The unnecessary include in the header transitively pulled in some
other headers actually needed by source files, though. Have those
source files explicitly include the headers they need.

Each of these were checked with
gcc -E -I. ${SOURCE_FILE} | grep ${HEADER_FILE}
to ensure that removing the direct inclusion of the header actually
resulted in that header no longer being included at all (i.e. that
no other header pulled it in transitively).
...except for a few cases where we verified that although the header
was brought in transitively, nothing from it was directly used in
that source file. These cases were:
* builtin/credential-cache.c
* builtin/pull.c
* builtin/send-pack.c

Dozens of files made use of gettext functions, without explicitly
including gettext.h. This made it more difficult to find which files
could remove a dependence on cache.h. Make C files explicitly include
gettext.h if they are using it.
However, while compat/fsmonitor/fsm-ipc-darwin.c should also gain an
include of gettext.h, it was left out to avoid conflicting with an
in-flight topic.

ee4512ed48 ("trace2: create new combined trace facility", 2019-02-
22) introduced trace2_cmd_name() and taught both the Git built-ins and
some non-built-ins to use it. However, http-fetch was not one of them
(perhaps due to its low usage at the time).
Teach http-fetch to invoke this function. After this patch, this
function will be invoked right after argument parsing, just like in
remote-curl.c.

http-fetch prints the URL after failing to fetch it. This can be
confusing to users (they cannot really do anything with it), and they
can share by accident a sensitive URL (e.g. with credentials) while
looking for help.
Redact the URL unless the GIT_TRACE_REDACT variable is set to false. This
mimics the redaction of other sensitive information in git, like the
Authorization header in HTTP.
Fix also capitalization of previous die() message (must start in
lowercase).

Currently, when fetching, packfiles referenced by URIs are run through
index-pack without any arguments other than --stdin and --keep, no
matter what arguments are used for the packfile that is inline in the
fetch response. As a preparation for ensuring that all packs (whether
inline or not) use the same index-pack arguments, teach the http
subsystem to allow custom index-pack arguments.
http-fetch has been updated to use the new API. For now, it passes
--keep alone instead of --keep with a process ID, but this is only
temporary because http-fetch itself will be taught to accept index-pack
parameters (instead of using a hardcoded constant) in a subsequent
commit.

In dd4b732df7 ("upload-pack: send part of packfile response as uri",
2020-06-10), the git http-fetch code learned how to take ac --packfile
option. This option takes an argument, which is the name of a packfile
hash, and parses it using parse_oid_hex. It does so before calling
setup_git_directory.
However, in a SHA-256 repository this fails to work, since we have not
set the hash algorithm in use and parse_oid_hex fails as a consequence.
To ensure that we can parse packfile hashes of the right length, let's
set up the git directory before we start parsing arguments.
Since we still want to allow the invocation of -h to print the help when
we're not in a repository, gracefully handle us being outside of one and
produce an error after argument parsing has finished.

Teach http-fetch the ability to download packfiles directly, given a
URL, and to verify them.
The http_pack_request suite has been augmented with a function that
takes a URL directly. With this function, the hash is only used to
determine the name of the temporary file.

"git http-fetch" (deprecated) had an optional and experimental
"feature" to fetch only commits and/or trees, which nobody used.
This has been removed.

After the previous commit, both users of `struct walker` set `get_tree`,
`get_history` and `get_all` to 1. Drop those fields and simplify the
walker implementation accordingly.
Let's hope that any out-of-tree users will not mind this change. They
should notice that the compilation fails as they try to set these
fields. (If they do not set them, note that `get_http_walker()` leaves
them undefined, so the behavior will have been undefined all the time.)

