2024-03-13status: allow --untracked=false and friendsJunio C Hamano1-0/+2
It is natural to expect that the "--untracked" option and the status.showuntrackedFiles configuration variable to take a Boolean value ("do you want me to show untracked files?"), but the current code takes nothing but "no" as "no, please do not show any". Allow the usual Boolean values to be given, and treat 'true' as "normal", and 'false' as "no". Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2021-03-23commit: add --trailer optionZheNing Hu1-1/+13
Historically, Git has supported the 'Signed-off-by' commit trailer using the '--signoff' and the '-s' option from the command line. But users may need to provide other trailer information from the command line such as "Helped-by", "Reported-by", "Mentored-by", Now implement a new `--trailer <token>[(=|:)<value>]` option to pass other trailers to `interpret-trailers` and insert them into commit messages. 2020-10-20doc: preparatory clean-up of description on the sign-off optionJunio C Hamano1-8/+2
Almost identical text on the signed-off-by trailer appears in the documentation for "git commit" and "git merge" and its friends. Introduce a new signoff-option.txt file to be shared. A couple of things of note are: - The short-form "-s" is available only in "git commit", but not in commands that are friends of "git merge", as it is used as a short-hand for "--strategy". - The original lacks description on the negated "--no-signoff" form on "git commit" side, but it equally is applicable. It however was unclear in the original text that not adding a Signed-off-by trailer is the default, so rephrase to explain it as a way to countermand a --signoff option that appeared earlier on the same command line. This is in preparation to apply a further clarification on what exactly the Signed-off-by trailer means. 2020-01-22doc: provide guidance on user.name formatbrian m. carlson1-0/+6
It's a frequent misconception that the user.name variable controls authentication in some way, and as a result, beginning users frequently attempt to change it when they're having authentication troubles. Document that the convention is that this variable represents some form of a human's personal name, although that is not required. In addition, address concerns about whether Unicode is supported. Use the term "personal name" as this is likely to draw the intended contrast, be applicable across cultures which may have different naming conventions, and be easily understandable to people who do not speak English as their first language. Indicate that "some form" is conventionally used, as people may use a nickname or preferred name instead of a full legal name. Point users who may be confused about authentication to an appropriate configuration option instead. Provide a shortened form of this information in the configuration option description. 2020-01-22doc: move author and committer information to git-commit(1)brian m. carlson1-3/+24
While at one time it made perfect sense to store information about configuring author and committer information in the documentation for git commit-tree, in modern Git that operation is seldom used. Most users will use git commit and expect to find comprehensive documentation about its use in the manual page for that command. Considering that there is significant confusion about how one is to use the user.name and user.email variables, let's put as much documentation as possible into an obvious place where users will be more likely to find it. In addition, expand the environment variables section to describe their use more fully. Even though we now describe all of the options there and in the configuration settings documentation, preserve the existing text in git-commit.txt so that people can easily reason about the ordering of the various options they can use. Explain the use of the author.* and committer.* options as well. Signed-off-by: brian m. carlson <sandals@crustytoothpaste.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2019-11-20commit: support the --pathspec-from-file optionAlexandr Miloslavskiy1-1/+15
Decisions taken for simplicity: 1) For now, `--pathspec-from-file` is declared incompatible with `--interactive/--patch`, even when <file> is not `stdin`. Such use case it not really expected. 2019-09-09Documentation: wrap blocks with "--"Martin Ågren1-3/+5
The documentation for each of these options contains a list. After the list, AsciiDoc interprets the continuation as a continuation of the *list*, not as a continution of the larger block. As a result, we get too much indentation. Wrap the entire blocks in "--" to fix this. With Asciidoctor, this commit is a no-op, and the two programs now render these identically. These two files share the same problem and indeed, they both document `--untracked-files` in quite similar ways. I haven't checked to what extent that is intentional or warranted, and to what extent they have simply drifted apart. I consider such an investigation and possible cleanup as out of scope for this commit and this patch series. 2019-05-07doc: promote "git restore"Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy1-1/+1
