dir()" change.
This caused some mayhem when I upgraded git to a version with this
series at Booking.com, and other users have doubtless enabled the UC
extension and are in for a surprise when they upgrade. Let's give them
a headsup in the docs.

Document the bug tested for in my "status: add a failing test showing
a core.untrackedCache bug" and fixed in Duy's "dir.c: fix missing dir
invalidation in untracked code".
Since this is very likely something others will encounter in the
future on older versions, and it's not obvious how to fix it let's
document both that it exists, and how to "fix" it with a one-off
command.
As noted in that commit, even though this bug gets the untracked cache
into a bad state, we have not yet found a case where this is user
visible, and thus it makes sense for these docs to focus on the
symlink case only.

Follow the Oxford style, which says to use "up-to-date" before the noun,
but "up to date" after it. Don't change plumbing (specifically
send-pack.c, but transport.c (git push) also has the same string).

When we know that mtime on directory as given by the environment
is usable for the purpose of untracked cache, we may want the
untracked cache to be always used without any mtime test or
kernel name check being performed.
Also when we know that mtime is not usable for the purpose of
untracked cache, for example because the repo is shared over a
network file system, we may want the untracked-cache to be
automatically removed from the index.
Allow the user to express such preference by setting the
'core.untrackedCache' configuration variable, which can take
'keep', 'false', or 'true' and default to 'keep'.
When read_index_from() is called, it now adds or removes the
untracked cache in the index to respect the value of this
variable. So it does nothing if the value is `keep` or if the
variable is unset; it adds the untracked cache if the value is
`true`; and it removes the cache if the value is `false`.
`git update-index --[no-|force-]untracked-cache` still adds the
untracked cache to, or removes it, from the index, but this
shows a warning if it goes against the value of
core.untrackedCache, because the next time the index is read
the untracked cache will be added or removed if the
configuration is set to do so.
Also `--untracked-cache` used to check that the underlying
operating system and file system change `st_mtime` field of a
directory if files are added or deleted in that directory. But
because those tests take a long time, `--untracked-cache` no
longer performs them. Instead, there is now
`--test-untracked-cache` to perform the tests. This change
makes `--untracked-cache` the same as `--force-untracked-cache`.
This last change is backward incompatible and should be
mentioned in the release notes.

Fixes long-standing misunderstanding of what assume-unchanged is
about. Some text near what is removed by the bottom patch may also
have to be removed.
* po/doc-assume-unchanged:
gitignore.txt: do not suggest assume-unchanged
doc: make clear --assume-unchanged's user contract
|
|
Many users misunderstand the --assume-unchanged contract, believing
it means Git won't look at the flagged file.
Be explicit that the --assume-unchanged contract is by the user that
they will NOT change the file so that Git does not need to look (and
expend, for example, lstat(2) cycles)
Mentioning "Git stops checking" does not help the reader, as it is
only one possible consequence of what that assumption allows Git to
do, but
(1) there are things other than "stop checking" that Git can do
based on that assumption; and
(2) Git is not obliged to stop checking; it merely is allowed to.
Also, this is a single flag bit, correct the plural to singular, and
the verb, accordingly.
Drop the stale and incorrect information about "poor-man's ignore",
which is not what this flag bit is about at all.

If you have a large work tree but only make changes in a subset, then
$GIT_DIR/index's size should be stable after a while. If you change
branches that touch something else, $GIT_DIR/index's size may grow
large that it becomes as slow as the unified index. Do --split-index
again occasionally to force all changes back to the shared index and
keep $GIT_DIR/index small.

The "--cacheinfo" option is unusual in that it takes three option
parameters. An option with an optional parameter is bad enough. An
option with multiple parameters is simply insane.
Introduce a new syntax that takes these three things concatenated
together with a comma, which makes the command line syntax more
uniform across subcommands, while retaining the traditional syntax
for backward compatiblity.
If we were designing the "update-index" subcommand from scratch
today, it may probably have made sense to make this option (and
possibly others) a command mode option that does not take any option
parameter (hence no need for arg-help). But we do not live in such
an ideal world, and as far as I can tell, the command still supports
(and must support) mixed command modes in a single invocation, e.g.
$ git update-index path1 --add path2 \
--cacheinfo 100644 $(git hash-object --stdin -w <path3) path3 \
path4
must make sure path1 is already in the index and update all of these
four paths. So this is probably as far as we can go to fix this issue
without risking to break people's existing scripts.

The point of these sections is generally to:
1. Give credit where it is due.
2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or
file bug reports.
But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they
are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer
can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the
correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you
wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and
incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody
useless.
So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except
git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list
for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section
to give credit to the major contributors and point to
shortlog and blame for more information.
Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can
follow that to the main git manpage.

For some reason, various manual pages have an asterisk escaped
with \ in the synopsis. Since there is no other asterisk to pair it
with, Asciidoc does not consider this asterisk escapable, so it passes
the backslash through.
Each page either uses [verse] or has only one asterisk, so it
is safe to drop the backslashes (checked with asciidoc 8.5.2).

The documentation was quite inconsistent when spelling 'git cmd' if it
only refers to the program, not to some specific invocation syntax:
both 'git-cmd' and 'git cmd' spellings exist.
The current trend goes towards dashless forms, and there is precedent
in 647ac70 (git-svn.txt: stop using dash-form of commands.,
2009-07-07) to actively eliminate the dashed variants.
Replace 'git-cmd' with 'git cmd' throughout, except where git-shell,
git-cvsserver, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack, and
git-upload-archive are concerned, because those really live in the
$PATH.