This is a follow-up to a6c786fce8 (Mark http-fetch without -a as
deprecated, 2011-08-23). For more than six years, we have been warning
when `-a` is not provided, and the documentation has been saying that
`-a` will become the default.
It is a bit unclear what "default" means here. There is no such thing as
`http-fetch --no-a`. But according to my searches, no-one has been
asking on the mailing list how they should silence the warning and
prepare for overriding the flipped default. So let's assume that
everybody is happy with `-a`. They should be, since not using it may
break the repo in such a way that Git itself is unable to fix it.
Always behave as if `-a` was given. Since `-a` implies `-c` (get commit
objects) and `-t` (get trees), all three options are now unnecessary.
Document all of these as historical artefacts that have no effect.
Leave no-op code for handling these options in http-fetch.c. The
options-handling is currently rather loose. If someone tightens it, we
will not want these ignored options to accidentally turn into hard
errors.
Since `-a` was the only safe and sane usage and we have been pushing
people towards it for a long time, refrain from warning when it is used
"unnecessarily" now. Similarly, do not add anything scary-looking to the
man-page about how it will be removed in the future. We can always do so
later. (It is not like we are in desperate need of freeing up
one-letter arguments.)

This should be part of every program, as otherwise users do
not get translated error messages. However, some external
commands forgot to do so (e.g., git-credential-store). This
fixes them, and eliminates the repeated code in programs
that did remember to use it.

Every program which links against libgit.a must call this
function, or risk hitting an assert() in system_path() that
checks whether we have configured argv0_path (though only
when RUNTIME_PREFIX is defined, so essentially only on
Windows).
Looking at the diff, you can see that putting it into the
common main() saves us having to do it individually in each
of the external commands. But what you can't see are the
cases where we _should_ have been doing so, but weren't
(e.g., git-credential-store, and all of the t/helper test
programs).
This has been an accident-waiting-to-happen for a long time,
but wasn't triggered until recently because it involves one
of those programs actually calling system_path(). That
happened with git-credential-store in v2.8.0 with ae5f677
(lazily load core.sharedrepository, 2016-03-11). The
program:
- takes a lock file, which...
- opens a tempfile, which...
- calls adjust_shared_perm to fix permissions, which...
- lazy-loads the config (as of ae5f677), which...
- calls system_path() to find the location of
/etc/gitconfig
On systems with RUNTIME_PREFIX, this means credential-store
reliably hits that assert() and cannot be used.
We never noticed in the test suite, because we set
GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM there, which skips the system_path()
lookup entirely. But if we were to tweak git_config() to
find /etc/gitconfig even when we aren't going to open it,
then the test suite shows multiple failures (for
credential-store, and for some other test helpers). I didn't
include that tweak here because it's way too specific to
this particular call to be worth carrying around what is
essentially dead code.
The implementation is fairly straightforward, with one
exception: there is exactly one caller (git.c) that actually
cares about the result of the function, and not the
side-effect of setting up argv0_path. We can accommodate
that by simply replacing the value of argv[0] in the array
we hand down to cmd_main().

There are certain startup tasks that we expect every git
process to do. In some cases this is just to improve the
quality of the program (e.g., setting up gettext()). In
others it is a requirement for using certain functions in
libgit.a (e.g., system_path() expects that you have called
git_extract_argv0_path()).
Most commands are builtins and are covered by the git.c
version of main(). However, there are still a few external
commands that use their own main(). Each of these has to
remember to include the correct startup sequence, and we are
not always consistent.
Rather than just fix the inconsistencies, let's make this
harder to get wrong by providing a common main() that can
run this standard startup.
We basically have two options to do this:
- the compat/mingw.h file already does something like this by
adding a #define that replaces the definition of main with a
wrapper that calls mingw_startup().
The upside is that the code in each program doesn't need
to be changed at all; it's rewritten on the fly by the
preprocessor.
The downside is that it may make debugging of the startup
sequence a bit more confusing, as the preprocessor is
quietly inserting new code.
- the builtin functions are all of the form cmd_foo(),
and git.c's main() calls them.
This is much more explicit, which may make things more
obvious to somebody reading the code. It's also more
flexible (because of course we have to figure out _which_
cmd_foo() to call).
The downside is that each of the builtins must define
cmd_foo(), instead of just main().
This patch chooses the latter option, preferring the more
explicit approach, even though it is more invasive. We
introduce a new file common-main.c, with the "real" main. It
expects to call cmd_main() from whatever other objects it is
linked against.
We link common-main.o against anything that links against
libgit.a, since we know that such programs will need to do
this setup. Note that common-main.o can't actually go inside
libgit.a, as the linker would not pick up its main()
function automatically (it has no callers).
The rest of the patch is just adjusting all of the various
external programs (mostly in t/helper) to use cmd_main().
I've provided a global declaration for cmd_main(), which
means that all of the programs also need to match its
signature. In particular, many functions need to switch to
"const char **" instead of "char **" for argv. This effect
ripples out to a few other variables and functions, as well.
This makes the patch even more invasive, but the end result
is much better. We should be treating argv strings as const
anyway, and now all programs conform to the same signature
(which also matches the way builtins are defined).