The new command "git restore" (together with "git switch") are added to avoid the confusion of one-command-do-all "git checkout" for new users. They are also helpful to avoid ambiguous context. For these reasons, promote it everywhere possible. This includes documentation, suggestions/advice from other commands. One nice thing about git-restore is the ability to restore "everything", so it can be used in "git status" advice instead of both "git checkout" and "git reset". The three commands suggested by "git status" are add, rm and restore. "git checkout" is also removed from "git help" (i.e. it's no longer considered a commonly used command) Signed-off-by: Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy <pclouds@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2017-12-22commit: add support for --fixup <commit> -m"<extra message>"Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-2/+1
Add support for supplying the -m option with --fixup. Doing so has errored out ever since --fixup was introduced. Before this, the only way to amend the fixup message while committing was to use --edit and amend it in the editor. The use-case for this feature is one of: * Leaving a quick note to self when creating a --fixup commit when it's not self-evident why the commit should be squashed without a note into another one. * (Ab)using the --fixup feature to "fix up" commits that have already been pushed to a branch that doesn't allow non-fast-forwards, i.e. just noting "this should have been part of that other commit", and if the history ever got rewritten in the future the two should be combined. In such a case you might want to leave a small message, e.g. "forgot this part, which broke XYZ". With this, --fixup <commit> -m"More" -m"Details" will result in a commit message like: !fixup <subject of <commit>> More Details The reason the test being added here seems to squash "More" at the end of the subject line of the commit being fixed up is because the test code is using "%s%b" so the body immediately follows the subject, it's not a bug in this code, and other tests t7500-commit.sh do the same thing. When the --fixup option was initially added the "Option -m cannot be combined" error was expanded from -c, -C and -F to also include --fixup[1] Those options could also support combining with -m, but given what they do I can't think of a good use-case for doing that, so I have not made the more invasive change of splitting up the logic in commit.c to first act on those, and then on -m options. 1. d71b8ba7c9 ("commit: --fixup option for use with rebase --autosquash", 2010-11-02) Helped-by: Eric Sunshine <sunshine@sunshineco.com> Signed-off-by: Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason <avarab@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2017-07-18doc: reformat the paragraph containing the 'cut-line'Kaartic Sivaraam1-5/+6
The paragraph that describes the 'scissors' cleanup mode of 'commit' had the 'cut-line' in the middle of a sentence. This made it possible for the line to get wrapped on smaler windows. This shouldn't be the case as it makes it hard for the user to understand the structure of the cut-line. Reformat the pragraph to make the 'cut-line' stand on a line of it's own thus distinguishing it from the rest of the paragraph. This further prevents it from getting wrapped to some extent. How pathspec is used, with and without --interactive/--patch, is different. But this is not clear from the document. These changes hint the user to keep reading (to option #5) instead of stopping at #2 and assuming --patch/--interactive behaves the same way. And since all the options listed here always mention how the index is involved (or not) in the final commit, add that bit for #5 as well. This "on top of the index" is implied when you head over git-add(1), but if you just go straight to the "Interactive mode" and not read what git-add is for, you may miss it. "When you need to use space, use dash" is a strange way to say that you must not use a space. Because it is more common for the command line descriptions to use dashed-multi-words, you do not even want to use spaces in these places. Rephrase the documentation to avoid this strangeness. Fix a few existing multi-word argument help strings, i.e. - GPG key-ids given to -S/--gpg-sign are "key-id"; - Refs used for storing notes are "notes-ref"; and - Expiry timestamps given to --expire are "expiry-date". and update the corresponding documentation pages. 2012-10-18status: add --long output format optionJeff King1-0/+4
You can currently set the output format to --short or --porcelain. There is no --long, because we default to it already. However, you may want to override an alias that uses "--short" to get back to the default. This requires a little bit of refactoring, because currently we use STATUS_FORMAT_LONG internally to mean the same as "the user did not specify anything". By expanding the enum to include STATUS_FORMAT_NONE, we can distinguish between the implicit and explicit cases. This effects these conditions: 1. The user has asked for NUL termination. With NONE, we currently default to turning on the porcelain mode. With an explicit --long, we would in theory use NUL termination with the long mode, but it does not support it. So we can just complain and die. 2. When an output format is given to "git commit", we default to "--dry-run". This behavior would now kick in when "--long" is given, too. 2012-04-26docs: stop using asciidoc no-inline-literalJeff King1-2/+2