This patch explains more carefully that `.gitignore` concerns only
untracked files and refers the reader to
git update-index --assume-unchanged
in the need of ignoring uncommitted changes in already tracked files.
The description of this option is lifted to a more "porcelainish"
level and explains the caveats of this usecase.
Whether feasible or not, I believe adding this functionality to
the porcelain is out of the scope of this patch. (And I personally
think that referring to the plumbing in the case of such a special
usage is fine.)
This is currently probably one of the top FAQs at #git and the
--assume-unchanged switch is not widely known; gitignore(5) is the first
place where people are likely to look for it.

Since the git-* commands are not installed in $(bindir), using
"git-command <parameters>" in examples in the documentation is
not a good idea. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to
refer to each command using one hyphenated word. (There is no
escaping it, anyway: man page names cannot have spaces in them.)
This patch retains the dash in naming an operation, command,
program, process, or action. Complete command lines that can
be entered at a shell (i.e., without options omitted) are
made to use the dashless form.
The changes consist only of replacing some spaces with hyphens
and vice versa. After a "s/ /-/g", the unpatched and patched
versions are identical.

The OPTIONS section of a documentation file contains a list
of the options a git command accepts.
Currently there are several variants to describe the case that
different options (almost) do the same in the OPTIONS section.
Some are:
-f, --foo::
-f|--foo::
-f | --foo::
But AsciiDoc has the special form:
-f::
--foo::
This patch applies this form to the documentation of the whole git suite,
and removes useless em-dash prevention, so \--foo becomes --foo.

Some file systems that can host git repositories and their working copies
do not support symbolic links. But then if the repository contains a symbolic
link, it is impossible to check out the working copy.
This patch enables partial support of symbolic links so that it is possible
to check out a working copy on such a file system. A new flag
core.symlinks (which is true by default) can be set to false to indicate
that the filesystem does not support symbolic links. In this case, symbolic
links that exist in the trees are checked out as small plain files, and
checking in modifications of these files preserve the symlink property in
the database (as long as an entry exists in the index).
Of course, this does not magically make symbolic links work on such defective
file systems; hence, this solution does not help if the working copy relies
on that an entry is a real symbolic link.

After running 'git-update-index' for some paths, you may want to
do the update on the same set of paths again.
The new flag --again checks the paths whose index entries are
are different from the HEAD commit and updates them from the
working tree contents.
This was brought up by Carl Worth on #git.

A bare "--" doesn't show up in man or html pages correctly
as two individual dashes unless backslashed as \--
in the asciidoc source. Note, no backslash is needed
inside a literal block.

Unfortunately docbook does not allow a callout to be
referenced from inside a callout list description.
Rewrite one paragraph in git-reset man page to work
around this limitation.

The new merge world order tells the merge strategies to leave
the cache unmerged and store the automerge result in the working
tree if automerge is not clean. This was done for the resolve
strategy and recursive strategy when no rename is involved, but
recording a conflicting merge in the rename case could not
easily be done by the recursive strategy.
This commit adds a new input format, in addition to the exsting
two, to "update-index --index-info".
(1) mode SP sha1 TAB path
The first format is what "git-apply --index-info"
reports, and used to reconstruct a partial tree
that is used for phony merge base tree when falling
back on 3-way merge.
(2) mode SP type SP sha1 TAB path
The second format is to stuff git-ls-tree output
into the index file.
(3) mode SP sha1 SP stage TAB path
This format is to put higher order stages into the
index file and matches git-ls-files --stage output.
To place a higher stage entry to the index, the path should
first be removed by feeding a mode=0 entry for the path, and
then feeding necessary input lines in the (3) format.
For example, starting with this index:
$ git ls-files -s
100644 8a1218a1024a212bb3db30becd860315f9f3ac52 0 frotz
$ git update-index --index-info ;# interactive session -- input follows...
0 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000 frotz
100644 8a1218a1024a212bb3db30becd860315f9f3ac52 1 frotz
100755 8a1218a1024a212bb3db30becd860315f9f3ac52 2 frotz
The first line of the input feeds 0 as the mode to remove the
path; the SHA1 does not matter as long as it is well formatted.
Then the second and third line feeds stage 1 and stage 2 entries
for that path. After the above, we would end up with this:
$ git ls-files -s
100644 8a1218a1024a212bb3db30becd860315f9f3ac52 1 frotz
100755 8a1218a1024a212bb3db30becd860315f9f3ac52 2 frotz
This completes the groundwork for the new merge world order.

The fixes focuses on improving the HTML output. Most noteworthy:
- Fix the Makefile to also make various *.html files depend on
included files.
- Consistently use 'NOTE: ...' instead of '[ ... ]' for additional
info.
- Fix ending '::' for description lists in OPTION section etc.
- Fix paragraphs in description lists ending up as preformated text.
- Always use listingblocks (preformatted text wrapped in lines with -----)
for examples that span empty lines, so they are put in only one HTML
block.
- Use '1.' instead of '(1)' for numbered lists.
- Fix linking to other GIT docs.
- git-rev-list.txt: put option descriptions in an OPTION section.

As promised, this is the "big tool rename" patch. The primary differences
since 0.99.6 are:
(1) git-*-script are no more. The commands installed do not
have any such suffix so users do not have to remember if
something is implemented as a shell script or not.
(2) Many command names with 'cache' in them are renamed with
'index' if that is what they mean.
There are backward compatibility symblic links so that you and
Porcelains can keep using the old names, but the backward
compatibility support is expected to be removed in the near
future.