Before commit 986bbc08, git was proactive about asking for
http passwords. It assumed that if you had a username in
your URL, you would also want a password, and asked for it
before making any http requests.
However, this could interfere with the use of .netrc (see
986bbc08 for details). And it was also unnecessary, since
the http fetching code had learned to recognize an HTTP 401
and prompt the user then. Furthermore, the proactive prompt
could interfere with the usage of .netrc (see 986bbc08 for
details).
Unfortunately, the http push-over-DAV code never learned to
recognize HTTP 401, and so was broken by this change. This
patch does a quick fix of re-enabling the "proactive auth"
strategy only for http-push, leaving the dumb http fetch and
smart-http as-is.

Change the skeleton implementation of i18n in Git to one that can show
localized strings to users for our C, Shell and Perl programs using
either GNU libintl or the Solaris gettext implementation.
This new internationalization support is enabled by default. If
gettext isn't available, or if Git is compiled with
NO_GETTEXT=YesPlease, Git falls back on its current behavior of
showing interface messages in English. When using the autoconf script
we'll auto-detect if the gettext libraries are installed and act
appropriately.
This change is somewhat large because as well as adding a C, Shell and
Perl i18n interface we're adding a lot of tests for them, and for
those tests to work we need a skeleton PO file to actually test
translations. A minimal Icelandic translation is included for this
purpose. Icelandic includes multi-byte characters which makes it easy
to test various edge cases, and it's a language I happen to
understand.
The rest of the commit message goes into detail about various
sub-parts of this commit.
= Installation
Gettext .mo files will be installed and looked for in the standard
$(prefix)/share/locale path. GIT_TEXTDOMAINDIR can also be set to
override that, but that's only intended to be used to test Git itself.
= Perl
Perl code that's to be localized should use the new Git::I18n
module. It imports a __ function into the caller's package by default.
Instead of using the high level Locale::TextDomain interface I've
opted to use the low-level (equivalent to the C interface)
Locale::Messages module, which Locale::TextDomain itself uses.
Locale::TextDomain does a lot of redundant work we don't need, and
some of it would potentially introduce bugs. It tries to set the
$TEXTDOMAIN based on package of the caller, and has its own
hardcoded paths where it'll search for messages.
I found it easier just to completely avoid it rather than try to
circumvent its behavior. In any case, this is an issue wholly
internal Git::I18N. Its guts can be changed later if that's deemed
necessary.