In asciidoc 7, backticks like `foo` produced a typographic effect, but did not otherwise affect the syntax. In asciidoc 8, backticks introduce an "inline literal" inside which markup is not interpreted. To keep compatibility with existing documents, asciidoc 8 has a "no-inline-literal" attribute to keep the old behavior. We enabled this so that the documentation could be built on either version. It has been several years now, and asciidoc 7 is no longer in wide use. We can now decide whether or not we want inline literals on their own merits, which are: 1. The source is much easier to read when the literal contains punctuation. You can use `master~1` instead of `master{tilde}1`. 2. They are less error-prone. Because of point (1), we tend to make mistakes and forget the extra layer of quoting. This patch removes the no-inline-literal attribute from the Makefile and converts every use of backticks in the documentation to an inline literal (they must be cleaned up, or the example above would literally show "{tilde}" in the output). Problematic sites were found by grepping for '`.*[{\\]' and examined and fixed manually. The results were then verified by comparing the output of "html2text" on the set of generated html pages. Doing so revealed that in addition to making the source more readable, this patch fixes several formatting bugs: - HTML rendering used the ellipsis character instead of literal "..." in code examples (like "git log A...B") - some code examples used the right-arrow character instead of '->' because they failed to quote - api-config.txt did not quote tilde, and the resulting HTML contained a bogus snippet like: <tt></tt> foo <tt>bar</tt> which caused some parsers to choke and omit whole sections of the page. - git-commit.txt confused ``foo`` (backticks inside a literal) with ``foo'' (matched double-quotes) - mentions of `A U Thor <author@example.com>` used to erroneously auto-generate a mailto footnote for author@example.com - the description of --word-diff=plain incorrectly showed the output as "[-removed-] and {added}", not "{+added+}". - using "prime" notation like: commit `C` and its replacement `C'` confused asciidoc into thinking that everything between the first backtick and the final apostrophe were meant to be inside matched quotes - asciidoc got confused by the escaping of some of our asterisks. In particular, `credential.\*` and `credential.<url>.\*` properly escaped the asterisk in the first case, but literally passed through the backslash in the second case. * jn/maint-doc-dashdash: Documentation: quote double-dash for AsciiDoc
2011-06-29Documentation: quote double-dash for AsciiDocJonathan Nieder1-1/+1
AsciiDoc versions since 5.0.6 treat a double-dash surrounded by spaces (outside of verbatim environments) as a request to insert an em dash. Such versions also treat the three-character sequence "\--", when not followed by another dash, as a request to insert two literal minus signs. Thus from time to time there have been patches to add backslashes to AsciiDoc markup to escape double-dashes that are meant to be represent '--' characters used literally on the command line; see v1.4.0-rc1~174, Fix up docs where "--" isn't displayed correctly, 2006-05-05, for example. AsciiDoc 6.0.3 (2005-04-20) made life harder by also treating double-dashes without surrounding whitespace as markup for an em dash, though only when formatting for backends other than the manpages (e.g., HTML). Many pages needed to be changed to use a backslash before the "--" in names of command-line flags like "--add" (see v0.99.6~37, Update tutorial, 2005-08-30). AsciiDoc 8.3.0 (2008-11-29) refined the em-dash rule to avoid that requirement. Double-dashes without surrounding spaces are not rendered as em dashes any more unless bordered on both sides by alphanumeric characters. The unescaped markup for option names (e.g., "--add") works fine, and many instances of this style have leaked into Documentation/; git's HTML documentation contains many spurious em dashes when formatted by an older toolchain. (This patch will not change that.) The upshot: "--" as an isolated word and in phrases like "git web--browse" must be escaped if it is not to be rendered as an em dash by current asciidoc. Use "\--" to avoid such misformatting in sentences in which "--" represents a literal double-minus command line argument that separates options and revs from pathspecs, and use "{litdd}" in cases where the double-dash is embedded in the command name. The latter is just for consistency with v1.7.3-rc0~13^2 (Work around em-dash handling in newer AsciiDoc, 2010-08-23). List of lines to fix found by grepping manpages for "(em". 2011-03-11doc: drop author/documentation sections from most pagesJeff King1-6/+0
The point of these sections is generally to: 1. Give credit where it is due. 2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or file bug reports. But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody useless. So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section to give credit to the major contributors and point to shortlog and blame for more information. Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can follow that to the main git manpage.