= Shell
Shell code that's to be localized should use the git-sh-i18n
library. It's basically just a wrapper for the system's gettext.sh.
If gettext.sh isn't available we'll fall back on gettext(1) if it's
available. The latter is available without the former on Solaris,
which has its own non-GNU gettext implementation. We also need to
emulate eval_gettext() there.
If neither are present we'll use a dumb printf(1) fall-through
wrapper.
= About libcharset.h and langinfo.h
We use libcharset to query the character set of the current locale if
it's available. I.e. we'll use it instead of nl_langinfo if
HAVE_LIBCHARSET_H is set.
The GNU gettext manual recommends using langinfo.h's
nl_langinfo(CODESET) to acquire the current character set, but on
systems that have libcharset.h's locale_charset() using the latter is
either saner, or the only option on those systems.
GNU and Solaris have a nl_langinfo(CODESET), FreeBSD can use either,
but MinGW and some others need to use libcharset.h's locale_charset()
instead.

The http_init function takes a "struct remote". Part of its
initialization procedure is to look at the remote's url and
grab some auth-related parameters. However, using the url
included in the remote is:
- wrong; the remote-curl helper may have a separate,
unrelated URL (e.g., from remote.*.pushurl). Looking at
the remote's configured url is incorrect.
- incomplete; http-fetch doesn't have a remote, so passes
NULL. So http_init never gets to see the URL we are
actually going to use.
- cumbersome; http-push has a similar problem to
http-fetch, but actually builds a fake remote just to
pass in the URL.
Instead, let's just add a separate URL parameter to
http_init, and all three callsites can pass in the
appropriate information.

As the use of http-fetch without -a can create an object store that is
invalid to the point where it cannot even be fsck'd, mark it as
deprecated. A future release should change the default and then
remove the option entirely.

Do away with a second url variable, rewritten_url, and make url
non-const. This is safe because the functions called with url (ie.
get_http_walker() and walker_fetch()) do not modify it (ie. marked with
const char *).
Also, replace code that adds a trailing slash with a call to
str_end_url_with_slash().

Previously, all our http operations were done with http-walker. With the
new remote-curl helper, we find ourselves using http methods outside of
http-walker - for example, fetching info/refs.
Accomodate this by separating http_init() and http_cleanup() invocations
from http-walker.

This splits up git-http-fetch so that it isn't built-in.
It also removes the general dependency on curl, because it is no
longer used by any built-in code. Because they are no longer LIB_OBJS,
add LIB_H to the dependencies of http-related object files, and remove
http.h from the dependencies of transport.o

This turns the extern functions to be provided by the backend into a
struct of pointers, renames the functions to be more
namespace-friendly, and updates http-fetch to this interface. It
removes the unused include from http-push.c. It makes git-http-fetch a
builtin (with the implementation a separate file, accessible
directly).

This eliminates the last function provided by the code using http.h as
a global symbol, so it should be possible to have multiple programs
using http.h in the same executable, and it also adds an argument to
that callback, so that info can be passed into the callback without
being global.

This uses "git-apply --whitespace=strip" to fix whitespace errors that have
crept in to our source files over time. There are a few files that need
to have trailing whitespaces (most notably, test vectors). The results
still passes the test, and build result in Documentation/ area is unchanged.

http-fetch expected the URL given at the command line to have a trailing
slash anyway, and then added '/objects...' when requesting objects files
from the http server.
Now it doesn't require the trailing slash in <url> anymore, and strips
trailing slashes if given nonetheless.

There were instances of strncmp() that were formatted improperly
(e.g. whitespace around parameter before closing parenthesis)
that caused the earlier mechanical conversion step to miss
them. This step cleans them up.

This mechanically converts strncmp() to use prefixcmp(), but only when
the parameters match specific patterns, so that they can be verified
easily. Leftover from this will be fixed in a separate step, including
idiotic conversions like

Back when only handful commands that created commit and tag were
the only users of committer identity information, it made sense
to explicitly call setup_ident() to pre-fill the default value
from the gecos information. But it is much simpler for programs
to make the call automatic when get_ident() is called these days,
since many more programs want to use the information when updating
the reflog.