2011-02-21Teach commit about CHERRY_PICK_HEADJay Soffian1-3/+4
Previously the user was advised to use commit -c CHERRY_PICK_HEAD after a conflicting cherry-pick. While this would preserve the original commit's authorship, it would sadly discard cherry-pick's carefully crafted MERGE_MSG (which contains the list of conflicts as well as the original commit-id in the case of cherry-pick -x). On the other hand, if a bare 'commit' were performed, it would preserve the MERGE_MSG while resetting the authorship. In other words, there was no way to simultaneously take the authorship from CHERRY_PICK_HEAD and the commit message from MERGE_MSG. This change fixes that situation. A bare 'commit' will now take the authorship from CHERRY_PICK_HEAD and the commit message from MERGE_MSG. If the user wishes to reset authorship, that must now be done explicitly via --reset-author. A side-benefit of passing commit authorship along this way is that we can eliminate redundant authorship parsing code from revert.c. This should make the behavior of commands in edge cases (e.g., editor names with spaces) a little more consistent. 2009-11-04commit -c/-C/--amend: reset timestamp and authorship to committer with ↵Erick Mattos1-1/+6
--reset-author When we use -c, -C, or --amend, we are trying one of two things: using the source as a template or modifying a commit with corrections. When these options are used, the authorship and timestamp recorded in the newly created commit are always taken from the original commit. This is inconvenient when we just want to borrow the commit log message or when our change to the code is so significant that we should take over the authorship (with the blame for bugs we introduce, of course). The new --reset-author option is meant to solve this need by regenerating the timestamp and setting the committer as the new author. 2009-09-13git-commit doc: remove duplicated --dry-run descriptionJunio C Hamano1-7/+1
60c2993 (Documentation/git-commit.txt: describe --dry-run, 2009-08-15) wanted to update the documentation to say that "git status" is not the same as "git commit --dry-run" anymore, but it screwed up and also added the description of --dry-run that was already present. 2009-09-05commit: support alternate status formatsJeff King1-0/+14
The status command recently grew "short" and "porcelain" options for alternate output formats. Since status is no longer "commit --dry-run", these formats are inaccessible to people who do want to see a dry-run in a parseable form. This patch makes those formats available to "git commit", implying the "dry-run" option when they are used. Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2008-07-05Documentation: more "git-" versus "git " changesJonathan Nieder1-1/+1
With git-commands moving out of $(bindir), it is useful to make a clearer distinction between the git subcommand 'git-whatever' and the command you type, `git whatever <options>`. 2008-07-01Documentation formatting and cleanupJonathan Nieder1-10/+10
Following what appears to be the predominant style, format names of commands and commandlines both as `teletype text`. 2008-07-01Documentation: be consistent about "git-" versus "git "Jonathan Nieder1-2/+2
Since the git-* commands are not installed in $(bindir), using "git-command <parameters>" in examples in the documentation is not a good idea. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to refer to each command using one hyphenated word. (There is no escaping it, anyway: man page names cannot have spaces in them.) This patch retains the dash in naming an operation, command, program, process, or action. Complete command lines that can be entered at a shell (i.e., without options omitted) are made to use the dashless form. The changes consist only of replacing some spaces with hyphens and vice versa. After a "s/ /-/g", the unpatched and patched versions are identical. Signed-off-by: Jonathan Nieder <jrnieder@uchicago.edu> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