My sp/mmap changes to pack-check.c modified the function such that
it expects packed_git.pack_size to be populated with the total
bytecount of the packfile by the caller.
But that isn't the case for packs obtained by git-http-fetch as
pack_size was not initialized before being accessed. This caused
verify_pack to think it had 2^32-21 bytes available when the
downloaded pack perhaps was only 305 bytes in length. The use_pack
function then later dies with "offset beyond end of packfile"
when computing the overall file checksum.

We have a number of badly checked write() calls. Often we are
expecting write() to write exactly the size we requested or fail,
this fails to handle interrupts or short writes. Switch to using
the new write_in_full(). Otherwise we at a minimum need to check
for EINTR and EAGAIN, where this is appropriate use xwrite().

We have a number of badly checked read() calls. Often we are
expecting read() to read exactly the size we requested or fail, this
fails to handle interrupts or short reads. Add a read_in_full()
providing those semantics. Otherwise we at a minimum need to check
for EINTR and EAGAIN, where this is appropriate use xread().

And even for an isolated group where everybody knows that
everybody else runs DAV-enabled clients, they need info/refs
prepared for ls-remote and git-fetch script, which means you
will run update-server-info to keep objects/info/packs up to
date.

http-fetch.c: drop remote_ls()
While doing remote_ls() over DAV potentially allows the server
side not to keep objects/info/pack up-to-date, misconfigured or
buggy servers can silently ignore or not to respond to DAV
requests and makes the client hang.
The server side (unfortunately) needs to run git-update-server-info
even if remote_ls() removes the need to keep objects/info/pack file
up-to-date, because the caller of git-http-fetch (git-fetch) and other
clients that interact with the repository (e.g. git-ls-remote) need to
read from info/refs file (there is no code to make that unnecessary by
using DAV yet).
Perhaps the right solution in the longer-term is to make info/refs
also unnecessary by using DAV, and we would want to resurrect the
code this patch removes when we do so, but let's drop remote_ls()
implementation for now. It is causing problems without really
helping anything yet.
git will keep it for us until we need it next time.

At a handful places we check two error codes from curl library
to see if the file we asked was missing from the remote (e.g.
we asked for a loose object when it is in a pack) to decide what
to do next. This consolidates the check into a single function.
NOTE: the original did not check for HTTP_RETURNED_ERROR when
error code is 404, but this version does to make sure 404 is
from HTTP and not some other protcol.

Fetch over http from a repository that uses alternates to borrow
from neighbouring repositories were quite broken, apparently for
some time now.
We parse input and count bytes to allocate the new buffer, and
when we copy into that buffer we know exactly how many bytes we
want to copy from where. Using strlcpy for it was simply
stupid, and the code forgot to take it into account that strlcpy
terminated the string with NUL.

Like xmalloc and xrealloc xstrdup dies with a useful message if
the native strdup() implementation returns NULL rather than a
valid pointer.
I just tried to use xstrdup in new code and found it to be missing.
However I expected it to be present as xmalloc and xrealloc are
already commonly used throughout the code.

This abstracts away the size of the hash values when copying them
from memory location to memory location, much as the introduction
of hashcmp abstracted away hash value comparsion.
A few call sites were using char* rather than unsigned char* so
I added the cast rather than open hashcpy to be void*. This is a
reasonable tradeoff as most call sites already use unsigned char*
and the existing hashcmp is also declared to be unsigned char*.
[jc: Splitted the patch to "master" part, to be followed by a
patch for merge-recursive.c which is not in "master" yet.
Fixed the cast in the latter hunk to combine-diff.c which was
wrong in the original.
Also converted ones left-over in combine-diff.c, diff-lib.c and
upload-pack.c ]

Uses memcmp for comparison and returns the result based on the length of
the hash name (a future runtime decision).

As Fredrik points out the current interface of has_extension() is
potentially confusing. Its parameters include both a nul-terminated
string and a length-limited string.
This patch drops the length argument, requiring two nul-terminated
strings; all callsites are updated. I checked that all of them indeed
provide nul-terminated strings. Filenames need to be nul-terminated
anyway if they are to be passed to open() etc. The performance penalty
of the additional strlen() is negligible compared to the system calls
which inevitably surround has_extension() calls.
Additionally, change has_extension() to use size_t inside instead of
int, as that is the exact type strlen() returns and memcmp() expects.

Currently it's a bit weird that pull() takes a single argument
describing the commit but takes the write_ref from a global variable.
This makes it take that as a parameter as well, which might be nicer
for the libification in the future, but especially it will make for
nicer code when we implement pull()ing multiple commits at once.

This doesn't make the code uglier or harder to read, yet it makes the
code more portable. This also simplifies checking for other potential
incompatibilities. "gcc -std=c89 -pedantic" can flag many incompatible
constructs as warnings, but C99 comments will cause it to emit an error.

This cleans up the use of safe_strncpy() even more. Since it has the
same semantics as strlcpy() use this name instead. Also move the
definition from inside path.c to its own file compat/strlcpy.c, and use
it conditionally at compile time, since some platforms already has
strlcpy(). It's included in the same way as compat/setenv.c.

Though very nice and readable, the "case 'a'...'z':" construct is not ANSI C99
compliant. This patch unfolds the range in `quote.c' and substitutes the
switch-statement with an if-statement in `http-fetch.c' and `http-push.c'.

If a ref is changed by http-fetch, local-fetch or ssh-fetch
record the change and the remote URL/name in the log for the ref.
This requires loading the config file to check logAllRefUpdates.
Also fixed a bug in the ref lock generation; the log file name was
not being produced right due to a bad prefix length.

When a repository otherwise properly prepared is served by a
dumb HTTP server that sends "No such page" output with 200
status for human consumption to a request for a page that does
not exist, the users will get an alarming "File X corrupt" error
message. Hint that they might be dealing with such a server at
the end and suggest running fsck-objects to check if the result
is OK (the pack-fallback code does the right thing in this case
so unless a loose object file was actually corrupt the result
should check OK).

When fetching alternates, http-fetch may reuse the slot to fetch non-http
alternates if http-alternates does not exist. When doing so, it now needs
to update the slot's finished status so run_active_slot waits for the
non-http alternates request to finish.

In fetch_object, there's a call to release an object request if the
object mysteriously arrived, say in a pack. Unfortunately, the fetch
attempt for this object might already be in progress, and we'll leak the
descriptor. Instead, try to tidy away the request.

In fill_active_slots() -- if we find an object which has already arrived,
say as part of a pack, /don't/ remove it from the list. It's already been
prefetched and someone will ask for it later. Just label it as done and
carry blithely on. (As it was, the code would dereference a freed object
to continue through the list anyway.)

These are whole-tree operations and there is not much point
making them operable from within a subdirectory, but it is easy

Move shared HTTP request functionality out of http-fetch and http-push,
and replace the two fwrite_buffer/fwrite_buffer_dynamic functions with
one fwrite_buffer function that does dynamic buffering. Use slot
callbacks to process responses to fetch object transfer requests and
push transfer requests, and put all of http-push into an #ifdef check
for curl multi support.

The current http-fetch is rather careless about fd leakage, causing
problems while fetching large repositories. This patch does not reserve
exhaustiveness, but I covered everything I spotted. I also left some
safeguards in place in case I missed something, so that we get to know,
sooner or later.

After using cg-update to pull, empty files named *.temp are left in
the various subdirectories of .git/objects/. These are created by
git-http-fetch to hold data as it's being fetched from the remote
repository. They are left behind after a transfer error so that the
next time git-http-fetch runs it can pick up where it left off. If
they're empty though, it would make more sense to delete them rather
than leaving them behind for the next attempt.

git-http-fetch spits out curl 404 error message when unable to fetch an object,
but that's confusing since no error really happened and the object is usually
found in a pack it tries right after that. And if the object still cannot be
retrieved, it will say another error message anyway. OTOH other HTTP errors
(403 etc) are likely fatal and the user should be still informed about them.