The OPTIONS section of a documentation file contains a list of the options a git command accepts. The prepare-commit-msg hook is run whenever a "fresh" commit message is prepared, just before it is shown in the editor (if it is). Its purpose is to modify the commit message in-place. It takes one to three parameters. The first is the name of the file that the commit log message. The second is the source of the commit message, and can be: "message" (if a -m or -F option was given); "template" (if a -t option was given or the configuration option commit.template is set); "merge" (if the commit is a merge or a .git/MERGE_MSG file exists); "squash" (if a .git/SQUASH_MSG file exists); or "commit", followed by a commit SHA1 as the third parameter (if a -c, -C or --amend option was given). If its exit status is non-zero, git-commit will abort. The hook is not suppressed by the --no-verify option, so it should not be used as a replacement for the pre-commit hook. The sample prepare-commit-msg comments out the `Conflicts:` part of a merge's commit message; other examples are commented out, including adding a Signed-off-by line at the bottom of the commit messsage, that the user can then edit or discard altogether. 2007-12-22Allow selection of different cleanup modes for commit messagesAlex Riesen1-1/+11
Although we traditionally stripped away excess blank lines, trailing whitespaces and lines that begin with "#" from the commit log message, sometimes the message just has to be the way user wants it. For instance, a commit message template can contain lines that begin with "#", the message must be kept as close to its original source as possible if you are converting from a foreign SCM, or maybe the message has a shell script including its comments for future reference. The cleanup modes are default, verbatim, whitespace and strip. The default mode depends on if the message is being edited and will either strip whitespace and comments (if editor active) or just strip the whitespace (for where the message is given explicitely). 2006-02-06git-commit: revamp the git-commit semantics.Junio C Hamano1-4/+57
- "git commit" without _any_ parameter keeps the traditional behaviour. It commits the current index. We commit the whole index even when this form is run from a subdirectory. - "git commit --include paths..." (or "git commit -i paths...") is equivalent to: git update-index --remove paths... git commit - "git commit paths..." acquires a new semantics. This is an incompatible change that needs user training, which I am still a bit reluctant to swallow, but enough people seem to have complained that it is confusing to them. It 1. refuses to run if $GIT_DIR/MERGE_HEAD exists, and reminds trained git users that the traditional semantics now needs -i flag. 2. refuses to run if named paths... are different in HEAD and the index (ditto about reminding). Added paths are OK. 3. reads HEAD commit into a temporary index file. 4. updates named paths... from the working tree in this temporary index. 5. does the same updates of the paths... from the working tree to the real index. 6. makes a commit using the temporary index that has the current HEAD as the parent, and updates the HEAD with this new commit. - "git commit --all" can run from a subdirectory, but it updates the index with all the modified files and does a whole tree commit. - In all cases, when the command decides not to create a new commit, the index is left as it was before the command is run. This means that the two "git diff" in the following sequence: $ git diff $ git commit -a $ git diff would show the same diff if you abort the commit process by making the commit log message empty. This commit also introduces much requested --author option. $ git commit --author 'A U Thor <author@example.com>' Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>

2005-12-16Examples of resetting.Junio C Hamano1-0/+4
Morten Welinder says examples of resetting is really about recovering from botched commit/pulls. I agree that pointers from commands that cause a reset to be needed in the first place would be very helpful. Also reset examples did not mention "pull/merge" cases. 2005-09-07Big tool rename.Junio C Hamano1-0/+72
As promised, this is the "big tool rename" patch. The primary differences since 0.99.6 are: (1) git-*-script are no more. The commands installed do not have any such suffix so users do not have to remember if something is implemented as a shell script or not. (2) Many command names with 'cache' in them are renamed with 'index' if that is what they mean. There are backward compatibility symblic links so that you and Porcelains can keep using the old names, but the backward compatibility support is expected to be removed in the near future.