This patch cleans out all sparse warnings from http-fetch.c
I'm a bit uncomfortable with adding extra #ifdefs to avoid either
'mixing declaration with code' or 'unused variable' warnings, but I
figured that since those functions are already littered with #ifdefs I
might just get away with it. Comments?

git-http-fetch received objects/info/packs into a fixed-size buffer
and started to fail when this file became larger than the buffer.
Change it to grow the buffer dynamically, and do the same thing for
objects/info/alternates. Also add missing free() calls for these
buffers.

curl_escape ought to do this, but we should not let it quote
slashes (nobody said refs/tags cannot have subdirectories), so
we roll our own safer version. With this, the last part of
git-clone from Martin's moodle repository that used to fail now
works, which reads:

The http commit walker cannot use the same temporary file
creation code because it needs to use predictable temporary
filename for partial fetch continuation purposes, but the code
to move the temporary file to the final location should be
usable from the ordinary object creation codepath.
Export move_temp_to_file from sha1_file.c and use it, while
losing the custom relink_or_rename function from http-fetch.c.
Also the temporary object file creation part needs to make sure
the leading path exists, in preparation of the really lazy
fan-out directory creation.

The parallel request changes didn't properly implement the previous patch to
allow caching of retrieved objects by proxy servers. Restore the previous
functionality such that by default requests include the "Pragma: no-cache"
header, and this header is removed on requests for pack indexes, packs, and
objects.

Be sure not to fetch objects that already exist in the local repository.
The main process loop no longer performs this check, http-fetch now checks
prior to starting a new request queue entry and when fetch_object() is called,
and local-fetch now checks when fetch_object() is called.

Add support for parallel HTTP transfers. Prefetch populates a queue of
objects to transfer and starts feeding requests to an active request
queue for processing; fetch_object keeps the active queue moving
while the specified object is being transferred. The size of the active
queue can be restricted using -r and defaults to 5 concurrent transfers.
Requests for objects that are not prefetched are also processed via the
active queue.

Add the sanity checks discussed on the list with Nick Hengeveld in

* unlink of previous and rename from temp to previous can fail for
reasons other than benign ones (missing previous and missing temp).
Report these failures when we encounter them, to make diagnosing
problems easier.

Unlike write_sha1_file() that tries to create the object file in a
temporary location and then move it to the final location, fetch_object
could have been interrupted in the middle, leaving a corrupt file.

This allows the remote repository to refer to additional repositories
in a file objects/info/http-alternates or
objects/info/alternates. Each line may be:
a relative path, starting with ../, to get from the objects directory
of the starting repository to the objects directory of the added
repository.
an absolute path of the objects directory of the added repository (on
the same server).
(only in http-alternates) a full URL of the objects directory of the
added repository.

This tries .../objects/info/http-alternates and then
.../objects/info/alternates, looking for a file which specifies where
else to download objects and packs from.
It currently only supports absolute paths, and doesn't support full URLs.

By default the curl library adds "Pragma: no-cache" header to all
requests, which disables caching by proxy servers. However, most
files in a GIT repository are immutable, and caching them is safe and
could be useful.
This patch removes the "Pragma: no-cache" header from requests for all
files except the pack list (objects/info/packs) and references
(refs/*), which are really mutable and should not be cached.

while and now it's time to remove them. Gone are:

As promised, this is the "big tool rename" patch. The primary differences
since 0.99.6 are:
(1) git-*-script are no more. The commands installed do not
have any such suffix so users do not have to remember if
something is implemented as a shell script or not.
(2) Many command names with 'cache' in them are renamed with
'index' if that is what they mean.
There are backward compatibility symblic links so that you and
Porcelains can keep using the old names, but the backward
compatibility support is expected to be removed in the near
future.
